Continuously stressing the card with a game on really high settings is a concern of mine, too. Do you guys think that's an issue? How's the heat dissipation on the iMac? Obviously it's much quieter than a PC rig, so stressing + heat is where the actual concern is.

It also has a mobile card at 100W TDP and not a desktop card at 220W+ TDP, so the comparison isn't apples to apples. The iMac has a better cooling system than the many laptops that share the 780M (inc. those with SLI 780M's!).

(read: it's a non-issue)

To be honest I am quite happy with the gaming performance. Being able to play the MP part of games like Crysis 3 or Battlefield 4 with something around 60 fps at 1920x1080 and maxed out settings (except AA) is more than I expected from the iMac. The fact that the GPU can easily be overclocked (in my case 200/300 MHz Core/Memory) without raising the temperatures by a large margin also helps to bring the performance closer to a stock desktop GTX 680.

So with overclocking can BF4 *usually* avg. 60 FPS in multi @ 1440p, high settings, no aa?

I played BF3 a long time on 2560x1440, but scaled back to 1920x1080 to gain some more FPS and better performance in MP. In the end, it is all about FPS for good MP gameplay. In BF4 i run the game on medium and 1920x1080 and goed fine. I own a 2011 12,2 iMac with i5, SSD and a HD 6970M videocard.

With some luck, i go for the iMac 2013 and with that, i think i can go to high / ultra!

I don't think that BF4 multiplayer is playable at 2560x1440 with high settings. You can lower the quality settings to ramp up the fps but I can't see the benefit of it. I stick to my comment that BF4 and other games are perfectly fine at 1920x1080 with high or better graphic settings.

So I guess the big question is, which option is best:
1) 1080p high
2) 1440p medium

I've heard players say they prefer native res even at lower settings, but who knows. I was really hoping to get 60 FPS in 1440p with no aa and medium to high settings. :(

As requested the same test running 2560x1440 with High quality settings.

Mac:
- i7
- GTX780M (+200MHz Core, +300MHz Memory using MSI Afterburner)
- 32GB
- 1TB SSD
- Windows 8.1
- Nvidia 331.58

Battlefield 4 settings:
- 2560x1440
- Ambient Occlusion: SSAO
- AA: 2 x MSAA
- AA Post: High
- Rest: High

BF4 Maps / fps:
Parcel Storm (64/64 player):
Avg: 41fps, 44fps
1%: 32fps, 31fps
0.1%: 28fps, 25fps

turn off ambient occlusion, SSAO is the worst one to have as it increases the glare from the sun, having it off means no glare, having HBAO (obviously HBAO is the most performance intensive, but theres no much difference between having it off and hbao) means its super high quality so its effectively less, you'll get about 6-8fps more. You dont really need AA either that has a big performance effect. effects, mesh, texture/terrain quality are all the ones you should have highest so you can see enemies in the distance better, others are just eye candy and not needed ;)

Thought I would jump in here since I'm currently obsessed with BF4 (so says my GF.... WHAT DOES SHE KNOW?! Kidding...)

Anyway, here are my specs and my thoughts.

Late 2013 iMac 27"
i5-4570
16GB RAM
Geforce GT 755m

Someone said it right, in multiplayer - it's all about the FPS and having smooth consistent gameplay. I have to agree with this.

When I was younger, I would never settle for anything other than the maxed out settings, which always lead me to being disappointed because my hardware was never top of the line.

I cannot have that expectation with this computer, especially with a new game like BF4.

SO, to that, here's how I play BF4. It may not be everyone's preference, but I still find the game (even on these settings) really good looking and a hell of a lot of fun (and that's more important).

Settings: LOW
Resolution: 1280 * 720

That's right, that's how I play and I'm having a blast. The game averages just over 100FPS, and occasionally drops into the 60s (depending what kind of absurdities are going on in a 64 player game of Operation Locker).

What is the reason to have 100 fps if the display is 60hz? I go settings with i am in the 40-70 fps area

No reason at all, I just want to have the absolute best performance possible - at the lowest resolution tolerable! haha

As soon as I start tweaking settings, turning this up, this down, this on, this off, I end up getting over zealous and getting poor performance.

So to keep it simple, I throw it on the preset "LOW" mode, put it on a resolution I can just tolerate, and play!

720p on a 1440p display, on low settings, ROFLMAO... :D

Hopefully driver/game updates will improve performance some in the future.

I guess nobody has tested 780m OC'd at 1440p, high settings, *no aa* yet? I'll be using what ever the best settings are in native res for 60 FPS.

Sorry if that sounded rude. I didn't mean it to be. It was just after reading your experience with BF4, it made me realize I made the right choice with the 680m.

No offense taken whatsoever. The other dude where he "ROFLMAO" that I play at 720p was kind of a dick, but hey, that's cool - that's just how I play! And I end up doing quite well.

But yeah, a more powerful video card would be great - but I'll take what I've got it seems to do alright.

I really didn't mean anything by it. Plus now that I see you have the 755m it makes more sense. I would play at 1080p on your system with appropriate settings at 60 FPS, but to each his own. :)

When everyone gets their system, and if interested - we should all play together. It'd be a lot of fun!

Hey, as long as you're having fun, that's all that matters ultimately.

Definitely, mine should be coming in next week!

so 1440p+high settings, no AA, distance view 70 i get a min of 40 fps and max of 75fps in multplayer 32-40 players

What more do you want ? No benchmarks are run at 1440p; 1080p is the norm and the 780M is doing wonders.
