You guys don't get it.

Next year you'll see Scott Forstall, in a video with his classic sincere awe/wonder look saying:"when I was a kid, I used to imagine what it would be like to have custom SMS ringtones, well, it's now a reality, it's actually, real. Sometimes I close my eyes thinking it can't be true, but it is, and Apple brought it to the world, it will change how we interact with SMS tones forever..."

(with a patented Forstall twinkle in his eye)

PS. I love my ip4, but that guy cracks me up.

This is exactly what will happen. "Ringtones your way. Apple, taking it a step further. Again." And all the fanboy in the crowd will erupt with applause.

such a basic right, but this is just another feature Apple intentionally disables from the user in order to protect their image. They don't want millions of iPhones playing monthly top 40 hits (Kanye, Fiddy, Bieber, etc).
When did choosing your own SMS tone a 'right' or 'human right'? Either jailbreak your phone or put up with it. Everyone bought one knowing what it can or can't do.

As much as having several people on one place having an iPhone is a pain (as most have the classic ringtone), vibration on the phone is pretty strong; so you know its yours.

Why would you want delete individual call records? Is there something you want to hide from the Mrs or GF? ;) :D

You forgot the....

"And we've made it just work. Go into iTunes and select music from any song in our library and yours. For only .99 you can convert that song into a customized rington and then put it on your iPhone. It's like a bit of magic."

A better question is why do you care if other people want functionality that either you have or don't see a need for. People have different needs, wants and use cases.

Do you think that the iPhone OS is perfect and needs no further functionality? I didn't think so.

Trust me, I´ve done tests with multiple people and the phone ear speaker is way too low compared to other phones. In public places I always find myself putting finger to my other ear and squeezing the phone tightly to my other ear so I fear it might even break it and trying to find the loudest place. It´s really stupid and embarrassing. :(

Can't agree with you. I mean I've got hearing damage and probably could use a hearing aid at this point and I can hear the iphone fine (and I could hear on the iphone 3G fine).

The only phone I've found an issue was my last Nokia (which got reviewed badly for that). Had to be on full blast to hear anything.

I might sound like a broken record, but I'd like to add that the iPhone Calendar doesn't synchronize ToDo items from iCal. We're now on version 4.x of iOS - the omission is dumb and amateurish. How hard can it be?

Oh, gah, the ical app frikkin sux in general. I downloaded haichu 2 or something that synchs with the ical (mainly cause I am using mobileme for the synching abilities which means I use ical) to get better features out of ical. I mean you don't even get to see the names of appointments on the monthly calendar, you just see dots. And no weekly calendar at all. And I agree about the todo as well (except for todo haichu fixes all of that).

Though if I didn't need to use ical I could find a much better calendar program (PocketInformant is an excellent one).

Shoot, ical on the Macintosh is a really basic program and could have better features (and they made it worse in some upgrade. At one point you could see the details of an appointment or todo just by clicking on it. Now you have to press get info to get full details. I have no idea why they modified it to be *worse*!).

It makes calls, it receives calls, makes texts, receives texts, does MMS and facetime. Apple's philosophy is to make things simple and easy to use. Does that exactly. iOS4 is pretty much the best out there, and I've used them all within the last 12 months (Android, Blackberry, Nokia). Nothing is perfect, but it's much more rock solid than the rest of the them.

I don't see why people are calling the ability to change the ringtone for a custom one a 'right'.

Oh, to add to the phone in-ear volume; anyone who can't hear it is deaf. Fine for me or you haven't discovered the volume controls yet .

here's an idea - stop projecting your experiences and use cases on everyone else.

Eh? It makes a better constructed debate than spouting rubbish or demands that Apple won't ever do. I could bang on why all the different mobile OSes are good/bad/ugly, but I don't have time to do that. Personally, iOS4 is right for me personally. Is that so bad to admit?

If anyone has any worth while ideas for Apple, why not e-mail them or Steve Jobs directly.

But that wasn't what you were doing. You weren't making a statement about yourself. You were judging others. And still are. "Spouting rubbish?"

