They clearly put some subpar batteries in these compared to other mac models :/. Not cool for a damn expensive laptop.

Service Battery Status Indicator On

Thanks for the battery status indicator info.

It looks like I'm heading towards that.
2015 base rMB, 20 months old, 396 cycles, 4321 mAh, 81% health.
Have been as low as 65% briefly, often around 75% but still fluctuating a lot.
Seldom above 80%. Declining faster than before (the last weeks).

launch purchase 2015.

431 cycle, 75% (replaced by Apple in Nov 2016)
21 cycle 95% (it started with 102%, so i assume it will be going to replacement in another year again)

This is frustrating

Hello everyone, I am a new owner of an (used) m5 2015. It is still downloading stuff from one driv which is obviously draining the battery. Estimate is around 3hours on a full charge. Is this normal with intense wifi usage like in this case?

Which kind of real battery life should I expect once the setup process is complete?

The Mac is 540 days old, has 73 battery cycles, 4746 mAh full charge capacity

I think it depends on your usage. My experience is that reducing brightness to say 50% helps a lot to get me through the day. Even now with reduced battery health (4321mAh)

So an update on mine... 1 week later I'm now at

704 cycles/3988mah (75.8%) 2015 RMB so the actually capacity has increased slightly however now the Service Battery Status Indicator has switched on.

I've booked in a Genius Bar appointment, will let you know what they say.

18 months, 125 cycles, down to 84% already, I have 5 year old Mac`s that have better battery capacity. rMB is now pretty much useless to me as it has lost too much battery capacity too quickly. Highly impressed with Apple, now it`s just about extracting as much $$$$ out of the customer as is humanly possible.

I am going to get rid of my rMB shortly for the same reasons. I always bought portable Mac`s as they stood the test of time, not so much now, latest MBP is a joke. One of the most important factors with a portable is battery runtime Apple has severely depreciated the MBP battery capacity and the rMB`s battery can hardly last a year before the runtime is heavily impacted...

they will run a test, and tell you the battery is failing.

they will tell you they need to replace the entire lower casing for it.

they will tell you to pick it up in a week or so.

It's almost if I've done it just a few weeks ago. ;)

So, will only apple care cover that sort of thing or will they replace it regardless?

I just got a 2016 rMB and I don't want to have these battery problems down the road. I never buy apple care and never had to, but if this is something that would be covered I may need to get it. Which is ridiculous because the laptop is very expensive.

Don't know to be honest, looking at Coconut battery online, the trend is obvious, nor is my 2015 rMB wildly outside of this current trend. It`s disappointing as I have always got at least five good years of usable battery life (80%+) with all my other portable Mac`s. My rMB will be lucky to reach two years at the current level of depreciation of the battery capacity.

I was initially very excited by the rMB with plans to update on 2nd or 3rd Gen, however this has very much put me off, as it`s not what I expect from a premium product. At 85% of design capacity the rMB no longer meets my minimum requirements for runtime, nor do I care to be paying Apple for a new battery every 18 months...

I am also concerned the new 2016 MBP may perform the similar to the rMB. My well used 2014 13" rMBP battery still has 96% and my 2012 15" rMBP 91% of design capacity, which speaks volumes. For me one of the strongest draws to a portable Mac was battery runtime & longevity, however of recent it looks like Apple is on course to reverse that opinion very rapidly...

Not very promising.

Did you at least get a 2016 model battery which has a slightly higher max capacity (around 5544mAh) or is this impossible and did you just get a new 2015model battery (max 5297 mAh).

I'm heading towards the Service Battery Status indicator.
(20 months, 397 cycles, 79% health). Fluctuating a lot but most of the time well below 80%. Degrading faster than before.

Apple Australia will replace the battery for free (part had to be ordered) out of warranty by 8 months. So pretty impressed with the resolution.

congrats!! with this great 'deal'.
Did you get a 2015 model battery (max charge 5297mAh) or is it possible to put a 2016 model battery in (max charge 5550mAh).
Besides the extra battery time, the 2016 model is said to have better 'health' over time.

The part still isn't in yet, I'll be dropping the laptop off after the holidays so I'll let you know in about 2 weeks :)

Not using your battery to keep it fresh for the next owner (or garbage dump) is like not enjoying your girlfriend to keep it tight for the next guy.

MacBooks were made to survive thousands of recharge cycles. Enjoy them.

If the capacity goes down just get it replaced under warranty. It should be fairly obvious there's a problem before it expires (or AppleCare does).

Are you guys actually getting bad battery life? Like less than 5-7hours? Or are you guys just spec watching and upset the numbers are dropping? I had mine 2 months or so and don't even wanna check the capacity cuz my battery still lasts like it should

My battery time is low. Very low. I now find that I get the "Time to charge your laptop - battery is low" message a couple of times a day. It's affected how I use the computer. Need to find enough downtime to take it to the Apple Store, have them ship it out, repair it, ship it back to the store and then go pick it up. At least a three day wait before getting the laptop back and I need it every day. Such is life.

Just buy another one and return it when yours comes back in. You can probably easily clone your contents to the new one first then return the old one for repair, when it comes back in, return the one you bought. easy.

What is your current cycle count?
