Hi all,

I HAVE the base Aluminium MacBook in the UK and it does NOT have keypad backlight. This was also confirmed on the UK website.

Unless it changes from country to country, the base model is not backlit.

Thank you. That should end that idiotic debate...

What "idiotic debate?" Apple made a mistake on their web site, which lead to inevitable confusion. They've cleared it up now, but it took most of a day to do so.

The idiotic debate of people still claiming that it WILL have a backlit keyboard, despite no substantial evidence to support that.

Here's your substantial evidence. and it involves money.

fixed

they have fixed the mistake. If you ordered and it says backlit keyboard on your receipt and when it arrives and does not have it. Call and complain you might get something free because of the mistake.

How does it involve money? You didnt pay for something and not receive it. It was a typo on the page, this is what the disclaimers and terms that YOU accept when purchasing products online are for.

I don't hear anyone "still claiming" this. Apple finally cleared up the discrepancy, but for something like 12 hours it was certainly confusing and a legitimate matter for discussion.

Interesting how quickly something goes from not even available at all to a dealbreaker without it.

So I was noticing. It's amusing, but we do hear stuff like this every time Apple releases a new product, so it's hardly unexpected.

Yeah, the store was wrong before, but its been fixed now, I just checked. $1299 does not have backlit keyboard on regular/specs or in store. I ordered the $1599 one, in part to get that illuminated keyboard. ...

Maybe it is, but if its on the receipt, Apple will have to deliver it (or give you a full refund afterwards if they can't and you so desire.)

Order now, before they correct themselves!

That's preposterous.

Apple is not responsible for typographical errors. Apple reserves the right to cancel any order you have placed if there was a typographical error on the Apple Store concerning the pricing or availability of any item you ordered when you placed the order.

They cannot be held liable for mistakes.

okay, i dont think i have ever been mean on a forum but some of you people are pissing me off. those of you saying no, it definitely is a mistake there is no backlit on the entry-level. YES THERE IS. It has been confirmed, the site is not messed up. yesterday there was cofusion between the reps but if you talked to them anytime past 9 last night you would know that it does indeed have it. say what you know. and yes, i have spoken with them, multiple reps actually.
besides, if that is a deal breaker for you then your crazy, imo.

Oh, really?

But, but, but--they said they did! It's on my receipt!!!!

I accept the apologies of everyone who jumped down my throat for being right.

Ordered 2.0 GHZ macbook and got upgraded to 2.4ghz

Hello all, i ordered my macbook 2.0 while it said backlit keyboard on tuesday at about 3pm eastern time. i saved the confirmation page that indeed says backlit keybaord. BUT i checked the order status today and the order does not say Backlit. SO i called apple customer service and inquired. they said it was a mistake and i was put on hold, then i was told i would get a call back.
Waited 10 minutes an got a call

the rep offered to give me an upgrade to the 2.4ghz macbook for $50, so i took that deal an ran with it.

Original order was canceled and now i have the 2.4 model on order with my education discount , then $50 more than the cost of the 2.0ghz macbook.

I had the 2.0 macbook upgraded to the 250gb hard drive, so after the education discount (i do go to OSU) and the hard drive upgrade, plus the $50 upgrade i paid $1,389 for the 2.4 ghz macbook,
( before taxes)

all in all i feel satisifed paying $50 to upgrade to the 2.4ghz macbook even tho the backlit wasnt a dealbreaker... i still that it was good cust/service to offer the discounted upgrade to the 2.4ghz. :D

Estimated arrival: Oct 20-22, i cant wait!!!

I'll be calling Apple... maybe they can do the same for me. It may not be worth $300 more, but $50? Sure.

UPDATE: I found out that this is actually true!

I called Apple customer service and after only a brief 5-minute conversation explaining my issue to the customer service rep, I was upgraded from the 2.0 GHz/250 GB model I ordered for $1339.00 to the 2.4 GHz/250 GB model (with backlit keyboard) for just $10 more. They knocked $150 off of the price (not including the discount I already got for using my student discount). GREAT deal. I love Apple customer service, I must say.

thats awesome, im starting to think that if i wouldve complained that they might have done it for free...... i wont be too greedy tho lol i just want it to be delivered!!

Yeah, same here, and I also had to go through one heck of a debacle with my credit card company in order to free up the funds to place the order again, but it finally worked! $1349 is a great price for that model.

I tried to do the same. At first they offered me a free case for the notebook, then a $50 store credit, finally they gave me a $150 credit back to my CC - they would not give me a $150 store credit so I could upgrade to the 2.4. Weird, but I'll take it.

That's so weird. You would think that they'd have a consistent policy on this kind of thing, especially when you know they HAVE to have gotten several hundred calls like this today (if not way more).
