Yeah, this report is BS. Most iPhone users don’t have USB-C chargers lying around. They probably have several USB-A.

My grandparents are actually in the market for a new iPhone. I can’t imagine them driving to the store, buying an iPhone, driving home, opening it up and there is no way to charge the dang thing. They would never buy another Apple product again. My grandpa doesn’t put up with ridiculous crap like that. I doubt most sensible people would. USB-C is still fairly new for a lot of non-techies. Even Android was on micro-USB for ages.

Besides that they would be made fun of for ages by everyone from late night comedians to the tech press. It would further increase animosity towards Apple.

They should offer the option to include these accessories at no extra charge for people that actually need them. For the rest of us, we'll do just fine without!
That would work in utopia but in the real world if you offer someone something at no charge they'll take it regardless if they need it or not. The current charger isn't given at no charge either. You're paying for everything in the box to include the box. It's just not priced separately. If Apple did some silly gimmick where they offered the charger at "no charge" they would just figure it in the price that everyone would take it. I would like to see Apple not charge for and not include it. This is the only way that any of this e-waste will be reduced. It doesn't do any good to have a one size fits all charger that you can use on every phone if you get one with every phone.

Honestly I only use the bundled charger as a backup for travel because it's very compact and lightweight. Otherwise it's the 5-port fast-charger for the watch, phone, power bank, somebody else's phone, GoPro, bluetooth earbuds you name it.

Personally I'd prefer no charger but instead an additional USB3-lightning cable so you could charge the phone from your Mac.

Apple was first criticised for not having a floppy drive with the iMac.
Steve Ballmer made fun of the first iPhone.
Then Apple received a lot of blowback for not supporting flash.
Same story with laptops and the removal of cd drives, AirPods, the removal of the headphone jack, the Apple Watch, there is a laundry list of things Apple was mocked at by people who just simply didn’t know any better.

And you know what happened? The industry would go on to copy Apple after it became apparent that there was merit in what Apple was doing.

Like it or not, Apple mainstreams things and makes them socially acceptable.

And prospers for it.

oh well.
there's also a laundry list of things Apple was mocked at by people and indeed it's worth mocking.
- one button mouse : well. can't Apple just accept that the computing world is meant for two buttons now? I know I know. even their mouses can do two button clicks. but really. let's be honest.
- trash can mac : "can't innovate anymore my ass" LoL I remember so many "believers" here defended modular expansion as future of desktop computing. guess what? it ain't here :)
- a whole new generation of butterfly keyboard as future of keyboard. well what happened?
- TB2 huh? TB3 huh?? and after several years, it's not yet widely accepted, and guess what? USB4 will solve everyone's problem.
- homepod. well I actually want to defend this, but the method of connectivity pretty much ruined true potential of this product.

you know. Apple is still selling a desktop with HDD equipped as primary. And overly expensive MP with the starting price of 5999 with 256 gig SSD. For the company hailed for their technical endeavor, that's tad bit cheap isn't it?

USB C wall chargers are not so common yet so they going to have to include one

Without charger Apple would basically sell a incomplete product because the phone can‘t be used without being charged. That‘s out of the question and would only lead to several class action lawsuits.

Actually, the funniest thing is that you think this is how it would actually work.

From an ecological viewpoint that sounds like a really good idea. Let people buy chargers as accessories if they really need one. Sooner or later, Apple will kill the physical charging port anyway.

I am with the forum members that believe Apple will include a charger and that this report is spurious.

To entertain the idea for one moment though, this is exactly how Apple will spin it as being good for the environment for them not to include the charger.

The reality of all the moves like this, however, is profiteering – plain and simple.

Were I and others to be proven incorrect and Apple do indeed release the next iPhones without chargers, I would encourage many people to hold off their purchase until this decision is reversed.

If enough people saw this as a tipping point for not buying straight away after release, the decision would be reversed pretty quickly I expect.

This is coming from someone who has only bought iPhones since the introduction of the iPhone 3G.

EDIT: By the way, my expectation is that not only do they include a charger, but that they uprate it from the, quite frankly, pathetic 5W version they have used for several years now.

Only Pro users get to power their devices back up after the first battery cycle.

5 seconds of thinking would tell most people you cannot ship a phone of any kind without a charger of some sort in the box

Can't imagine buying (or selling for that matter) a device you can't plug in to charge out of the box

Seems like a lot of people are misunderstanding the "rumor." All they're referring to is the USB Power Adapter (the little 5W brick) that has previously shipped with every iPhone; they're not talking about the charging cable itself. So I guess if you're the one person somewhere on earth buying an iPhone who doesn't have one single powered USB port available to you, you could purchase the USB power adapter separately.

I guess they have to start somewhere. It doesn't matter what they do because someone somewhere will criticize it. Apple is big on being environmentally responsible and I think this will be an industry leading step in the right direction. Sure people who hate Apple will criticize it and maybe Samsung will make another video like when Apple removed the headphone jack but they'll catch up sooner or later and pretend it never happened.

For free. Non-Pro requires a sub to keep charging.

I'd think I'd prefer lower fee than usual but enough that people won't just say yes to add to their pile.

People are dicks so the rest of us must suffer?

Yes, as is true in many areas of life. Is that really an unfamiliar concept to you? We are affected by the behavior of others, including behavior we might disagree with.

The issue here, however, is what if anything Apple should do about this source of waste. On that question, reasonable minds can differ, but I don't think it's unreasonable at this point for Apple to consider no longer including chargers with phone purchases.

Good riddance on the ear buds, if that means the savings get passed on to the consumer (lol yeah more likely higher profit margins which will be good for Apple stock). But getting rid of the power brick is just really stupid. Wouldn't this lead to class action lawsuits where consumers can't use the product they purchased because they can't charge it? I could see someone like my mom purchasing this and having no idea how to charge it, she has no usb chargers at home and her phone is pretty much the only advanced technology she has.

I know there's that occasional "never had an iPhone before" buyer, but how about Apple knocks off a bit from the price of the phone if you don't need a charger? Come up with some clever modular packing thing where the charge kit attaches as a little option for $29 or whatever. Apple is very good at that kind of thing.

Because, for every "first time iPhone buyer" there are probably 10 people like me who have USB chargers and 3-foot Lightning cables coming out their ears. (Not to mention all the micro-USB charge cords that come with literally every piece of small electronics I've ever bought.) At some point you have your "library" of cables and you don't need more. And if/when USB-C becomes the One Cord To Rule Them All, we'll all have those coming out of our ears as well -- and hopefully they can stop packing those with everything as well.

And as far as Apple USB charge cords, well, they kind of blow anyway and I'd just as soon buy fabric-covered Anker cables and their smaller, more versatile chargers for less money.

A charger will always come with a phone. That would be a very poor experience otherwise.

Imagine ordering a new phone and it dies 12 hours later and now you can’t charge it.

Headphones are something that doesn’t need to come with the phone because it’s an accessory of it.

A charger is a requirement.

I thought US federal law *mandates* the inclusion of a hands-free piece with all handsets sold in the country

Given that there's no federal law mandating hands free usage, etc. I'm unsure why you'd think this was the case.
