There is no reason to keep the base iPad with A16, it’s a bad deal… Base iPad + Keyboard cost more than the MacBook Neo ! That’s cringe ! Why not update it ? Well it might affect a lot iPad Air sales, their main point those last years was Apple Intelligence and more features like stage manager (now on every iPad)… No one would buy m4 cause no one needs m4 on an iPad.

Here is my plan :

- Remove the base iPad

- Release a new version of the iPad mini (with a19 pro, people will love this one)

I think this is good for everyone !

Most people I know who have tablets use them without keyboards so using that cost doesn't really make sense. In my country the Neo (and iPad Air) costs over $350 more than the base iPad. Which is a huge difference for retired people like my mom, who also prefer the simple touch based iPadOS over a computer/trackpad.

You can use any Bluetooth keyboard you want, many of them are relatively inexpensive, or as @ScanTheNavian points out, use the on-screen keyboard.
Why not update it ?
The base iPad is almost certain to receive another chip update.

-Remove the employee who got rid of the base iPad

It's $250 less than the Neo (using MRSPs here, not EDU, as not all qualify for that)

That's a HUGE delta.

Considering everyone defending the Neo vs buying a WAY better computer (refurb M4 MBA), which is only $150 more ($749 vs $599), I'd say the $250 is pretty relevant.

One can use any manner of BT mouse/trackpad/KB with an iPad and come out way ahead here, and have all the wonderful parts of an iPad as well!

Just for the iPad, if I compare for normal prices in Canada, it’s 830 and the Neo is 800 (iPad with keyboard of course)

Apple would be crazy to get rid of the base iPad. This is perfect and inexpensive to introduce someone to the Apple ecosystem. I for one bought a base iPad for my children. The Bluetooth keyboard I purchased for my daughter along with her iPad still cost less than the MacBook Neo so I don’t know where you got your pricing from.

Again, most people aren't buying keyboards with base iPads—specially not the overpriced Apple ones.

To be honest, none of my acquaintances even use any type of physical keyboard with their iPads. The iPad being a "bigger iPhone" is the entire attraction.

These. I bought the small Apple BT keyboard when I got my first iPad ages ago. Came in handy a few times but has not seen the light of day in at least a decade.

And this. Add in potential sale prices (got my iPad A16 at $70 off), get a solid device for consumption, can do basic/simple creation, and more comfortable to use on the couch, in bed (read: lying down). Cost me $320 less than a Neo.

(For the record, bought an MBA M4 when they were on sale. Was assuming, at the time, that Neo was going to be $699 so $100 more [$799 Air sale price] made decision easy for me. Even at the $200 extra over Neo price, not going to complain and have a better [imo] machine [big plus: backlit keyboard]. Maybe a Neo in 5-6 years when the MBA is up for possible replacement as Neo is a capable enough box for the price for what my workflow will look like in the future)

Then they should put an A18 or something better in there! Problem solved!

There are use cases for a cheap full-size iPad lol. My brother for example! Dude's kinda destructive at times so I'd rather not spend $800 or whatever on a tablet. The $349 one performs more than well enough for his needs, if he needs more performance he can sit at his iMac or whatever.

Another much more common use case! Store kiosks! And other places where they need a cheap full-size iPad. Like cash registers, or mechanic shops, or maybe flight journals or something.

There's plenty of use cases where the cheap apple SoC is fine, and you just need the basic experience. Good enough for pdfs or a simple app.

if you desperately need a keyboard for an iPad day 1, then u don't need an iPad. u need a MacBook.

This will never happen since Apple needs an iPad in the lineup which doesn’t have a laminated display and anti reflective coating. That’s one of the primary reasons why it’s there

On a secondary note the first 4 generations of the “base looking iPads from 1-4 ( and the Air but that’s different) never came with a laminated display as well hence that.

The only surprising good thing about the base iPads are slightly longer OS Support compared to the iPhones with the same chip

I get what your saying but my parents who are in their 70’s buy the base iPads as perfect for browsing and reading books etc.

My daughter whose 11 uses it for school work and games and she has zero interest in learning how to use a MacBook.

I think it serves those markets very well and it’s cheap for parents and the older folks

Then who will buy the iPad Air?

Nah. The base iPad is important in the lineup for folks that only need a simple everyday internet terminal. Since its first introduction in 2010, I've only ever bought the cheapest iPad, upgrading every 3-5 years when feature improvements become alluring enough. I could care less about the specs. That's what my MacBook Pro is for, getting work done.

I purchased a A16 because I'm assuming it will be the last iPad without Apple Intelligence. Actually surprised how good it is for everyday usage. Gemini App works great with zero integration.
