This "rumor" is ********. You can't have a phone without a wire. You couldn't use it while it charges, which Apple isn't dumb enough to do. Move along.

getting rid of a wired port altogether would screw me with CarPlay. I have a 2018 Subaru that has wired CarPlay and I'd be pretty pissed if they got rid of it entirely and I was unable to use it, or I'm required to not upgrade my phone. It seems they try these new "features" on 1 phone, and then the rest follow in the coming years
They wouldn’t want to break CarPlay or give customers reasons not to upgrade. I think they would have a well thought out solution.

a completely wireless device is absolutely stupid
Not to mention development on them would be a pain, wireless app install/debug isn't the best yet.

Sign me up for an SE2 tho! I can accept an iPhone 8 form factor with updated internals.

Refreshing the Face ID components only makes sense considering they are making a 5.4" phone which will likely require a smaller notch (or of course the illusive no notch) to have enough space for the status bar.

Imagine no physical connector and all of those "older" cars with CarPlay, but not wireless CarPlay. A good adapter would have to be in the pipeline.

LOL phone comes with CarPlay wireless adapter this is Apple not Samsung 199.99 to make your Carplay work again..

I already rarely ever use the lightning port so that wouldn't be much of a problem. I'll be interested in seeing what they do for charging though. If they don't include a wireless charger in every box, then you'll be buying the device with no way to charge it in the box. Plus, if Apple doesn't end up developing their own wireless charger, you'll be required to go out and buy a third party charger to be able to even use the device.
Plus Apple need to up from the turtle 7.5W wireless charging, and wireless charging in general needs better range and public availability.

No lightning connector? Does that mean USB-C or no physical connector at all? Hopefully the latter.

Actually I prefer the Lightening connector - it is easier to attach than USB-C. In any case, as a person who charges their phone from buses, trains, and portable battery packs while hiking/backpacking, I agree that removing a wired connector would really be annoying in the extreme. With a cable you can work with your phone with little hindrance, not so if you have to lay your phone down on a wireless charging mat.

Hope this isn't true. Given the rumors of some kind of Touch ID implementation coming back, perhaps the premium models will support both. A return to Touch ID in some way (either as an option or replacing Face ID) would be the one thing that would get me to upgrade from my X.

I'm hoping they remove all ports and physical buttons and old SIM card tech and go to a completely wireless solution in order to have a sealed high waterproof device with no earpiece or speaker requiring wireless calling and listening devices like AirPods and Bluetooth for safe driving and no more iPhone held up to your ear.

Since they have removed iTunes app downloads from device in iOS 9 and now removed iTunes app management in iOS 13 the next step is to completely eliminate iTunes for any reasons and only provide iCloud backups and restore, even in a DFU mode.

sounds good to me, who needs physical connectors anymore. give me a USB dongle that can give me wireless CarPlay in my car and I'm golden

It would be stupid not to offer any kind of wired connector. Wirless charging is and will not be as efficient, syncronisation is and will not be as secure and many recent cars with carplay won't work anymore. Wired connection is still a must.

You mean wireless charging contributes to global warming by being less efficient and wasting electricity?? (See, that's the way to get them to keep the connector. :))

It would definitely not suit those who live on their phone all day.

Those who charge overnight wouldn’t have such a tough time though.
Exactly.
What happens when you are out and about and want to top off your phone in your car, in an airport, on a long bus or train ride, at a friends etc. This doesn't seem logical at least not at this time or anytime soon.

If they want to remove Lighting and skip USB-C I hope they'll at least consider the smart connector currently found on iPads. It can charge accessories and transfer data, so in theory could charge the iPhone and transfer data to it, but the advantage is that you can save some internal space by adopting it and it offers a better seal as there is no hole.
I'd rather have that instead of just Qi charging

Please remove lightning and add USB-C. Would be so much easier to share cables and dongles with iPad and MacBook.

This stupid rumor comes out every year. I doubt we’ll see an iPhone with no charging port unless some company comes out with completely wireless charging that works more than a foot away and isn’t so inefficient that it wastes 10x the power it puts out.

Actually, I think you can. But you would need a wireless charging device that snaps onto the phone, rather than just lies on a desk. That way, the phone effectively becomes like a wired device while charging, even though it has no ports.

Yes. You can do anything with adapters. The adapter could have a wireless charger right in it, as well as a Bluetooth connection to the iPhone. I would imagine those would be bundled along with the first gen of wireless phones..
