...I'd say you were wasting your money and time. Depending on your oil, of course. (Delvac 1, 10k intervals. My motor will make 300k easy like this.)

I think people should have the freedom to change their oil as often as they want to with out the fear of being persecuted.

And to be quite frank, the ban was probably warranted. Your comment regarding Mobil 1 is complete nonsense and I'm highly suspect of the other, although I'm willing to listen to a well-researched claim. You're probably dealing with a crowd of people who appreciate intelligent discussion, and silly comments such as yours are simply irritating. As I type this, I'm still irritated by your Mobil 1 comment.

As a side note, I've used Mobil 1 in my VW for seven years. I change the oil every 20,000 miles, and the filter every 10,000 miles. After 151,000 miles, it still runs perfect and engine compression is well within specification.

And to be quite frank, you sound very much like one of THEM. I think you would do very well over there as a new member. With your opinion of Mobil 1, they would embrace you with huggs and kisses. Myself, I feel like an excaped political prisoner seeking the comfortable asylum of MacRumors. :D

^ LOL.

You guys are hilarious.

You know, this thread has succeeded.

Succeeded in that it has given me deep urge to register on their forums for the sole point of raising hell.

"I was changing my oil the other day, and the soda bottle I was trying to catch the oil in was not enough. But I couldn't let the oil spill out onto the grass, so I plugged the hole with (embarrased) a peice of gum.

Well, my brother didn't know what I was doing, so he put the filter back on, without removing the gum, and drove off.

Anyway...I make my own oil, because synthetics you buy at the store are gimics."

Should such a post go over well? :D

New 900w-69 Oils Out Next Tuesday! I Have An Erection Already!

Now, that's funny :D

I am sorry for laughing. I am sure this is a traumatic experience. But, I am reminded of something a friend showed me several years ago. It was a web-site named HamstersInBondage.Com. It actually had pictures of hamsters with little ropes, handcuffs and little hats (I was told were called discipline helmets). I am sure the whole thing was a joke and I could not locate it years later.

If your site is even remotely sponsored by the petroleum industry, I can surely understand getting banned for any 'out of line' behavior. The shortest book ever written must be "Likable Oil-men"!

A MacRumors member over there would be like an M60 machine gun cutting through a warehouse full of styrofoam.

Shell oil has a Viscosity Calculator for people who like to do their own mixes.

There's one guy over there that owns the whole board. The board is funded by member's donations and subsidized by Castrol oil which is owned by BP. I never once said anything bad about Castrol; just Mobil 1, which is owned by Exxon Mobil.

So basically I have 3 strikes against me:

1) I think M1 is an extremely overrated product - many better oils out there for less $.
2) I think anything thinner than 5W-30 is too thin. My favorite oil being 10W-40.
3) I like to change oil often. If I go longer than 4 months, I get the shakes. :D

I wonder what will happen if someone post this thread link over at their forum. :D

Which one is better mac fan or a mobil 1 fan? :p

So, if they think that Mobil 1 makes their engines run noisy, why not switch??

The thing is, M1 is only noisey with 10% of the cars it goes into. And if someone over there makes a comment as to such, they are immediately chastised by the M1 cult, told that the noise in not harmful and to keep using it. Myself, I equate any kind of valvetrain noise with poor lubrication. The right oil WILL keep your engine running smoothly and quietly.

At least a thick oil will.

Oil for gasoline engines is pretty much all the same, minus the marketing and rabid brand loyalty. Valvetrain noise doesn't mean anything, just like wear tests usually mean nothing. The car will rust away before a crappy oil will abrade the cylinder walls or deform a cam lobe. Just change when the manufacturer recommends with what they recommend and don't worry.

(disclaimer: My car requires a group IV synthetic feedstock-based oil because it's an EGR diesel and only group IV will properly hold particulate soot in suspension whilst other oils will allow it to settle. Upshot - Delvac 1 [$26/gal] is my easiest solution.)

edit: an old used dealer trick for a noisy engine with serious problems is to dump some thick oil in it. So a noisy motor usually means something is wrong that has nothing to do with your oil.

HOLY SMOKES pseudobrit , for a second there I thought I was having a BITOG flashback. I had no idea that you were an oil person. But since you brought it up, last year there was something weird going on with M1's 5W-30. Some people were getting noise, and as soon as they switched to Havoline 5W-30, everything got quiet again. Some of the UOA's indicated that the M1 was shearing down to a 20wt after 5K, but this year, their 5W-30's are holding up. One thing I did find interesting though, is that I've never heard anyone have noise issues with M1 0W-40. So then my opinion is: Don't use any oil that is thinner than necessary. I'm running 10W-40 in my '00 Buick LeSabre that calls for a 10W-30. Fuel mileage is the same, but the engine is noticeably quieter.

For the record, I buy whatever oil is on sale (usually Quaker State) and change my oil roughly every 7k miles.

My car (Hyundai Tiburon) runs like a champ.

Scoff you oil connoissieurs, scoff all you will. :p

(I've actually learned more from this thread than the majority I've read on MR. I honestly never knew oil fans existed. I'm not such a fan, but it's cool nonetheless.)

Now if we were both logged onto the BITOG board right now, I'd be doing everything I could to sway you towards shorter OCI's, but since this is MR ... :D

Edit: I figure I could go through all the trouble of getting a different IP address and rejoin BITOG, but I still wouldn't be able to say what I wanted to, so why should even bother? I would have to completely change my views on motor oil to coincide with everybody elses; and to me, that would be very boring.
