What happens if there's a tie?

Hey guys, I should know this... What happens of two teams in the same division end up with the same record - do they have a playoff game  That would sure mess up our rotation for the *real* playoff's if it happens...

If the two teams are both in the playoffs (one will qualify as division winner with the other as the wild card), the tiebreakers are as follows:

1. Head-to-head record
2. League record
3. Second-half league record
4. Second half +1 game league record
5. Second half +2 games league record
6. Etc. Etc. Etc.

If two teams are tied and only one of them will qualify for the playoffs, they do play a one-game playoff with the site determined by a coin flip.

Case in point: The Astros and Cards will play a one game playoff if tied.

Location was decided by a coin toss.

THANKS!
too bad (for me) the Twins are 8-11 vs the Tigers this year...

PUJOLS!!! :D

Yep :D

The homerun was awesome, I just kept rewinding on my DVR.

I was at the game a few weeks ago against Pittsburgh (who better win tonight) when Pujols hit 3 homeruns and Busch went f*cking crazy, I can't imagine what it was like with this homerun

We'll see if Barry can put the priorities of the Giants ahead of his own when it comes time to negotiate terms. Let's just say, I have my doubts.

Am I the only guy who wishes he would just retire?

Well the Astros just pulled one out 7-6 in 15. And down the stretch they come.

I hope that long game doesn't throw them too far off course ... hopefully they can bounce back and unseat the cardinals.

My guess is Barry re-ups with the Giants for a one year contract with the Giants for 8 to 10 million. A Giants' option for a second year may be possible as well. Either that or Barry retires, citing family reasons. I don't see the Yankees or A's as a possibility, and the only other real option for Barry would be the Angels as a DH, but I don't see anyone other than the Giants taking on a commitment to Barry with the possible legal cloud hanging over his head.

If Barry plays next year, he breaks Aaron's record. I just hope I'm there to see it.

I hoping he plays in all of this weekend's games and the Giants can help the Phillies to the wild card berth and the Padres to the division title.

If he announces that he'll play, any bets on whether the Giants raise ticket prices? Any team would.

Who's worse Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens, Im retiring nope Im not wait yes no yes no, one more season ok maybe 2. Same goes for Jordan, If you retire thats it you don't come back.

Clemens has been the worst by far. Jordan seemed to legitimately want to retire at the time, but was too competitive to stay away. Bonds is doing what many players have done late in their careers: take it one season at a time. Clemens seems to enjoy jerking people around.

Now there's a true Giants fan sentiment for you. I've noticed something, especially this year, from both Giants and Padres fans, watching their home games against the Dodgers on TV. Let's put it this way: maybe they should learn to root for their team, instead of against the opposition. Who knows -- it might even help.

I would back off from that slightly. The real Giants baseball fans really do know their team and don't care as much if the Dodgers fail (with the obvious corollary that a winning Giants team comes in ahead of the Dodgers). But a large contingent of wannabes are only there to root against LA, using Giants/Dodgers as a proxy for Nocal/Socal. The big difference is, at the end of the year, if the Giants are out of contention but the Dodgers are still in it, like this year. At that point, all Giants fans are legally obligated to concentrate all of their mental abilities on willing LA to lose. (Admittedly, that hasn't been the case in years.) So that's where we're at right now. The wannabes, though, will be primarily rooting against LA even in June.

In all fairness, those Giants fans have a good reason to root against instead of for: no World Series titles. If they had some, they would have more reason for optimism about their own team. Instead, they have a bit of fatalism about the future. Also, Giants fans have told me that it irritates them to no end that we don't hate them as vehemently as they hate us.

Ditto with the Nocal vs. Socal rivalry in general. Whole legions of Nocal residents refuse to travel south of Fresno, but Socals almost universally agree that San Francisco is a great city to visit. Telling them this leaves Nocals disarmed, so frustrated that you can almost see smoke coming out of their heads. :p

Sure, glad they're out of the picture - but not totally for the Twins just yet. Gotta play them the last three at home. Tonight though, Radke attempts a comeback with a healing stress fracture in his shoulder. More than just the division is on the line... If the freaking Orioles could hold the Yankees to less than 15 runs/18 hits, Joe Mauer might be able to hang on to the AL batting title

And what a crazy game so far in Denver!

Finally, go Brew Crew (tonight, at least :))!
I hope to post the same smiley, tonight, for the Cards. :p
19-11 LA in the 8th? Somebody's hungry.

Nail on the head. I've noticed this peculiar geographical chauvinism ever since I moved to California. The fact that Southern Californians (assuming such a beast even exists) don't return the disfavor is greeted with much puzzlement and no small amount of disappointment. I mean, from my point of view I'd prefer to see the Giants in the playoffs instead of the Phillies if it came to that, but the concept that the Dodgers and the Giants are both California National League teams apparently does not compute in San Francisco. And it's not like I don't get the rivalry. I do. The rivalry is fun -- but not when it's carried to almost spiritual good vs. evil proportions.

Worst of all, from my point of view, this silliness is now infecting San Diego. I don't recall ever hearing so many "Beat LA" chants in San Diego as I heard this year. I guess this is one thing I'm going to have to say I like about Dodger fans: Even with all the disappointments we've been handed over the last two decades, we still prefer to root for our team instead of against the other guys.

Brewers up 9-1 in the fourth...still time for the Cards to come back, but it's looking like the Astros will be knocking on the door after tonight.

Mets announce injured Pedro won't pitch in postseason
Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Pedro Martinez is out for the postseason after an exam Thursday showed the New York Mets ace has a torn tendon in his left calf muscle.

The Mets, who won their first NL East title since 1988 with Martinez battling injuries most of the season, won't have the three-time Cy Young Award winner at all in the playoffs.

Martinez returned to New York after getting knocked around badly in his final start of the regular season Wednesday night, a 13-1 loss to Atlanta. An MRI showed a tear in the left calf -- different from the right calf injury that recently put him on the disabled list for a month and was thought to be his major concern.

"He did mention [Wednesday] that he felt some pain in the other leg," general manager Omar Minaya said Thursday. "The bottom line is he's not going to be available."
