Fallout and C&C, those would be a couple of games that I would love to have on the Ipad.

GemRB has been running BG/IWD/PST on ipad/iphone for a year now. >.>

I wonder whats going to happen to them when this is released...

Probably nothing, it's not illegal to write your own engine as long as you don't reverse engineer existing code or copy existing algorithms.

GemRB doesn't distribute copyrighted content (i.e. the game assets) so it should be fine.

This will definitely be an Insta-buy.

The model worked fantastically with The Bard's Tale. If you like this type of game, go buy that immediately. It's universal for iPad and iPhone (much better looking on iPad though), and they also implemented iCloud so you can play between the two.

The only native iOS game that's decent in this genre is Aralon: Sword and Scorcery, and that's a big of a buggy hot mess. Still worth buying as well, though.

whoa...never knew Bard's Tale was on iOS. That used to be my Apple IIc's best friend :)

I was only just talking about this game on my podcast, this is going to make for great follow up discussion next month!

Wirelessly posted

Pretty cool, but I'd rather see a Mac version. Hope they're considering it.

Well BG is already out for the Mac, it just isn't the enhanced version.

Yeah, I loved Baldur's Gate back in the day...

There's just something odd replaying the same old, long game again. Yes, there will be a couple more quests, but c'mon, you know what you'll be doing mid-game before you even start. You will recall around 1/3 of the locations immediately, you will have to go through that tedious tutorial in the beginning again where you learn all of your battle skills, you will remember what stories the NPC's say (and you'll most likely just fast forward through most of the text anyway), you know the same old antics your party member will say, and what loot you'll be getting from a particularly tough foe.

Its been 9 years since I last played, I want to relive the experience again but do it with a more chaotic character compared to my lawful good one.

There's nothing wrong in redoing old legendary games... I'd just sort of wish they took the old engine and just continue where "Throne of Bhaal" left off story-wise. Do a new game with the old engine and old characters. Why not start there right away instead of putting as back to the beginning of time? Why do you spend resources on redoing an old game? I only have a limited time left on Earth (I am 30), so I'd like to play as many original games as possible, not replay the exact same Baldur's Gate, Monkey Island or XCOM...

Give me UFO enemy Unknown. I have heard they are making their way to BG3 so don't worry dude.

Just my 2 cents.

Why do you guys like playing games you have already spent dozens or hundreds of hours on? Why not play new fresh games with a story-line that you don't already know before the game even started? Puzzles me...

When something better comes out, I'll play it, but nothing since BG2 (apart from IWD) has come out and done anything better. Plus I've never played through the entirety of the games we're discussing.

But you could always find me a game that's newer and doesn't suck (ergo better than BG2). Avadon before you cite that as your example isn't it, but it's trying.

Can I also ask why you assume 'us guys' haven't played anything new? You hear about ONE amazing game that's soon to be released and you jump to the conclusion you have done.

Emm.. BG was great, but c'mon.. you expect me to play the same game again? Yes there might be some new quests, but it's still BG :p

How about a completely new storyline?

Patience dude, it's cheaper to port this, test the market before jumping in with a big game, plus we, the fans will be talking about this to other people getting them interested through word of mouth. Why jump onto the iPad with an untested game? Also, this BG has additional content and a new character, at this they are trying not to give us the exact same experience as before.

Also I would love original Fallout and Fallout 2 as iPad games. With retina graphics hmmm..... they can sell millions.

Oh, my God, yes. This is so ripe with so many people who only just got into the franchise with Fallout 3 and New Vegas. They need to have the opportunity to play the originals.

I hope we start seeing more Retina-ized ports of old classic games for the iPad.

nice. love those old games. how bout ceasar or good ol' sim city 2000 for ipad?

Come on, i thought i don't need the new iPad.
But now....i think i need it for this awesome Game!!

Hot damn! I hope more PC big games are coming. Now we're reaping the fruits of Apple's decision to include a good GPU.
Baldur's gate 1 is sprite based. It does not and cannot use GPU power.

