I wonder what the environmental cost is of producing hundreds of millions of Lightning cables, power adapters, EarPods and dongles to include with every iPhone.

It probably will never happen, but I'd prefer to see the iPhone sold on its own for a lower price with the option to add accessories you need at the time of purchase. I presume there's some legal requirement for including a charger at the moment? I would guess most people would opt for less than what comes in the box.

I don’t think so, I believe it’s just so standard that it’s almost unthinkable to ship without. Nintendo shipped the new 3DS XL without an adapter, a device where almost everybody buying would already have one, and still received major backlash. I think they break so often people don’t feel it as waste more of a “ill stick this here and eventually I’ll need it”.

It's just a prediction, but would you be surprised if it did happen?

Apple is going after PROFITS. They can charge the same on the iPhone and make a fraction more on profits per unit sold. It's the recent Apple way :D

Makes sense to me. Apple, as most corporations, go after PROFITS. More power to them. I never took the headphone adapter out of the box. A wasted cost.

Everyone that cares about the best portable audio quality should have a lightning dac/amp paired with your “hi-fi” headphones or IEMs. Otherwise, Bluetooth is good enough for the average consumer.

$9 is one over priced beer; or 2 cold brew iced coffees; or a large size chik-fil-a meal. We will be ok. We’ve survived.

Other Android OEMs don't include adapters with every phone they sell either. This is Apple maximizing its margins; nothing new. If you are not keen on paying top dollar for a newer iPhone X/X+ model, then see if Apple implements a more budget model since the $1000 USD price point will mean more marginal upgrades and less value. If you're dead set on the X, wait for a price drop. Just some ideas, nothing more than that.

Plus, you can save your adapters from older phone purchases FYI.

Don't see this as a big deal. Been a few years now and I would suspect those that want a dongle, have one. Otherwise they use the lightning earpods or bluetooth.

I have refused to buy phones without headphone jack. My old iPhone 6 no longer works, i went out buy other brand new iPhone 6. I absolutely refuse phones without headphone jack. Like I said before and I will not buy any phone without headphone jack. Even if means I need buy lower end phones

Okay? I'd imagine you are in the minority there, but whatever works for ya.

In 2020 they will probably remove the lightning port—possibly bundling AirPods. Thats my bullish and completely unfounded hot take. I could easily see them just not bundling headphones at all anymore

And people reflexively assume and respond as if this rumor is fact.
Because it’s true. And also this has been reported in the past. There’s no point in looking at every report or rumor as ‘just a rumor’. That would be dismissing everything other than iOS leaks until the official announcement. If you want to do that then that’s fine, not sure MacRumors is the best place to be though.

I can't imagine Apple doing this -- and then still include the analog earbuds with the phones. That would make no sense. I also can't see them including a wireless set. So either Apple stops including earphones entirely (which would be odd considering Apple's focus on music), or they bring back the headphone jack (not likely) or the dongle lives on.

"Because it’s true."

Oh, it's true because you say so. Got it. Can you post a link confirming your assertion?

They have included lightning headphones since they removed the headphone jack (iPhone 7, I believe).

Yep. For me I have a dongle attached to any of my plugs that are still 3.5mm, including Beats Solo3 (hmm...) among others.

I had a 7 and now have a X. I don't think I've used the adapter once. I use Bluetooth everywhere. Not having to deal with wires is the best.

Glad you're happy. I enjoy the wires which provide better quality sound transmission, no interference, and, most importantly, allow me to never have to think about whether my headphones are charged or not.

I think it's kinda cheap on apple's part. They make plenty of money already. Or provide a coupon for a free dongle if you want to save the environment.

No. I am about to take 13 hours flight. No way in the hell my iPhone can last that long. I will need charging my phone and using my headphone at same time. And no I do not want Bluetooth headphone, because it won’t last that long either.

Apple is SIRI-ously losing its “think different” swag. It’s more like “think twisted” or “think negativity.”

It's more like "Don't think at all". I wonder how much more hubris we can stand before Apple consumers throw in the towel en masse.

As another commenter said, I've always thought that at the extreme prices Apple is commanding, it would be a nice touch to pre-bundle the AirPods with the iPhone. And why not, a USB-C to Lightning cable, to, you know, charge your phone with your laptop from the same suppose ecosystem?
