WTF!!!!!!!!! do they HAVE to copy EVERYTHING apple does? Come on!

Relax. It's the software. A Win 7 Tablet will never be as smooth at an iPad.
Even Android 2.2 IMO is clunky compared to iOS4.

People will pay a premium for the user experience. Even when it takes Rev.B to get the bugs out.

Microsoft really is not the player these days anyway. Wait for the Android Tablet if you want to see "copy". It will still be clunky. ;)

lol @ the apple fans :p, I'm looking forward to see what PC tablets have to offer.. It would be neat to run a real OS. I'm already wondering if you could install Snow Leopard on those little things..

Although the iPad is great, it's not like it will replace your desktop or laptop. I think this iSlate thing might be closer to a laptop/desktop then the iPad is..

...running a flavor of the company's Windows 7 operating system rather than Windows Phone 7.

There better be a Vista version or I won't consider it.

But seriously, thank you Microsoft. I'll wait to see what you offer before lampooning it, but this needs to blows Jesus out of the water if you want to save your image.

The picture of Steve Ballmer and the HP Slate was taken at CES, and that was before the iPad was even announced. It looks more like Apple copied the design of the HP Slate FYI.

I'm sure Apple saw the concept at CES and then crapped out the iPad overnight, scrapping their previous design that resembles a lunchbox with an LCD screen attached.

You cannot deny now that Microsoft is indeed copying the concept. I mean look at the iPad compared to this!

Copying the concept of the iPad? I hope you understand that the image of Ballmer holding that tablet is from CES back in January, a couple weeks before Apple even announced the iPad.

So they had a head start and STILL can't deliver?

Ballmer for President!

Maybe they will make it with an antiglare screen to counter act Mr. Balmer's chrome dome.

You still don't get it, its iOS that makes the iPad what it is. They had full desktop tables for years. They didn't sell well.

Yay for competition! Without this closed iOS system, they might make something pretty cool. I hope they don't come out with something to cool though. I have grown attached to my iPad and I'd hate to give it up for something better :)

I hope they come out with something really competitive. Im getting tired of Apple forging these new paths with no real competition. They need to drive eachother.

No worries.

Ballmer said, "they've sold certainly more than I'd like them to have sold."

Will Ballmer be such a salesman forever? If he has ever paid certain attention to how MS can satisfy costumers, he would have sold as well as he expected.

Here's what I find amusing.

1) Its going to run Win 7. Sounds good, right? Wrong. Win7 has zero touch features, nor is it designed for touch (well, there is the touch-desktop, but I digress). Basically, Win 7 wasn't designed FOR touch, its going to be an afterthought. I imagine the start menu and the tool-bars to be real nightmares to navigate, especially for people with bigger fingers.

2) Did I mention it's going to run Win7? The minimum system requirements for Win7 is a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM, 16GB of HD space, and a DX9 graphics card. That's the minimum too, which means its going to run incredibly slow. Or, they'll opt for the second option, which is an entirely gimped Win7, thus not really being Win7 at all, even though theyll market it as such.

3) Intel Atom processor. Lol. While at a higher clockspeed, the cost is pretty hefty and the battery life is nill. Because this is microsoft, I imagine theyll try some publicity stunt and use pineview (Q3 2010), which is 1.5 GHz, 200 Mhz GPU, and .8-1.175 V w/ 8.5 W TDP. It's also dual core. Any of the silverthornes could also work; 1.6GHz-2.133GHz, around .75-1.1V, and 2.4W TDP, single core, no GPU. Given the fact that the Z540 cost $160, I'd expect a ~$100-120 price point, assuming they got the manufacturing technique down.

ARM is clearly better in this case, and Microsoft is a fool to consider otherwise.

Which Redmond genius figured Ballmer's fat belly would be a good backdrop for Microsoft's prototype "Job One Urgency" project....?

I really want to reserve judgement and give them the benefit of the doubt until a final product is released, but I have to imagine: if they can't even present it, what makes me think they can design it?

Also, does it have a start button? -->fail

It will be successful as long as there are

Developers, Developers, Developers, Developers...

;)

Last time I bought a "Tablet" it was slow, didn't recognize my handwriting or typing (had to use a real keyboard), wouldn't load my programs, and the battery lasted hardly an hour.

Sold it a month later at an $800 loss...

Sure, I'll get one of these...

Steve Ballmer, 6/3/2010:

"The ad from our competition in 3 years won’t be Mac vs. PC, it will be whatever this new device is versus the PC. It’s obvious that they’re moving in that direction, the Mac will keep its 3% market share… and the race is on."

As The Dread Pirate Roberts said, "Truly, you have a dizzying intellect."
