Okay, iPhone battery died about 10 minutes ago. Charging it! I have to charge it through a computer though since I don't have the wall plug at work.

I remved the phone from the charger this morning and the battery shows 100%. An hour later, the battery is 90% even though I didn't use it. Now it is 85% (4 hours after).

I'm telling you Luminyx, I was having crap performance EXACTLY like yours until I did the discharge/charge/discharge/charge :D

Did you happen to "restore from backup" when you got your new iPhone? Instead of "setting up as new"?

The batteries are lithium based, and do not benifit from a "deep cycle". This is not the 80's with nicads and "battery memory".

*sigh* less than 20 minutes since my last post and it's 59%. I closed all multitasking apps. I've only used Safari a couple of times since.

Usage: 8 hours 57 minutes
Standby: 10 hours 13 minutes

[Again, keep in mind about 7 hours 30 minutes is from my sleep last night]

what should we be expecting for battery life?

i would think 8 hours of usage and 10 hrs standby and have 59% battery was good? lol

But 7.5 hours of it was from during the night. It went from 97%-86% in 7.5 hours (no idea what was running), so in about 1.5 hours, I went from 86% to 59%

Okay, so I drained the battery and charged to full. My usage is 56 minutes and standby is 5 hours and 21 minutes. 89% now. Good? Bad? Only change is 3G is off and wifi is on.

You're not FAR off but I can squeeze probably another 45-50 minutes out of that 11% that you lost.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm getting a lot better battery performance with the iPhone 4 vs. the 3GS. I used to struggle to get 7-8 hours out of the 3GS....but now 11-12 hours no problem.

With the 3GS I had to use a Mophie Air Juice Pack....now...with the iPhone 4...I'm good without an external battery.

We'll see how long it lasts over time. But extremely pleased so far.

It all depends on what you were doing for that usage. If you were on 3G surfing (you weren't since you had it off) that would be good. If you were listing to the iPod, that would be terrible. Understand?

Yours has been better than mine the past two nights.

Monday night did an almost full charge (98%), went to bed at 11pm - woke up at 7:00am and it was at 24%.

Last night did a full charge (100% and a little extra time on the charger), went to bed at 11:30pm - woke up at 5:30am and it was at 18%.

It was all standby time except for maybe 1hr of usage (not sure where that came from).

During the day though it's fine, I charged it this morning from 18% to 100% and I've been using it since around 8:00 or 8:30am and it's at 92% - that's with fetching email and Facebook on 3G.

Fink :apple:

To quit apps running in the background:

1) double tap "home" button
2) press/hold any app in the bottom task bar
3) all apps showing a "-" sign in bottom task bar are open
4) touch the "-" and the app will close

-aggie-, I understand what you mean. If only I could record where my usage goes to :(

Stats for today!

I charged mine to 100% last night before I went to bed, and woke up with it STILL at 100% That was a pleasant surprise.

93% - Usage: 51 minutes; Standby: 7 hours, 29 minutes
89% - Usage: 1 hour, 4 minutes; Standby: 8 hours, 10 minutes
81% - Usage: 1 hour, 31 minutes; Standby: 9 hours, 12 minutes
70% - Usage: 2 hours, 5 minutes; Standby: 10 hours, 2 minutes
64% - Usage: 2 hours, 22 minutes; Standby: 10 hours, 39 minutes
49% - Usage: 3 hours, 3 minutes; Standby: 12 hours, 14 minutes
19% - Usage: 4 hours, 54 minutes; Standby: 15 hours, 40 minutes
18% [right now] - Usage: 5 hours, 0 minutes; Standby: 15 hours, 49 minutes

I've been having similar issues, but I was seeing this on my 3GS as well. Where basically I have/had nothing running but overnight I'd lose 5% or more. Turning off Location Services does seem to help, as does making sure WiFi and Bluetooth, etc are off. I wish there was some sort of "power saving" or "Night Mode" button that would automatically shut everything down and/or close out stuff in the multi-task bar. Anyone want to write an app to do it? :D

I've run Battery Doctor Pro twice now for the recharge cycling and each time afterwards, the battery seems to perform better, but then eventually it seems to get worse again. Of course all of this has not been very scientific as I haven't kept perfect track of what things I had on/off and how much I am losing.

