capriseyhaze, can you post a picture of your iPad showing a black background with >50% brightness? I think a lot of us that have iPads with issues would like to see what an iPad without issues looks like...

Well my iPad just came in the mail a couple of hours ago. And to my surprise I have no back light bleeding. It is a 16gb wifi model blk. it seems to be perfect. I was expecting a monstrosity to show up at my door but I was pleasantly surprised. :)

Please, post a picture!
A couple of days ago, some people I know got iPad 2's imported from the US and both of them claim they have zero backlight bleeding.
I hope not all iPad's out there have the bleeding issue.

UPDATE

Went to the local "genius" bar and discussed my heinous backlight bleeding with the staff. They said that Apple is now telling them to not return/replace these units as it "should go away in the first 10 days". He told me that if it does not, then I can return/exchange it at that time regardless if it's still within the 14 day return period. He made some notations in my account about the visit and I was on my way.

Honestly, I'm 99.9% sure that the idea of it going away in 10 days or 10 years is a crock of sheet.

I also asked him if I decided to live with it for 6 months and then come in with a warranty claim at that time citing the backlight bleeding as the problem, could it be exchanged as a warranty claim? He told me absolutely.

I just received mine an hour or so ago via Fedex (32GB Black WIfi) Netflix 100% brightness I can't see bleeding on edges. If I cover camera, on the right side of the screen there is the tiniest bit and I mean like really tiny, but hardly noticeable unless you tilt it at just the right angle. Overall Black as night baby. Not a high-res picture but I think you can tell there is no significant bleeding. This was taken in 100% dark room and is what I see when I look at it. I'm 100% satisfied. My order was placed within the first 15 minutes of online ordering if anyone is wondering and it is engraved.

^ so let me get this right...you buy it, you have bleeding and they tell you wait 10 days, so you have a 4 day window to exchange....

I would assume since the iPad2 is so new that they give you a brand new one (within the 14 days), but if you were to wait long enough (6 months or whatever) you will get a brown box version (aka a refurb) right???? (I mean we all know how crapola those brown box items are)

Good deal. That should be the norm.

I just received my 32gb black wifi today and I do have some slight bleeding but nothing like some of the photos I seen is this thread. To be honest i didn't even notice it until I read this thread.

There could be something to what Stangs55 is saying.

I have a 64 gig WiFi I picked up on launch day. I saw the yellowing post on MacRumors that night and decided to check mine.

Sure enough it was there, primarily to the right of the home button and in that corner. I could also see it along the other edges somewhat.

So I've been keeping an eye on these threads, waiting to see if Apple made some type of statement on the issue. I wasn't going to drive over an hour to the Apple store to get another, possibly worse, unit.

It's now to the point where I can barely see it at 100% brightness when I'm at work with overhead florescent lighting.

Sitting here at home with natural ambient lighting, I can see maybe a half a thumbprint of yellowing to the right of the home button and barely anything at all along the borders with 100% brightness.

My iPad wasn't nearly as bad as most posted on this thread. I don't have before and after pics unfortunately. I will say I tried to take a snapshot with my iPhone but there was too much glare and the camera makes it look 10x worse than what it is.

If only it didn't have that yellow tint to it I don't think it would be as noticeable as it is.

If the leak to the right of my home button goes away I'd be perfectly happy with this unit. It has lessened compared to the first time I powered up. I have another week and I'm going to keep an eye on it. Unless I hear about a rash of light leak free units getting into the hands of customers I think I'm just gonna keep this unit.

I think I'm going to keep my third iPad for the 14 days and if it doesn't get better, I'll return it. Then I'll wait until they have more iPads and go to the store and keep opening the new boxes until I see one that I like (that's what the store manager offered to me anyway).

Replacement iPad on the way.

I had some light bleeding from the edge of the screen by the home button. I have a 64GB 3G GSM iPad 2. It's really only noticable when viewing a near black image, but since the screen of my iPad 1 was perfect, it started bothering me more and more.

The genius who looked at my iPad at the Apple store said this was the first iPad 2 he has seen come back. Thats kind-of hard to believe tho. And of course, in the store with the bright lights, the bleeding was even less noticeable, but he took it into the back to look at it in the dark. When he returned, he said they'd replace it.

