Well .. NatWest was about to work, the app crashed after I accepted the terms and conditions and then when I relaunched to try again; I now get stuck here

I've never got past that mark with Natwest. Just get Card Not Added. Contact your card issuer for more information.

A merchant can't match an Apple Pay payment to your bank card. They don't receive your bank card details when you pay by Apple Pay, but rather the Device Account Number which is generated when you set up the card in Apple Pay.

What they, apparantely, will be able to do is scan your phone with their handheld device in the same way that they scan a contactless bank card. This will be just as effective as a contactless card in verifying that you've paid.

This does mean that you need to be careful not to mix Apple Pay and contactless card payments, or you could end up paying more. The automatic daily and weekly fare capping, for example, relies on you using the same payment method for all your journeys.

And if you were to "touch in" with Apple Pay and then "touch out" with a bank card, you'd end up paying 2 fares (and they would both be expensive "incomplete journey" fares).

So when they scan your phone are they getting this "device acct no" or your bank card number?

And that applies to different devices, too. Apple says that each iOS device gets its own Device Account Number for the same card account.

If so, then if you tapped in with your iPhone, and tapped out with your Watch, TfL wouldn't recognize that it's the same account, since the DANs would be different, and you'd get charged the maximum.

(If this works as Apple says, then it'd be handy if TfL was able to tie multiple DANs to the same account. Or are they able to let you use two different cards even now? My impression is that it must be the same card used for a single tap-in/tap-out sequence.)

Have to confess that I'm excited.

Given that Apple issued a press release on Thu 16 October confirming the U.S. launch date as Mon 20 October, do you think that we can expect an announcement on Friday if the launch date is indeed Tuesday next week?

Agreed, looks like i will need to close me Barclay account down, as a premier customer, i sure do not feel that they have the customer's best interest at heart.

Never eat at Mac D's, might have to make an exception now.

Seriously, I mean seriously! You would leave your bank simply because you cannot touch your phone to a card reader? I wasn't aware that children had iPhones and bank accounts.

I am quite happy with the NFC chips in my plastic, oh and my Android phone.

Why wouldn't you? They have greater access to funds than any Apple pay.

It seems these days you're more likely to forget your wallet than your phone. Having a payment source available on it would be good emergency cover for those who want to keep using plastic.

The other day I went to pick someone up, a quick five minute job, so just jumped in the car with nothing but my phone. Except things got delayed, and I ended up siting in a hot car for half an hour, enviously looking at the McD's across the road, where I could have bought a drink if only I had Apple Pay on my phone!

because my lifestyle is such that I don't have to. Yet always have my iPhone.

and I can draw money from a hole in the wall/cash point with my banking app. Its called get cash. It gives a code to input and out comes the amount. I can also send this code to someone else and they can use it. Welcome to 2015

I'm old school and never leave the house with less than £50 cash. Something I was told when growing up, i.e. always wear clean underwear and have a few bob in your pocket. :)

Both the hole in the wall and the banking apps have daily limits. My card gives me instant access to thousands of pounds worth of goods. Android Pay will be here next year but I doubt I will bother using it.

the clean underwear never made sense. Is your underwear clean? It better be. If you get in an accident and they take you to hospital you better not embarrass me by having dirty underwear. huh! if I'm in an accident theres a chance my underwear will be stained or full haha

If the rumours are true and Barclay's is deliberately delaying Apple Pay in order to push their own mobile payment solution, then that is symptomatic of a negative attitude towards customer service. It's not the way a customer-centric organisation would behave.

I don't have any problem with them developing their own payment system, in parallel with Apple Pay. But they should be treating all their customers equally, regardless of what device - and what payment system - they wish to use.

oh the irony of that paragraph :p:D

apple *cough*

They get the device account number. Merchants do not have access your bank card number through Apple Pay.

Given the DAN (Device Account Number) doesn't normally change, I'm not seeing this as being much better than the old situation as far as privacy. Yes, easier to change if the number is stolen. A call to the credit card company and they deactivate the DAN and push a new one instantly.

I'm also guessing, but haven't proven, that the DAN will only be accepted if a charge through Apple Pay. That is, if someone figured out your DAN they couldn't use it for a telephone/internet/swipe charge. I've also noticed that swiped cards give the owner's name to the reader. Not sure if chip/nfc transitions do this or not. I'm still waiting on new hardware for our biz.

I'm more interested in Halifax updating their app to use Touch ID than adding support for Apple Pay.

Pity you can’t pay friends by touching 2 iOS devices together.

Apple have applied for a patent that if watch user bump their wrists together they'll be able to send cash. Being able to transfer money at a bump of the phone would be good. Also this would annoy Barclays and their pingit service. Has any here used PAYM? It seems to be one of the most widely used forms of person to person payments (Among the banks) yet no one i know has every used it.

Can you hep me? I am in UK with US Apple ID. I have iPhone 5 and Apple Watch. How to activate Apple Pay when it is officially ready. I don't have options in my iOS Watch app for this.
