can we just bring in to exchange for a new one?
i just disappiointed at this battery life... worse than my 3gs.. and gets hot very easily .

If you can prove your's sucks, yes (screenshots). But I would suspect apple if they are aware of the issue are still trying to figure it out for themselves and try to isolate it to a hardware or software issue. Given the phone is so new, that's gonna take a little bit of time.

My Genius Bar appointment was subpar. I was able to show the excessive standby battery drain.

In the end, it was blamed on the iOS and that I was downloading data? I said what data, the email accounts are gone. If its the iOS, why are my other devices behaving normally? He said "it must be random". Didn't care for the line of reasoning, but he had no other ideas. Said I was the first to come in with that problem.

They had no replacement phones or batteries. Options were order with no obligation to accept and wait it out or nothing. So, the new phone was ordered. Manager ended up comingover because he could tell I wasnt happy; gave me his business card and said he'd be in touch. I'm testing a few more things to see if I can see some improvement. On my nightstand with 97%; see where I sit in the morning.

I'm not reading through 32 pages of this crap, but is this strictly a 4S issue or is decrease battery being seen on the 4 and 4S? Obviously if it's only 4S it's likely a hardware issue, while if it's both it's a iOS 5 issue.

I've seen some indications of battery drain with the 3GS and 4, but overwhelmingly the 4S. I asked the tech if it made since that the 3GS, iPad 1 and 2, and my wife's 4S all behaved perfectly, how could it be a iOS issue? Only to hit my phone in the lot I manage? He was baffled, and just called it random.

Also, he kept saying "the phone has only been out a few days! The iOS has only been out a week!" which seemed to be reaching a bit. I don't think Apple believes anything is widespread wrong; a large majority are happy (my wifes 4S battery works perfectly).

I must say.. since turning off Ping, Set Timezone, and the Diag/Usage stuff I made it through an 8hr shift (8hr of standby, and 40mins of usage) to 90%. Now I'm upto 1hr 53m of usage and 11h 34mins of standby and at 69%. Not too bad...

Not a shock, they didn't think there was a reception issue with iPhone 4.

This poll would seem to indicate it's an iOS issue.

Yeah, it's just seems (through reading) the 4s is getting hit the hardest. I realize all the specs on the battery are less on the 4s, but it seems to be more severe on the S.

What Apple wants you to think they think, and what they actually think are generally very different, and the circle of culpability is extremely tight. Store managers are not even privy to most of corporate's machinations.

When's the last time Apple publicly admitted anything was a widespread problem? About the only thing I can think of is the iPhone price drop debacle a few years back.

I went from an iPhone 4 where I'd go a whole 16 hour day with 30-50% battery left to an iPhone 4s where I left home with 100% battery at 7am and my phone was dead by early afternoon. I tracked it down to the Exchange Calendar in the Notifications area. When enabled, if I pull down the Notifications window I could see one or more lines flickering. i disabled the Calendar section in the Notifications window and today went from 7An to 7PM with normal battery drain. I re-enabled the Calendar in notifications and battery went down 10% in 30 mins. Disabled again and it dropped 1% in the next 30 mins.
This is not to say there aren't other issues affecting the battery, but I have iCloud on (sans Documents) and all location based services. I'm definitely on par with what I was getting on my iPhone4 and iOS4 now.

The thing that I find odd is when people chime in with "I did this" and my battery is back to normal. There's really no consensus, people are improving it from a multitude of different actions. In some cases nothing works.

for the 4S could the battery decrease be because of having 3G on all the time. cuz i use to have the 4 and kept EDGE on and 3G only when needed. had great battery life doing that. stinks that att or apple wont let you toggle between EDGE/3G.

And don't forget a certain number of those "fixes" can be attributed to the will for them to work, and the fact that as each day passes, people play with their brand new toy a bit less.

My digital camera batteries always sucks the first week I get a new camera. By the time the newness wears off, the battery life is amazing.

Just under 6 hours of usage on my Iphone 4S... although this is average I did a restore to see if my battery life can improve any further.. let's test this out tomorrow...

BTW.. any of your phones warm?

I'm using my iPhone more on the new iOS so it's not the 4S. It's at 27% now since taking it off the charger in the AM. And yes, I use my phone.. A lot. Especially at work. I was mostly playing around on Siri, on youtube, watched some Netflix videos, and of course sent out like a million texts, a few phone calls.

Any iPhone 3GS, and 4 users with battery issues using ios 5?

But then last night I migrated over to iCloud from MobileMe, and then installed Find my Friends and set that up.

