Its not the first time he's caused controversy....Rookie doesn't hit Blalock; demoted next dayleekohler said:No, he doesn't. And he damn well better apologize. As Sox fan and Chicagoan, I'm quite frankly p***ed.
There is Guillen in February, telling Sports Illustrated that Alex Rodriguez is nothing but a "hypocrite" for even insinuating he might play for the Dominican team in the World Baseball Classic and adding, "It's the same with [Nomar] Garciaparra playing for Mexico. Garciaparra only knows Cancun because he went to visit."
There is Guillen this spring, commenting on a situation by noting, "In Venezuela, we don't care. We take care of [stuff] by hitting people." There is Guillen last year in New York, equating a homosexual with a child molester and igniting a brief firestorm, emphasis on brief. Good thing Ozzie's team was running in first place, or it could have been an actual, you know … issue.

MacNut said:Ok this thread has stalled out a bit but it is almost the All Star break, any thoughts on the season so far. The AL east is as expected, Yankees and Red Sox fighting it out with the Blue Jays pestering around. The Tigers leading the Central was a bit of a surprise, but they were expected to be a good team. The sudden collapse of the Braves and the huge rise of the Mets took me by surprise.

I think everybody believed the Mets had a shot, but the total collapse of the Braves, who began the season penciled in for first or second, is pretty shocking. I can't remember the last time Atlanta wasn't competitive. Over in the NL West, every team (except for SF, I think) has spent some time in first place, and still only four games between first and last. That division is bound to be a dogfight well into September.
The really jaw-dropping news for me was the report last week that Bill Mueller's playing career is probably over. Apparently he's got very little cartilage left in his injured knee. They are looking at ways to repair it, but the outlook is poor. He was at the beginning of a two year contract with the Dodgers. Fortunately the Dodgers have Izturis back, and he seems to be getting comfortable playing third.

Sayhey said:Damn, sorry to hear about Billy. He was always one of my favorite players.I am glad to see Izturis back. I don't know how is arm will hold up to playing third, but he has one of the best gloves in the game.
Let's not be so quick about the Giants, IJ, they were in first place a little over a month ago. Now, they are hovering around .500 and can't seem to put together any kind of win streak. If we can ever have Bonds and Alou in the line-up for more than a few days straight they may have a chance.
As to the surprise teams at the break, let me draw your attention to my picks way back at the end of March (post #241 in this thread.) I would especially like to quote my sage predictions that "[The] Tigers are my surprise team here" and the Mets as the winners of the NL East. The biggest surprise to me is the horrible play of the Angels. My picks are not looking so bad as we approach the turn!![]()
IJ Reilly said:Izturis says his arm isn't 100% yet, but that's what you'd expect after Tommy John surgery. Same old glove, though. It's a pleasure to watch his defensive play -- just about the only real bright spot on the Dodger infield this year. Furcal is a defensive disappointment.
aloofman said:Am I the only who thinks they should try Furcal at third and move Izturis back to short? Furcal has maybe the strongest infield arm in the league, but Izturis has the glove, range, and footwork to play better at shortstop. Maybe because of Furcal's contract they want to keep him there. At this point they have too many infielders, and Martinez is playing well enough to justify a lineup spot every day.
The local media seems to think that Izturis is trade bait and they're showcasing him at third to let other teams know that his arm is healthy. I'm reluctant to trade away Izturis right now. His defense is so good that he really only has to be an average hitter, and in the last few years he's hit better than that when healthy.
IJ Reilly said:Edit: As for expendable players, I think Navarro might be good trade bait if he comes off the DL soon.
LOS ANGELES -- Thomas Gregory Arthur, the baseball stadium concessionaire whose foot-long Nathan's knockoff came up short and became the beloved Dodger Dog, has died. He was 84....
aloofman said:I believe Navarro came off the DL already and was playing at AAA. Not that it matters now.
No way will the WC go to the Central. It'll go (again) to the 2nd place East team. I really don't see either the Sox or Skankees winning less than 90, even without their full pitching potential (look at last year's Sox, and this year's, and tell me which rotation and bullpen you'd rather have, along with the infield).MacNut said:Im certain that the wild card in the AL will be in the central and the Tigers will fall back and get the WC with the Sox getting the central. The Blue Jays will make the east interesting but I see it coming down to the last week against the Yankees and Red Sox.
I miss Lou. It made going to the Mariners worth going to, when the Yankees were not in town.MacNut said:LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Once the umpire called Roger Clemens' kid safe, a minor league manager threw a major league tantrum that would have made Lou Piniella, Earl Weaver and Tommy Lasorda proud.
It also cost Asheville Tourists manager Joe Mikulik a seven-day suspension and $1,000 fine.

It sure wasn't very fun to be a Twins fan at the beginning of the season. It's a blast now, but probably too late to make a run for the playoffs. Consider this. On June 7th the Twins were 25-33 and 11 1/2 games behind Detroit. Today is June 28th and they've gone 16-2 in their last 18 games to improve their record to 41-35. And they're *still* 11 games behind the Tigersthedude110 said:I think people will go into this season vastly underestimating the AL Central. The White Sox remain the team to beat (adding power to their lineup and adding Javy Vasquez, though losing Rowand is going to hurt more than most think, I think!), but Cleveland, Detroit and Minnesota will all be tough outs. <snip> Looks like it could be a long season in Kansas City ...