Unfortunately none where in stock, and there was no secret stash for warrant replacements, so one is being ordered for me. Im not going to be able to get one from the next shipment. Mine will be shipped to the store specifically for me. I was also reassured it will be new. Referbs, he said won't be available for quite a while.

So this was my experience. I sure hope the new ones isn't worse. Fortunately there was no mention of a waiting period to see if it gets better on it's own.

Here's a pic I took with my iPhone 4.

Have you guys watched the ipad 2 breakdown videos? I would be curious to know if someone has tried this: If you remove the front glass from the LCD screen, would the backlight bleed go away if it relieves the downward pressures along the LCD's edge? I ask this because people write that the bleeding becomes worse when they push down along the screen's border.

This theory is not completely unfounded, it could be caused by the glued edges of the iPad 2, but simple manufacturing tolerances also create this effect. The layer that spreads edge-lit backlighting across the entire screen can end up not completely flat during the manufacturing process. This is pretty common because there is no way for them to test for imperfections until the entire LCD is produced (otherwise LCDs would cost 20x more than they do). The end result is you get a lot of LCDs with light bleed, and the only option is to either decrease your yield by throwing them out, or accept a certain amount of bleed and ship them out to customers (note, the customer in this case is Apple, not the end-user, so blaming Apple is not entirely fair since they don't actually make the panels).

I can see the bleed in your image, on the bottom and left. Here's an overexposed image to see it more clearly. But again, I can see it on your normal image.

EVERY iPad has bleed.

I "sort of" agree, BUT...... I mean I saw this post and looked at mine during my normal everyday use and thought "Huh mine is fine." Then POW!, during a reboot when the screen is black and back-lit I noticed it in a few spots on the edges. Now when I'm watching a movie or video in letterbox with the black bars on top and bottom I can't help but notice it. So I think we should be taking extra measures to see if the problem exists.

If Apple knew of the iPhone 4 antenna issue they know about this. Are they hoping most people just don't care / notice??

I don't disagree that if you can see bleeding in normal use then it's clearly a problem. What I was saying is that if you have to take extreme measures to see an issue, then is it really an issue or not? A perfect example is the post above this one that takes extreme measures to try and prove bleeding in what looks like a perfect black picture to me

Thread is really going in circles on this issue, when it's really cut and dry.

1. It seems all iPads have some light bleed.

2. Some have bad bleed visible in normal use and should 100% be exchanged.

3. Others have minor bleed only noticeable when on a black screen in a dark room. These shouldn't be exchanged right now as you're not likely to get one that's better and may get one that's worse. So your choice is to return it if you can't live with it and wait and see if they address the problem. Or just live with it since you can't see it in normal use anyway.

That's the situation and options.

Told you so

Well earlier in this thread I pointed out that I had issues with the iPad1 and wrote a letter to Apple, this thread is growing big, and I want to show you what I wrote to Apple 11. january 2011. And that my letter obviously only reached the trashcan ;o)

Hi Apple

I bought myself an iPad for Christmas, and it is a wonderful product, but I have had more than what you would call bad luck.

I have now just returned my fifth iPad, and to make a long story short, I will describe the problem of them all.

1st. iPad had serious backlight bleed issues, and was hideous on black background, all the following iPads I got did not suffer this issue.

2nd. iPad had a big scratch in lower right corner.

3rd. iPad had a bright pixel in center of screen, and a vertical line on top, where it flashed.

4th. iPad had dead pixels

5th. iPad had, what looked like a thumbprint underneath the screen, but it could also have been some metal smudge.

To be unlucky with a product once can happen, and then once again more rarely can also happen.
But when I get a product, that's not in the cheap end of the pricelist, and are able to get 5 bad iPads, then it must be more than bad luck, and may be caused by poor quality control.

I have no expectation on you doing anything in my particular case. But Apple have a reputation of delivering products that just work, and where quality is at the highest. This is not what I experienced, and to many iPads are leaving the assembly line in to bad quality, and many more may be returning their iPads in the future.

This is just a mail from an insignificant danish person, but history shows that if companies had listened to what the “little guy” said, the story might have taken another turn.

2011 is said to be the year of tablet PC, and to many problems on the iPad may give the competitors a boost in sale.

You could easily choose to archive this mail in the trash, and if I knew my company had everything in order, I just might do that. But what if “the little guy” was right and a problem you did not know existed was to blame ?

Kind Regards
A previous owner of an iPad
