Brewers up 9-1 in the fourth...still time for the Cards to come back, but it's looking like the Astros will be knocking on the door after tonight.
Yah, it looks like there's gonna be a .5 game between them with three games to go. St. Louis, you're makin' me suffer. :( Somebody rattle some wood, bow your neck and all that kinda stuff....it's only the pennant that's at stake.

Radke's BACK. And the Twins are in 1st :D well tied for 1st. Oh, and thanks to Cabrera for almost throwing a no-no against the Yankees! Mauer is that much closer to his batting title :)

[EDIT] 159th day of the season and we just set an MLB record for the latest a team has reached 1st place for the first time of the season. Yeah!!!

Somehow sending Weaver to the mound tonight for STL leaves a disquieting effect in the final innings of a pennant race. ERA 5.79, W-L 7-14. Is this some pawned off scheme from LA to further derail the Cards? How was he with LA, besides hittable?

Here's to hoping against hope and that ATL gets to Clemens, early.

With the Dodgers he was alternately solid and disastrous. From game to game and inning to inning, you didn't know which Weaver would show up. I went to a game in which he hit three consecutive batters in the first inning, then settled down and got the winning. He ate up a lot of innings and kept them in some games, but letting him leave was a pretty easy decision. He also threw a lot of temper tantrums on the mound. His poise could be tested pretty easily.

With the Angels it was only the disastrous Weaver.

You know, regardless of who you are rooting for (HOU or STL) you've got to admit it's given the baseball postseason an interesting storyline that's getting attention from the general public, not just baseball fans.

This last week has been so exciting and it's not even October yet!

p.s. Let's go Astros, lets go...

i'm excited for my padres :)

they are very close to getting a playoff spot. when the playoff tix go on sale im buying!!!

Sounds like he should be right at home with the unpredictable pitching in STL. To quote Fiddler, "meanwhile, we suffa, we suffa...".

Pretty cool rundown on all the possiblities in today's SI.

The Cards might have to play a makeup game on Monday. And tiebreaker games could continue even to Wednesday. How crazy would that be?

I was surprised when the Cards took Jeff Weaver. He was very erratic with the Angels, mainly on the downside. They kept his little brother and got much better service from him. I think the Dodgers may have gotten Jeff's last good season in 2005. He was a real workhorse.

Well, I'm going to our season ticket club's postseason ticket drawing this evening. With the Phillies having lost last night, the Dodgers are in a good position to win the wild card spot and have a long shot at the division title.

PUJOLS!!!
Renteria!!!
Cards and ex-Cards are playin', tonight. :D

They got to Weaver in the 6th.......so, here comes the middle game, Josh Kinney. You'd think an 8-3 lead would be enough.

Hell yeah :D

I never thought I would ever be cheering the Braves on though. I had the Cards game on the TV and the Gameday thingy on the Braves website open on the computer, and was cheering for both teams

Im sorry but the way the Cards have played over the last week they don't deserve to go to the playoffs.

Not that I want the Astros to go either as I want to see Clemans suffer, But you can't blow an 8 game lead and expect to be taken seriously.

I hope they've turned it around, but still need to avoid ending the season with just a .5 game lead. Otherwise, they'll have to play a make up game with SF on Monday, I think it would be.

Yo MacNut. You still a Yankee fan? The ol' merit number, eh? Sorta like how NYC boo'd A-Rod all summer, 'til he got hot. He didn't deserve that, either. :p

After he threw the ball into the seats tonight I think they are still booing.

All Im saying is that the Astros seem to want it more. A team should not lose 8 games in a row then cry that the lost the division, If they blow it they cant blame it on anyone.

No they can't. It's a good race and we're at the "what it is, is what it is" stage. No excuses. We'll see who wants it the most and hopefully will find out come the end of the weekend.

Meanwhile, in the wild, wild west, with the Padres loss in Arizona, the Dodgers are now tied with San Diego for first place after rallying to beat the Giants 4-3 tonight. It was a nail-biter to the very end.

NL Pennant Race Leads Blown

I believe there are actually 13 teams who've blown leads and ended up losing the NL Pennant, but I could only locate 12. Can you remember any of these baseball moments and how many games' lead they lost on the way to losing it all?

Bucky ****ing Dent? I was only one at the time, but I remember learning all about it. Aaron ****ing Boone hurt enough, so I can only imagine what '78 must have been like in Boston ...

Can you really count 94' since there was no post season that year.

Just a brief perusal of some of the pictures will illicit intense pain for some who remember. :D Who says baseball fans aren't masochistic?

Of course the '78 Red Sox losing a 14 game lead to the Yankees lingers, but I remember when the '64 Phillies blew their 6.5 lead with 12 games to play and lost it to the Cards on the last day.

Another one which stands out (not that I remember it) is the '42 Dodgers who blew a 10 game lead. They won 104 games that season and lost to STL with 106.

Right. That should be '95 Angels I would think? So, AL should be included with NL.

Cards: 3-2. Way to go, Spiezio. Looks like Astros either win tonight, or it's lights out.

Go Braves!!!!!!!!!

As I mentioned before, I never, ever thought I would say that :D I don't think any Cardinals fan ever thought they would say that after the beating they gave us in the 1990s. According to the announcers, at last nights Cards game, people were doing the Braves tomahawk chop and even chanting LETS GO BRAVES

Probables for Sunday:

Pettitte vs. Smoltz (Pettitte is 5-1 career against ATL)
Carpenter vs. Villanueva (Carpenter is 2-3 career against MIL)

All which means squat at this point.

CONGRAT'S to the Dodgers :) The playoff's could be great! Big day for the AL batting title. Joe Mauer .346 and Derek Jeter .345. Joe can't lose it on the last day!!! Always remember, "baseball is a game designed to break your heart"
