Along with iMessage and probably Apple themselves, it'll be short lived if the UK government has its way. They're on a massive war against encryption right now, using terrorism as the main bogeyman to sell the idea of having government backdoors in all encryption (which Apple would never stand for). There's no way they'll be happy with the idea of high privacy transactions like this.

It'll take more than a petition. All signing that does is put you further up the watch list haha

I'll +1 on this. I've been with them since they launched way back when and I can honestly say after being with tsb, natwest and abbey they all pail in comparison when it comes to customer service.

Another +1 for First Direct. Originally switched when they had one of their "we'll give you £100 if you switch" deals, they even offered £100 if you don't like them and end up switching back. I didn't.

There's a lot to be said for being able to call and have a human answer, within a couple of rings, and no menus. Breath of fresh air. Sure, I rarely need to call in the first place, but when I do I want to get something done and get on with my day. After all the companies where you end up on hold to an overseas scripted callcentre for 2 hours this is a major, major bonus even if you only need it on rare occasions.

Sure it's 'slacktivism' but a petition is a start. It gets people thinking about it, maybe donating to help with events or attending etc. Everything starts somewhere.

It starts with saying no. All this ******** protest and donation just gives people a job.

If it smells like bullsh1t and looks like bullsh1t, then it's probably bullsh1t.

This stinks of damage limitation on Barclays part. You only have to do a quick search on Twitter to see the massive backlash against both their decision to not support Apple Pay in the first wave and then the launch of their laughable bPay solution. My bet is they saw how many people (including me) had switched banks because of this decision and needed to stem the tide by 'leaking' this news.

If they will indeed support Apple Pay, then that's good news for consumers but until it's officially confirmed by them, I'm not believing it.

Yes Barclays have been extremely silent, whilst at the same time announcing support for Zapp, Bitcoin and the laughable bPay crap

Twitter has indeed shown a backlash, but Barclays (and Barclaycard) have remained silent.
I suspect the rumour reported on MacRumors is just that, a rumour to do damage limitation

I'm looking at alternative banks, and if Barclays and Barclaycard do not support Apple Pay quickly, I'll move all my accounts elsewhere

Barclays to support Apple Pay is down to CEO Antony Jenkins being sacked by the Chairman - reason for sacking was he didn't like the way Jenkins was taking Barclays forward
Apple Pay Support for Barclays would join on Launch Date

I really don't think that lack of adoption of ApplePay was high up on the list of reasons that Antony Jenkins was sacked, if it even featured at all

The government won't ban encryption, much information going about it is misleading. If the government banned encryption or asked for access to it then UK PLC would go bust over night.

Also, this is only about direct communication, encrypted payments won't be affected.

What do you propose for trying to stop this happening then?

So it seems, despite Cameron's earlier comments sounding more far-reaching. Still, I tend to agree with Apple that we have a fundamental right to privacy. Are the terrorist and pedo bogeymen going to just say "k! No more communication for me!" - of course not, they'll just use Tor or some other method. All this does is harm privacy for innocent people.

I've actually just switched away from Barclays to First Direct, with one of the main reasons being the lack of Pay support.
First Direct have been good, still awaiting the £100 but it's early days. The only thing I miss from Barclays is their app and online banking, FD could do with taking note from them on that part as the FD app and OLB is pretty bad.

Terrorists don't use communication like Whatsapp or iMessage for planning attacks. Grooming people maybe, but not for anything else.
I agree with you that there is no need to use terrorism to get support for it. What isn't documented much is that the USA and other countries have already or are about to implement similar laws without any affect on existing services.

somewhat related: I love my freaking sallie mae barclay card....5% back on gas, groceries, and amazon :)

Too little too late

I (along with many others) have already switched from my Barclays account and into a new provider.....

I'll switch to another Bank this week if Barclays have not officially stated support for Apple Pay by Tuesday.

I've moved to Nationwide.
They've got quite a good selection of current accounts and while their app is a bit stuck in iOS 6, it works well and they've got quick balance on the watch which is great.

That's exactly what I thought. I've heard so many good things about first directs customer service but their online banking is pretty poor compared to Barclays. I'm pretty disappointed.

this bank denied me like 10 times when i apply ,they are tops

capitalone, paypal , and others accepted

Maybe I'll get excited about this when I get to use it but at the moment I really couldn't care less. It doesn't give me anything new as I've already got a contactless card which I use a lot.
