I did this and haven't tested the battery yet because it's still plugged in... however, I seem to notice that my phone keeps going from 3G to wireless and back and forth much more often than it used to (if it even did used to). I'm on my home wireless network and have never had connection problems. This is bothering me.

restore and setup as new worked for me

That seemed to work for me, I did not have to reactivate. I did not back up to my old file, just started over after the restore, although OP may have more insight if that matters. It's been almost 4 hours, down to 98%, very little activity, but that's very different from what I had going on before the restore.

seems to have worked for me also. No where near the level of battery loss I was previously experiencing.

I don't get what the might be fixing?

Well I don't know what the hell happened to mine but it's about twice as worse as it was before... I'm doing another restore now.

What the f this is pissing me off. I just restored again and it still keeps going from 3G to wireless.

I've never had luck with getting a new version of iphone hardware and using a backup to restore that was from an older version of hardware. I too had the battery rapid drain issue and tried the restore and then using a backup to setup the phone. Did not work. I took it upon my self to do a restore and setup as new phone which has solved many problems for me in the past when getting new hardware. I must say that so far so good. Battery life is like my iphone 4 used to be and quite normal. I am at 63% with normal usage with wifi and bluetooth on with a charge from 2 days ago. Before I did this restore, I would have to charge the phone at the end of the day.

Good post, OP.

I agree with everything you said except #5. Like others have also mentioned, by doing step #5, you're basically negating the whole "Set up as new phone"

Here's what I did:

After I set up as new phone, it transferred back all my apps and all that stuff. Then, all I was really missing to have a fully functioning phone was my contacts, so I just hit "ON" for Contacts in the iCloud settings (note: my iCloud isn't turned on, it's just 'there' because I put in my Apple ID during the setup process). Once I turned on Contacts, it sync'd my contacts, and then I clicked OFF again for Contacts, and chose "Keep existing data on phone"

I think that's the best way to go about doing a fully "clean" restore process. Hope this helps.

What usage/standby time are you getting after going through the process? I setup my 4s restoring from an iCloud backup of my 4 and get 8.5 hrs usage, 17 standby with 3G, wifi, Bluetooth, and all services enabled.

Doing the back up does not change the software. This only uploads your previous text/picture mail, voice memos, contacts, pictures, and call logs/voicemail. This does not upload anything else. It will automatically start downloading your apps once signed into iCloud. I was losing battery percentage at about 1-3% every 5 minutes, even in standby. Once I did this process it has helped out tremendously! I now lose about 1% every hour in standby.

My phone was fully charged at 12am I text for 2 hours on and off and went to bed 5am this morning it's now 6:20pm and my phone is sitting on 93% battery. I have the extended battery for my Thunderbolt. Maybe those of you who like long battery life should go another avenue. If you don't like the situation move to a new environment.

I am going to wait out this storm to make sure power is secure by the time I try this. But I am gonna keep an eye of this forum to see if people try this and it works.

So we can restore the backup after we setup as new device?

Thanks guys!

Yep you have the option to restore everything with a back up you made before you restored your phone.

Do you have anything constructive to contribute to this discussion other then making ignorant comments? You have now done this type of thing in several threads discussing the iPhone.

I want to try this method but I simply do not want to lose my app data. I've made immense progress on my games and I dont want to lose all of it. The link the OP posted - does that help restore app data? And if it does how is it any different from the initial restore from backup I did when I first got the device? I want to try this, but I'm afraid of losing app data and having no positive results to show for it. Anyone have any insight to help?
