They have a separate forum to discuss oil filters too. Oh and I should mention that it is a common practice for them to cut open the oil filter to check for pleat uniformity.

I can see it now in my mind's eye. Person cut's open oil filter to check pleats...

"hey that's a pretty good set of pleats, it would have been a great filter, pity I fracked it up"

Some suggested forum topics for the oil boards:

"Can I use vegetable oil in my car?"

"Is oil necessary?"

"Installed a Mac Mini in my SUV - do I need to change the kind of oil I use?"

"Best oil for a closet homosexual who is married with three children and very much afraid of his father-in-law who works for a major oil company whose name I shall not reveal here?"

"Popeye or Brutus - who should Olive Oyl choose?"

"Oil recipes"

Of course, it just had to be an American site...

A most amusing thread  My parents just gave me strange looks for bursting out laughing again for no apparent reason.

Oil, in a general sense, is a chemical compound that is not miscible with water, and is in a liquid state at ambient temperatures.

Like... Dishwashing Liquid?

Be a dear and let me know if they think it's a possibility... Could be a big saving for me, you know :)

I am shocked by your blatant lack of respect for oil and must insist that you are BANNED from MacRumors forever!

Actually they cut open the filters AFTER they have been through an interval, which tends to be messy at times. :D

dogbone, I am honored to have you post in this thread. :)

Keep that up and the mods will think you are me under a new username and we'll both be out...:p

Shrug. Count me in as one of those 13,000 oil members (I'm not really one never heard of the forum) but I'm just trying to say, I could see the appeal.

If you love your other machine as much as you'd love a Mac, why not debate and talk shop about what's best for the internals?

Guess that's just me though, after dealing w/ my car/bike-obsessed friends.

Oil for gasoline engines is pretty much all the same, minus the marketing and rabid brand loyalty.
That's what a reknowned master technician and mechanics teacher says. Mm hmm. I take that man's word for it. It makes sense, hell, there's only a couple of battery manufacturing places-- most batteries we buy (like Duracell, Energizer, etc.) and non-brand ones come out of those same few factories.

Why not oil?

Not as much fun for me, as if you had been banned from a sexual lubricants website.

Then I can understand you getting banned for saying, "KY Jelly tastes like paint thinner... and lubricates as well as beach sand."

Well ...

Actually, there ARE differences in oil. Not enough to really worry about and generally related to the additives.

My friend works in the auto industry and periodically tells me the results of the studies done by SAE, of which he is a member.

Is there a pocket protector forum?

Because you are getting darned close to needing it. ;)

But you'd likely get banned from there also ...

As a BITOG member and someone who has a few hundred thousand miles across a few different vehicles of Mobil 1 changed at 10K intervals(started doing that before I was a BITOG member) this ancient thread has been an interesting read.
