Canada's had all the hardware at 90% of stores for NFC payments for YEARS, the US barely knows what a credit card with a chip and pin is.

I don't get it. What the hell is Apple waiting for to launch it here?
We have chip cards. They don't have PINs though unless its debit. Big stores like Walmart and Target have chip card readers that make you put the gold chip in.

We aren't That behind after all we did get Apple Pay first.

It involves the banks and I'm sure the banks don't want to cooperate with Apple.

I've heard good things about Natwest Touch ID for the app, being able to pull cash out from a cash point without a card etc.
I'm with RBS (the owner of Natwest) and the app is the same for RBS as Natwest only with a different branding.
Anyway the app is pretty good. I can get a full statement from years back on it, transfer funds from various accounts (savings, credit card, etc). Those with Touch ID can use it instead of a passcode. I have never needed to use it to withdraw money out of an ATM without my card or transfer funds to friends and family but I can.
It probably has to be hands down the best banking app out there.
I have told Virign money that once they offer me an overdraft facility, Apple pay, and an app the same as RBS then I'll switch to them.
Virgin money actually have the same people who make RBS's/Natwest's app making theirs, so that bodes well for when their app launches.

Yes, like RBS, who almost have a major outage every year.

Some bespoke solutions aside, Bank core IT infrastructure are the same platforms that run other businesses (Windows, Exchange, CA, RHEL etc). Granted there are more controls in place but its subject to the same stability and bugs that every other business suffers with.

Never, ever apply for a job at Goldman Sachs. Thank you.

So am I right in saying that for the UK, any of our contactless payment terminals will accept ApplePay (with £20 cap) or is it just the launch partners?

Wish I wrote the headlines and articles. Maybe I should start a website.

I like mine better :)

I'd love a tech blog adopting real talk.
Much more entertaining and without all the PR white wash talk.

Tell me when you run one, I'll follow you in a heartbeat.

What my main concerns are the fact that they are so crap with technology. I remember when Contactless first came out and was limited to London postcodes only and waiting for a long time. Their banking app is terrible and has only been recently changed to not having to have a physical authenticator present.

I've heard good things about Natwest Touch ID for the app, being able to pull cash out from a cash point without a card etc.

I think what I'm likley to do then is set up a bank account elsewhere but keep my ISA savings account with HSBC until April then.

My main account is with RBS. Since none of their accounts are competitive if you want good savings interest, I also have accounts with Bank of Scotland, Halifax, Nationwide and TSB.

However, I have stuck with RBS as my main account because I have received good service over the years and they are pretty up to date when it comes to the mobile app etc, adoption of Apple Pay etc.

If you are not bothered about your money not earning any interest I would recommend NatWest.

Apparently you can transfer it, I may be misunderstanding this though.

Problems arise if the money you are are transferring is from a subscription in the same tax year because there is a very high chance that a new ISA will require a deposit to open it which would be a further subscription.

Got a source/link for that? I hadn't heard about that, so want to have a bit of a read up.

Hi. Sorry for delay. Been busy :)

Yes, an Apple Pay contract was leaked last October, and revealed much information. One article about it:

Issuers’ Apple Pay Pact Assigns Remarkable Authority to Card Networks As Well As Apple

"Beyond fees, the contract also requires issuers to produce, through the card network, an extensive set of statistics for Apple regarding their Apple Pay activity, including nearly three-dozen categories of quantifiable information. Categories include number and dollar volume of credit and debit activity, average ticket, breakdown of transactions between in-store and in-app usage, and top 100 merchants by charge volume."

It should perhaps be pointed out that the reason why it's all these banks mentioned is that they're connected, so if one of them lets Apple Pay work the rest probably will.
  • Halifax/ Bank of Scotland/ Lloyds are all part of Lloyds HBOS. TSB was until recently part of this group until it was spun off
  • First Direct/ HSBC and M&S banking are all services partly or wholly provided by HSBC.
Barclay's stands alone, but has its proprietary NFC system going so is likely to be much later to the party. As is, I have some of my cards sorted and will be looking to test it out!

EDIt: www.moneysavingexpert.com as previously noted is a good site if you are wondering about switching banks/ general financial advice.

Had a thought - for those desperately unhappy types who were eager to show off their Apple Pay to adoring crowds of cheering shoppers but unfortunately bank with one of those not supporting Apple Pay yet: Simply place your contactless debit card inside your iPhone case, wave it at the terminal and none will be any wiser.

You're welcome.

A number of Apple Pay day one partners have already upgraded to the limitless terminals, .

But thats the problem - A number - who, which, where. They should be providing a list of retailers that fully support it as IMO they are the ones that matter. The ones that give me £20 limits I won't be bothering with (unless I had a watch which I don't)

Clydesdale Bank was listed yesterday and has been removed. Clydesdale say they have no plans yet. What a fail.

To me it's just the straw that's broke the camels bank. Clydesdale's internet banking is pathetic and they were probably the last to introduce an app which is pretty limited itself. I realise now if they were low on the uptake of that kind of tech then it'll be a very long time before customers see Apple Pay.

just use it and share the location data so it feeds back to apple, later open apple maps and you'll see the places on a map.

Was it definitely listed? I did not see it.

They are so behind the times. Only just about to start accepting online bank account applications!

And the Launch Partners don't have a limit on the transaction amount?
Not true I'm afraid.
The launch partners I've asked (granted, just over Twitter), all have the £20 limit.
That's McDs, BP, Morrisons, KFC, Costa, and one or two more I can't remember. All replies to say it's a £20 limit.

A number of Apple Pay day one partners have already upgraded to the limitless terminals, and I can only assume the rest have agreed to do so in the near future else they wouldn't have made the list on Apple's site. Well overdue though.
Do you know of any? The ones I'd expect to be limitless, aren't. BP, Morrisons, both still have the £20 limit.