Apple won't ever allow custom ringtones? You know this for a fact?

You can say you love the OS as is. That's great for you. But this thread is for people who are making improvements/suggestions.

So - I ask again (of you) Do you think that the iPhone OS is perfect and needs no further functionality?

LOL! The original post coming from someone called "wirelessMACUSER" :)
That's right. I've been a Mac customer for a long time. My new MacBook Pro (the twelfth Mac I've had) is an excellent machine.*

So while I'm an Apple enthusiast, I'm also outspoken on the facets of the company I find unacceptable, and detrimental. If they can make this much money being pompous ... Just think of how much more successful they could be if highly respected. All one has to do is to look across the blogosphere to see that there are many people who feel this way.*

Just because I enjoy using their products, doesn't mean I have to agree with the way Apple has morphed from a good, right thinking company, to a greedy blood sucking machine. The disrespect and contempt the CEO shows customers speaks volumes about his loss of self control. I don't care how much revenue Apple generates, that by itself is only impressive to those shallow individuals that value monetary wealth and nothing else.*

Finally anyone with experience knows there is a large share of Apple followers that are fanboys that act like lemmings. My post did not declare all Mac users or iPhone users lemmings. *They are just one group of customers unique to Apple. A refection of hero worship at work.*

Agreed 100 percent. I find the disconnect some people have disturbing. You can like products from a company but also acknowledge shortcomings from either the products OR the company that makes them.

That doesn't make one a "hater."

Thanks WirelessMacUser for your rational thought.

Although I agree with your statement about how Apple has become pompous, the only way to make them change is to hurt them in the pocket books. The fact that you have bought so many MacBook Pro's is probably not helping your cause.

I don't think the Iphone is perfect by any means, but I do think that it is best for my uses. Do I dislike the way Apple handled Gizmodo leak and Antenna gate....yes, but they also built the phone that I like to use most, so I either have to stick with what Apple offers or move to different platform, as many have done with Android. Therefore, unless a significant amount of people move and Iphone sales drop like a rock, I don't think Apple will change their corporate culture much I'm afraid.

Either you have a defective phone or a hearing problem.

My hearing is very good actually. I´m starting to think that the phone is defective, but then again the 3G and the 3GS were very quiet too, (but maybe just a tiny bit louder than iPhone 4). And apparently there are others who say their speaker is very quiet too.

Never had this problem with Nokias, loud and clear as a day!

such a basic right, but this is just another feature Apple intentionally disables from the user in order to protect their image. They don't want millions of iPhones playing monthly top 40 hits (Kanye, Fiddy, Bieber, etc). They want few select ring tones that when heard, are instantly associated with the iPhone.

I don't think protecting the image has anything to do with inability to have custom sms tones, you can still have those "top 40 hits" as ringtones and assign a different one to each of your contacts.

While I wish I could choose alert tones, it's not a deal-breaker for me and I defenitely wouldn't call it "such a basic right".

-Mark all emails as read/unread

-Enabling BlueTooth A2DP

This.

It took Apple TWO YEARS to bring cut-and-paste to the iPhone. TWO FRIGGIN' YEARS for a basic feature that Blackberry and others already had by that point in time. Steve Jobs claims that they took their time to "get it right", but my feeling is that if it takes a multi-billion dollar company two years to add a simple feature that was already on other phones at the time, then there's something seriously wrong.

I'm sure Apple prioritizes features internally to determine how to assign manpower and resources. However, Apple should put a focus on doing the basic things properly. Why can't I "mark all as read" in my emails? Why can't I clear my inbox with a simple swipe or press? Why can't I save file attachments? Where are the customizable home screens? After all, everyone is different. Kids may want a certain look, but business users want something different. I can understand Apple's position on Flash, but why not integrate the technology and add a simple ON/OFF switch to Flash Player in the browser preferences to give the user the option to decide whether they want Flash or longer battery life?

