How are 2 underdog teams who weren't supposed to make it this far a boring world series? To me, a boring world series is when a team like the Yankees, who you expect to win it, do win it.
This was a one sided series, there was no drama or excitement. Most of the games were not close, Face it the Tigers did not hit in this series. The Cardinals Pitching was superior.

Say what you want about the Yankees but when was the last time there was a game 7 in the World Series.

When the Angels won it against the Giants in game 7 of the 2002 World Series :D :D. Who (beside the Giants) could forget that comeback the Angels had in game 6, on the brink of elimination? Ahhh, sweet memories. :D

The past 3 World Series have been one sided, sweep in 04' 05' and a near sweep in 06'

Thank you! I was so happy when NY got knocked out again this year. I watched evey game of the series and thought it was a blast.

I'm not only happy for Cardinals and the STL fans (whom btw I think are a pretty baseball savvy bunch), but I'm happy for LaRussa. He's distinguished himself with Sparky Anderson as one of only two managers to win the Championship in both leagues. The entire playoff and Series showed some of his finest coaching decisions, except for sending Pujols on a hit and run with Edmonds at bat. :)

NEW YORK -- San Francisco's Barry Bonds, Oakland's Frank Thomas and the Los Angeles Dodgers' Nomar Garciaparra headed 59 players who filed for free agency Saturday on the first possible day.

Five players filed from the New York Mets: outfielders Cliff Floyd and Ricky Ledee, pitchers Orlando Hernandez and Steve Trachsel and shortstop Chris Woodward.

Five players also filed from Philadelphia -- catcher Mike Lieberthal and pitchers Arthur Rhodes, Rick White, Randy Wolf and Aaron Fultz -- along with five from San Diego.

Three players filed from the New York Yankees: infielder Miguel Cairo, reliever Octavio Dotel and outfielder Craig Wilson.

Approximately 200 players are eligible to file for free agency by the Nov. 11 deadline. Under new rules this offseason, free agents do not face any deadlines to re-sign with their former teams.

The questions is who would want Bonds and his baggage.

Superior pitching?
I am bias I'll admit that up front (unlike Fox news). I believe the only dominace we witnessed was Carpenter and Rogers. The Tigers errors really screwed us. But the games were close. I dont get you saying they were not. Our problem was no patience at the plate.

I think this sums it up....
espn
Jim Caple is an avid New York Yankees' hater, the sports world's king of Gonzo journalism and appeals to bubble gummers who like know **** about baseball. He sums up nothing, in my book. Never has, never will, and he's another good reason why fewer people listen to what ESPN thinks.

I did really value ESPN once upon a time.

It's pretty much a shill (and a shell of its former self) at this point. Not worth much to me beyond college basketball. And their website is freaking unbearable.

This argument that "the best team didn't win" really gets under my skin. If we want the team with the most regular season wins to be crowned champion, why have a playoff?

Maybe baseball should start a college football like poll, where teams from certain divisions are simply excluded from the get go. ;)

ESPN is now a joke of so called experts. It is funny how a person gets fired because they suck at baseball (coaching or GM) and they fined new life as an expert on ESPN. They also have an extreme Yankee and Boston bias that is obvious to anyone outside of those markets.

A New York bias, anyway. We discussed this earlier in the thread, when the Mets were playing Dodgers in the divisional playoffs. The announcers were calling the games as if the Dodgers were there only to give the Mets somebody to beat. It's very strange, and very obvious, and even more strange for being so obvious. BTW, isn't ESPN based in Atlanta?

That'll help those who will forever think STL's win was a crime.

On another note, the Cards have some off season deals and resigning of free agents to consider. S.I.'s Nate Silver thinks picking up Jim Edmond's option for $10M is a good investment, arguing that the alternative buying out the option at $3M makes it a $7M dollar decision.

Using that formula is still a gamble imo. Does Edmonds have another year or two of effectiveness in him? Injury prone, his range at Center Field diminishing, his last two years' stats taking him below .500 slugging, and his tendency to strike out are negatives at his age and time. With Pujols, Rolen and Carpenter tucked away with signed contracts below market value, maybe Jocketty will go ahead with paying Edmonds feeling he owes him and/or the fans something and that Edmonds may help the franchise next year. But I'm wondering if it isn't time to tap the Memphis AAA club or get some younger blood to replace Edmonds?

I suspect the Dodgers could be interested in Edmonds if he's allowed to shop clubs and he's willing to take a one year signing. The Dodgers don't have an incumbent in CF or anybody coming up, and are in need of power. They've also got an almost ideal late-inning defensive substitute in Jason Repko.

Looks like we're getting warmed up for the hot stove thread. :)

I heard news about the Giants releasing Bonds, can anyone confirm.

I don't know the ins and outs of free agency machinations, but is there any releasing to be done? He's filed for free agency, but he's not under contract now and they have plenty of time to make him an offer. I suppose they can decline to make an offer (though I'd think they'd at least give him a lowball one), but I don't know what "releasing" him would even mean.

This is the last I will mention of the 2006 season.
NEW YORK -- A World Series to remember for the St. Louis Cardinals was one to forget when it came to television ratings.

The Cardinals' five-game victory over the Detroit Tigers averaged a record-low 10.1 television rating and 17 share, Fox said Sunday. This year's rating dropped 9 percent from the previous bottom, an 11.1 for a four-game sweep by the Chicago White Sox over the Houston Astros last year.

What made the low rating more remarkable was that this year's Series went five games and was not a sweep. St. Louis' 4-2 victory in Friday night's finale got a 10.3/18 in figures compiled by Nielsen Media Research, just above the record low for a Game 5, a 10.0/17 for the San Francisco Giants' 16-4 rout of the Anaheim Angels in 2002.

Games 1 (8.0), 3 (10.2) and 4 (10.4) also were record lows for their games, and Game 2 (11.6) was above the low of 11.1, set last year.

Still, in an era of declining network ratings because of the spread of cable television, Fox was pleased it won prime time in all five nights among viewers 18-49. In an effort to avoid low-rated Saturday night games, the World Series will start on a Tuesday next year, the first season of baseball's new TV contracts.

"We are in the business of winning nights and the World Series consistently helps Fox achieve this goal," Fox Sports president Ed Goren said. "There is also no questioning the tremendous yearly promotional power that one of the worlds greatest sporting events and its 15.8 million viewers per night provides the network."

The Pittsburgh Steelers' 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks in February's Super Bowl got a 41.6/62 on ABC, while the Miami Heat's six-game win over the Dallas Mavericks in June's NBA Finals averaged an 8.5 rating on ABC. NBC televised the final five games of the Carolina Hurricanes '4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in June's Stanley Cup finals, averaging a 2.3/4.

In St. Louis, World Series Game 5 got a 51.7/71 and the Series averaged a 48.9/65. Detroit got a 34.3/50 for Game 5 and averaged 36.9/53 for the Series.

I heard that the Giants were not gonna make any offers.
