Did anyone have the problem where you charge it up from 0% and it stopped at 97% and said fully charged? Mine was charging all night (9+hours) and I woke up to see 97% and the symbol in the corner was the charged symbol. I unplugged it and put it back in and its gone up to 98% now (and still charging) but its weird. Anyone else experienced something similar?

I thought initially that my battery life on my 4S wasnt great. After reading this thread I can see that mine is actually very good and the problems some of you are having are nothing like that I was experiencing.

So to add a bit of balance to the thread Id like to point out that mine is decent and I solved my removal of the 3G switch option buy just turning off cellular data instead.

The way I use my phone is: Connected to wifi in work and at home, no need for cellular data whatsoever. Then if Im not near a wifi connection I will switch on cellular data (for browsing, using Siri, or whatever) and then simply switch it back off when not needed. Thats how I used to use the 3G switch on the iPhone 4 as well.

The way I see it is leaving cellualar data on when not in use is like leaving your TV on when you are out of the house - a waste of power.

While true, and very logical...Apple's estimates vs what people are getting is with the cell data on, so apparently there is an issue...My guess is the icloud/location services accessing on certain apps people don't realize...like my flixster app had location services and drained my battery day 1, however day 2 with no background location serviced apps or icloud constantly updating, see a major improvement.

Now 3rd today (today), 10 minute phone call, went from 100 percent to 94 percent...thought that was a bit odd...

But I have a PHONE bacause I need to call / people to call me
If I didnt want cellular data, i'd have bought an iPod...

Basically, if you want to get good battery life with the 4S, disable pretty much everything that makes it decent, such as Siri, location based services etc.

Remember, it's a magical device.

He means cellular DATA as EDGE and 3G service....not GSM

So you can call and recive calls and text sms with cellular data off and use WI-Fi for internet data when you are at home and work.

When you are on the street and need some info of the internet turn the cellular data on.

Few questions:

When I upgraded my old iPhone 4 to iOS 5, mail wasn't part of the default notifications in notification centre. Given that the screen comes on every time a mail is received if you enable mail in the lock screen, could this be a part of the drain we're seeing? Especially given that it is possible that both cores in the A5 chip may be getting used. The way to test this theory is to see how many people with an iPad 2 (with the same chip) have noticed different battery life since upgrading?

Exactly. calls can be received as normal. leaving a power consuming feature on while not using it is like leaving your car running when you are in the bath (well not quite lol).

I agree though, that the battery predictions are below what Apple stated and on that basis Id expect apple to release an IOS update addressing it and hopefully adding the 3G switch back into settings.

My battery will only charge to 98% no matter how long I leave it on charge. Going to try an full restore to see if that solves it.

My iPhone also charges up to 98% but when I unplug the power adapter, the battery life shows 100%. It has to be a software problem.

40 minutes usage
7 hours stand by

86%

It was at 98% when I went to bed and had lost 22% when I woke up!

I wonder how long it'll take before Apple addresses this. I think it's obvious now it's not just a few people, and not just people being overly picky or something.

New phone restore yesterday with everything on except iCloud this time. Phone stayed 100% overnight. Will see how it fairs during the day

Why dont these issues come out during beta?

There was a drain issue, but that was only in early betas. Beta 7 ran perfectly and had no impact on my ip4's battery.

On a different note, I was able to take my iP4S off the charger around 6:45am yesterday, use it for about 2 hours of music and about 5 hours of mostly 3G use (~90%), with a total runtime of 6h52m and a standby time of 13 h. Not as good as my iP4, but getting better than earlier. I even had a full download of my Instapaper queue from scratch and some app installs over 3G. I'm thinking that removing my school's exchange server is what helped.

Weird. Charged my phone all last night after draining the battery, got to 97% and stopped. took it off and put it back on and it went to 100%. Took it off and it stayed at 100% for 1hours and 30minutes of standby and 11 minutes of usage (texts).

Just been texting my friend a bit more and now the usage is 35 minutes and standby is 2hours1minute but it's dropped now to 93%!!

I don't want to speak too soon, and I'm not sure about actual usage yet, but my standby issue seems vastly improved. Two nights ago I lost about 10% during 5 hours of standby. This morning after being fully charged at 1am, I'm still at 100% more than 6 hours later.

If you guys are having heavy drainage issues on standby, just turn EVERYTHING off. All I have running is cellular data. If that solves the problem, start turning things back on one by one and see what the culprit is. I have a feeling it has to do with the stuff running under Location Services > System Services as those were the last few things I switched off during troubleshooting. Thanks, redmamoth!

The only other thing I changed last night was let the battery go completely dead before recharging. Hope that helps.

turned off iCloud back up, compass calibration, location-based iAds, Traffic, and bluetooth. deleted and re-added exchange and gmail. charged phone to 100% from 10% yesterday around 7pm- 1am. took it off charger and went to bed. 12minutes usage 6hr 37minute standby. still at 100%! :)

Just a thought.....anyone using 3rd party chargers like a Bose station?

Been advised that can cause battery issues so I am now charging using the supplied charger.

Not pleased. I had to charge it twice yesterday to make it through the day. Took this near the end of the second charge.

Just wanted to give a different perspective, the first 2 nights I had the phone I had drained the battery to 0, did a full charge then disconnected the power. for both nights I only lost 2%. This was with all the goodies enabled.

Yesterday I did some sporadic charging throughout the day after a 3rd full discharge. I disabled all the goodies including cloud, iads, automatic time, many location services, weather and stock widgets, etc. and now im having the same standby drain as everyone else. Went from 56 to 36 overnight. Not as bad as some of you but certainly a change from 2%.

very strange

I just turned back on all the settings except cloud lets see if there's a difference.