Sorry folks, I'm not going to read 11 pages. It's time for bed!

I also noticed poor battery life and discovered that iCloud mail was causing the mail app to "hang" looking for servers. I had messages delayed in the outbox while the spinner spun. I've turned off iCloud mail and haven't had a problem since. I assume the issue will go away when iCloud calms down.

Mine becomes hot to the point where it's uncomfortable to hold.

It'll heat up when i'm on Twitter or the App Store, just randomly, and the battery life would die fast. Like 99% to 91% in minutes.

So i went to the Apple Store today.

And obviously they can't replace my phone, because they don't have any other 4S in stock! Looks like we're out of luck guys, we have to wait for the next batch to roll in.

Unfortunately, i did a full restore. And that restored all my stats from Day 1, when i got the phone. Therefore the genius didn't have enough info to go by. So a tip to everyone thinking of going to the Genius bar regarding battery life..
do NOT restore your phone right before going.

Anyway, the genius bs'd about how i have too many notifications, or what not. But he did say that if my phone still acts funny to come in later, which i will most likely do.

For now i'm trying to use my phone and not worry about the battery life as much..

if we do need a new phone,do we get a certain "ok its passed the 30 days but well replace it" since we were early adopters? I would think so right? my phone gets a bit hot for no reason but could just be me bitching.

Elanmike - thanks for this tip. Like everyone else, I've suffered from poor battery life on my first day of actively using the 4s. I did notice the strange flickering coming from my Exchange Calendar in the Notifications Center - hopefully turning this off will slow down the battery drain.

Did she give you a new one (white box) or one from a black box?

Black box. I got mine from a carrier but in Canada we have stupid no exchange past 30 min of talk time. Regardless of how many days you had it. But the devices are new right now. The battery seems to be better. I am getting about an hour and a half more then before. Up to about 6 hours of usage. I did the service disabling and I will see how it goes. But this phone seems better. My old one had an odd lag at times so I think my 4 hours max battery was part of hardware issue as well and. This device also runs a lot cooler then the last. My last one was waaaay too hot. Like this one gets hot but last one I could fry an egg in it.

----------

Also having battery issues on my 4S ATT 16GB. Noticed something strange today, plugged it in last before bed and when I got up this morning turned the phone on while still plugged and the battery showed 97%. Don't know if it made it to 100% or got to 100% and started to drain after.
Got the phone last week and been trying to disable functions as I go, but still not getting decent battery life. Also noticed the back of the phone getting very warm. All I have been doing today was checking the forums & checking email, no games or music.
I had the same thing. I exchanges mine and tonight we will see if it did anything. I started at 97 an next day I was waking up with 95 battery.

The only solution to this problem:

You can thank me later.

I don't know hat phone that is but that's not iPhone the camera is on the wrong side lol. Poor invert photoshop job haha

4S battery usage before I go to bed. Mostly browsing over Wifi. Exchange push turned on. iCloud turned off completely, removed weather app from notifications, removed location for reminders.

DNR serial, white box.

This issue definitely seems to be 4s related, as my wife's 4 is configured similar to mine, outside of my Exchange server settings. She got home today from work with 60%+ battery remaining (9 hr work day), while my phone was 100% at 8:45a and down to 56% my Noon!

I checked my usage, usage/standby times were almost identical at a little over 3 hrs, which means something was running and eating up resources. I only sent a couple of emails and like 15 texts, so no way I used it for the full 3+ hrs.

I did a restore and started all over, shutting down a bunch of notification services, and reconnected email thanks to everyones suggestions, hoping tomorrow is better on the battery. This is my first iPhone, not sure I can keep it if the battery can't get my through the day with moderate use. Fingers crossed...

My battery will only charge to 98% no matter how long I leave it on charge. Going to try an full restore to see if that solves it.

My battery life was awful today. I could SEE it dropping, as I was just visiting some sites on safari, every couple mins it dropped a percent - I mean like every two minutes, not every four. The phone died on the way home from my fiance's shop at around 10 pm. My iphone 4 NEVER died on me. I was always able to get a full day out of it, and usually more.

I took a snap right before it died, and usage was 6 hrs 24 mins, standby was 18 hrs 41 mins. All I did today was surf, listen to a podcast for an hour, a few quick phone calls, a few questions to Siri, and the aforementioned safari surfing.

Man... this really sucks. They're gonna need to fix this, and quick. IMO this is worse than antennagate (for me, anyway). The antenna thing was never a problem for me. A phone that wont last a day with mild usage? Now THATS a problem. My iPhone 4 was a trooper. I miss it's battery life :/