These are all areas where Android shines because it gives options to the user. Apple likes to presume what their users want, and Apple fans usually adapt to what Apple gives them in exchange for having something sexy. It's great for Apple to have started in a simple way with iPhone, but consumer expectations and competition from Android have necessitated that Apple start bringing user customizations to iOS. The same thing happened with Mac. It was a very simple system, which satisfied and awed consumers for a long time, but eventually Apple had to change things up in order to give consumers the OS experience they wanted - simplicity and ease of use combined with the ability to customize and essentially do everything you can on Windows and competing platforms. They need to do this to iOS quickly.

Why would you want delete individual call records? Is there something you want to hide from the Mrs or GF? ;) :D

I hate this sort of comment which is just an effort at being glib in order to dismiss a legitimate need.
There are times when I miss calls due to being in a meeting or whatever else and I'll receive a ton of calls. I use the MISSED CALLS list to remind me which people I need to call back. I'd like to be able to remove the individual calls I've already returned one at a time and leave the ones I still need to return on the list. No way to do this. As it is now, you have to either leave the entire list or delete the entire list. It's a simple feature really, another one that dumb phones have had forever. Again, just because you don't necessarily need the feature being suggested as missing OR there is the possibility that someone may use the feature for what you consider to be an illegitimate purpose doesn't obviate the need.

These things are so basic and no brainers so that all the phones have them... except of course iPhone!

-Delete recent calls one by one (can only delete them all)

-Delete all voice memos at once (can only delete one by one, major pain)

-Delete all pictures at once (can only be deleted by clicking every single photo and then pressing the delete button)

Now here comes the biggest issue. Much bigger even than the antenna issue. I can´t believe no one has complained about this!

-Phone ear speaker volume is way too low

I mean my grandmother can´t heart a thing with iPhone 4, but with her old rusty Nokia she hears just fine, which is much louder as it should be. I have a perfect hearing and it´s very difficult even for me to hear the other person, especially when I´m sitting on a bus or somewhere with background noise. I always have to shout to my friends "what? What? WHAT!? Please speak up!" It´s really embarrassing in public places and even more embarrassing that my friends are getting ammunition to bash my new iPhone! :(:p:apple:

So what is Apple thinking? Why can´t they get the basic things right?

Go into camera role, press arrow in the top right corner, select all photos and delete!

So true, if one were to make a comprehensive list it would go on and on. I say in most cases it's not that Apple can't, it's that Apple won't. One look at the companies culture of arrogance and elitism, backed by their blatant attitude... “we know what's best for you “ is proof positive that Apple will never get off their high horse.

Furthermore they have their legions of lemmings that will do as their told by uncle Steve, and buy any and all products with that fruity logo. Therefore at the end of the day, they validate uncle Steve's Ego and line his pockets with cash. And that, boys and girls is what Apple is all about.

OR iPhone buyers value what the iPhone offers more than they mind these utterly trivial issues.

I was gonna list something but I couldn't remember what the detail was because I simply stopped using it that way.

There is a sense that part of the charm is the practicality of what you do with it. I actually stopped caring to do the things I might have been thinking I need to do because the practicality of Apple products mold your habbits and your priorities. Everything starts with the soothing elegance/addiction, and goes down the priority list. Why would I care about doing phone stuff when I am busy watching the new Selena Gomez video from iTunes on an HD screen.

It just flips the priority of everything.

Why care about some complex detail when the simplistic and organic nature of everything invites me to do so much funner things.

I dont even download apps because I am too busy browsing the web, checking emails, texting and communicating with friends, consuming media of any kind wether it be music, videos, movies, YouTube, iTunes, Pandora, etc.

Its not that Apple cant or wont, its that they don't need to. Its beyond the scope of their product and their philosophy. -A philosophy (simplicity is the height of professionalism) and that has since become world dominant and millions and millions of people agree with and buy into it.

I don't want my actions molded by any one company or device. I like a happy medium. And it's always great to expect or request more functionality with every new device or OS introduced.

A company that rests - dies. And I'm not a lemming.

But hey - that's just me.