Baldur's gate 2 does support GPU acceleration, but this is only for effects and spells. The overall requirement is still small however, and should be well beyond the iPad 1.

I always was somewhat surprised that no attempts at porting BG was made sooner. It is one of the few large PC games where the absence of a keyboard would cause no issues - and precision input is not used. The early Heroes of Might and Magic games too have non-existant resource requirements, are almost exclusively navigated via the mouse, with said input being perfectly mimicable by touch. And being turn based means theres no stress involved in decision making, and pausing/quitting can be done at any time.

I remember when Baldur's Gate was released for the PC on six CDs. No DVDs back then. The six-disc magazine CD player was essential for avoiding the long loading pauses after switching out a disc.

Indeed.

Nowadays, lets just say thank god for GOG.

While they are at it, can they do "enhanced editions" for Baldur's Gate II, Icewind Dale and Icewind Dale II? Any Bioware/Black Isle Studio game please.

+1 to this! Once they are done with the engine tweaks, every single RPG on it should be reproduced. Planescape: Torment would be excellent as well. I spent literally hundreds and hundreds, if not over a thousand hours playing these games through multiple times with different character and playing as different sexes and alignments when I was in high school and college.

Truly epic games that no RPG's since have really come close to at all in terms of storyline and mechanics. If they reproduce all of them, it is going to be a whole new rebirth of the RPG on the iPad, not to mention a horde of cash for Blizzard/Bioware, and create a real differentiation between "mobile" gaming like the stuff we have seen for the most part so far, including games like the Infinity Blade series, that have very little substance, and what can be done on the iPad.

Best news for gamers in a long time, this!

I LOVED XCOM...... memories

Oh yeah...nothing was more terrible than having a damn Chryssalid turn the corner of hallway with half your squad bunched right up on it...

(Checks his ammo clips and TUs)

Ohhhhh shi...(sounds of alien scream and wailing Human Soldiers)

Baldur's Gate was great in its day and all, but MAN, WTF is the new content to rival it? I'm STILL waiting for Diablo III even and frankly, Diablo 2 wasn't that long a game (I beat all three difficulties with the expansion using a Necromancer, which was supposed to be harder than other characters inside two weeks while on vacation, playing maybe 6 hours a day on average). I spent far more time playing Dragon Age Origins (let alone replaying it to see all the different endings with different characters, etc.) but sadly it's sequels have sucked. Maybe less graphics and more gameplay would be a good idea. But just rehashing the same game I already played and beat years ago doesn't really interest me. I think I'd rather play IcewindDale and its sequel again (since you can build your entire party any way you like, not have to add pre-made NPC character that you just control 'most' of the time).

Not for OS X, at least not without some hackery, and I don't even know if that still works in Lion.

It works on OSX, through Rosetta (so not older OSX). I have the Mac version. However, since I upgraded to 10.6, I un the Windows version via CrossOver games.

Also, I run BGI using BGTutu so it plays in the BGII engine.

My favorite games of all time. I have replayed many times. I have taken multiple characters through the whole saga and added mods to freshen gameplay. They just don't make games like it anymore. Rich story. Plus, I love the iso look.

The popular 1998 role-playing game Baldur's Gate is seeing a PC remake called Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition by Overhaul Games.

The company has since announced that the new version will also be available for iPad and be available in the summer of 2012.

IGN has already had some hands on time with an early build.IGN reports that the new version of thegame will feature new content, more quests and a new party member. The early build of the iPad version runs smoothly though the interface has not yet been revamped to be more touch friendly. Those changes are still in the works, though pinch and zoom has already been implemented. The iPad version is expected to launch this summer.

This is indeed awesome but I would love for Warcraft 1, 2, and 3 to be on there as well!

Nope! I still have my copy of Baldur's Gate DVD. I think it came out a few months after the CD release.

Also, this is awesome, awesome, awesome news. I'll buy this the very first minute it hits the app store.