Mine seems quite bad. I just looked at my usage and aparently I have 1 day 1hr of usage as well as the same for stand-by. Of course I haven't actually been using it for 1 day 1 hour, that's when it's just been on my desk.

So I can only guess that an App was constantly running. Now to see if it's better with all apps closed.

True background running Apps are rare but easy to spot. If running there will be a arrow or play icon in your top task bar. If you don't see one of these icons no Apps are running in the background.

Actually, that little blue/purple arrow in the upper-right corner means that a location-based app is currently running.

I'd say that there may be something wrong. Also, not sure if it's relevent, but if you live in an area with crap signal, and your phone has to search hard for it, that would effect your battery life. I would think about sending it in though as if your under normal conditions, your battery life seems poor. Last night I got 6 hours 40 minutes of use and 16 hours of standby when the phone hit 1%, and that was with heavy use of the phone with my phone getting crap signal inside fhe building that I work in. Streaming music and videos over 3G and wifi, surfing over 3G and wifi, 30 or so texts in and out, some pictures and video, using the gps for about 10 minutes, sending some picture mail, and using the new flashlight app for a little bit. I probably would have killed my 3GS battery twice with all that I did, lol. My settings are: 3G always on, Bluetooth off, wifi off (unless in use) gps off (unless in use) brightness at about 45-50% with auto brightness on.

That's about what I'm getting. Currently at 22% - 5 hours, 47 minutes usage; 17 hours, 7 minutes standby.

Think I might of found out why everyone's battery is draining too fast. I upgraded to the new 4.0 software a few weeks. I found this link, hopefully this solves the problem.

http://simpleleapsoftware.com/blog/how-to-terminate-background-applications-on-your-iphone-4/159/

I do this all the time but i remember seeing in another thread where someone emailed S jobs stating its such a hassle constantly terminating apps, and he replied there would be no reason to do so and to "trust the iphone". there are so many conflicting bits of info. im tired of it lol :p

Mine is odd. Percentage wise, it drains really fast for the first 50% and then it slows down. I get around 7 hours of usage using push on BeeJive most of the day thanks to my girlfriend who's in England currently, but the other night I had 1.5 hours of usage before I hit 90% on it when I unplugged the phone immediately after it hit 100% charging.

I hadnt had a problem with battery life until yesterday when mine went to crap.

I had been able to get two days of use out of a full charge and since I got my phone I have I let my battery go down to zero then do a full charge twice. Yesterday my phone had 50 some percent in the morning, went golfing and put my phone in my bag.

After golfing I used it on edge and the battery drained very fast. My phone was also getting really hot. Did this for the rest of the night and I had to charge it two separate times to 50% and it still died later that night. Plugged my phone in and turned it off to leave it charging over night.

These are my usage statistics for today, doing nothing besides using the internet while connected to Wifi. Phone is on auto-brightness around 50% and I turned location services off. Fetch every hour. Changed all my settings to these and it still got this bad of battery life.

Horrendous. My phone also seems to get hot when I use it for even a short amount of time and I can tell the heat is coming from the middle right of the phone when looking at it from the back. Im guessing this is where the processor is.

Gonna try doing a discharge/charge again but if it doesnt get better Im going to talk to Apple.

I know this thread is old by this forum's standards, but I thought I'd add to the battery distress. I fully charged mine from my MBP and have been only on Wi-Fi.

Now I've been playing WSOP, texting, and maybe used Safari a bit, but nothing excessive at all.

That seems pretty normal to me.

That seems pretty normal to me.

Does it? I guess after I checked the listed specs on Apple's website, it said "Up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi", and at that rate if I stayed on Wi-fi, I'd be good for about 8 hours. Maybe just because I expect it to be a do-all, be-perfect type of phone I expect the battery to last forever.

Wait until it actually dies before you judge. Like I and others have said, it seems to fly through certain portions of the battery and lasts forever during others. Mine can go from 100 to 80 in like an hour and a half and then last 2 hours between 79% and 55% on normal, non-iPod usage. I usually get 8 hours of normal usage out of the phone most of the time which I think is good. I'm not sure what those people who have 10+ hours of non-iPod use are going. I have all my settings turned on. Push everything, etc...
