check out orb

the orb application allows one to add most any audio stream as a "custom channel", then connect to it from your iphone. You need to download and install orb on your local machine. Then find the audio stream url and cut n paste it into "internet radio" in orb.

Flip4iPhone would be good.

Although would be better if BBC started a Quicktime compatible service, then we could listen on iPhone and have a radio stream on iTunes.

Shouldn't have to, as long as you have it setup on your computer properly, you just connect to ooTunes from your iphone, so any internet connection (wifi, 3G or EDGE) should just work.

One question. It works brilliantly with my home WiFi connection and my iPhone 3G. Do I have to add anything or change anything, when I am out of range of a WiFi connection?

did you look at the settings for fly tunes? They have 24 bbc streams to choose from...

The BBC iPlayer for the iPhone is apparently available in a beta from, for UK residents. This should allow you to stream Radio and TV.

Not been able to check it myself, as i'm out in Sweden.

No, the current iPhone beta is TV only.

Radio (both live streaming and listen again, probably listen again first) are apparently coming for the iPhone "soon".

These may well be AAC format streams using the same browser checking that's done on the TV streaming files, to prevent people downloading the shows.

how to do it:

I got BBC to work by buying Tuner Internet Radio ($6) and then programming in my own stream. I think Tuner used to have BBC built in, but I couldn't find it.

In order to stream, make your own stream by going to the Search tab in Tuner, and selecting the "Open" button at the top.

The stream is through Vermont Public Radio (I couldn't find a mp3 stream directly, only WM or RM). There is a 10 second intro, telling you you're on VPR. After that, BBC streams. It seems to be a minute or two behind live, but it works.

Here's the url to enter: http://vprbbc.streamguys.net:80

Enjoy!

Hey, thanks for the tip, but that is for BBC World Service... The stream we're after is the elusive BBC Radio1 Live.

Thanks! That's what I've been looking for. :) That and streaming NPR will make the $6 worth it.

Forget Radio 1 what I want is Five Live and Five Live Sports Extra without any geographical IP restrictions on sports rights.

Thank you all, but still no Test Match Special

Firstly thank you to everyone for their interest and help.

Unfortunately I am only slightly nearer to what I really wanted. This was to listen to the BBC (Digital - DAB) Radio station Radio 5 live sports extra, whilst I was away from home.

I'm new to all this and can't really understand why but I think I can access it when I am in range of a WiFi connection, but EDGE and 3G are unable to cope with the signal. So I can receive it "at home" but when I'm there I can listen on my DAB radio. It's when I'm away that's the problem.

I'll stop ranting now as the Test Match is about to start!!!, but thank you all again.

Yes. Another vote here for Radio 4. Come on BBC - get an app on the store.

I'm not sure there would be any real need for an app. What would it add that couldn't be done on the site itself as the TV version already does

(actually, I suppose it could integrate some of the BBC Music data stuff and scrobbling, but that's way down the line anyway).

Anyway, the timescale is somewhat fixed. From the BBC's radio blogs we know that Cyclopia, the BBC's new audio servers are *not* running yet - despite the new version of iPlayer launching. Given the old servers are barely coping with iPlayer radio as is, they ain't going to be adding new encoding formats.

We also know from the same blogs that there's a code freeze during the Olympics, so Cyclopia won't go live for a month. And then they can start looking at the iPhone version.

So I imagine the iPhone compatible streams will hit in October.
