You should have said "Sorry, no deal" and let him walk away and drive an hour back to his house phoneless! And always MEET IN PUBLIC! It's safer that way.

Exactly. Especially if you have an overinflated idea of the item's value.

Anyone who doesn't expect to get lowballers on craigslist is either new to the concept of selling stuff through the classifieds or is is naive. I think it's unethical to agree to a price on email/phone and then lowball in person if the item matches the pics/description. But people will do it. They've been doing it for as long as there have been classified ads.

When I buy stuff on craigslist some would say I am a lowballer. *shrug* so what? If they don't want my price they're welcome to wait for someone happy with theirs. I also stick to the price agreed upon via email and don't try to renegotiate once we met in person unless the item isn't in the condition it was claimed to be in.

Well, you should lowball when you're emailing/texting/talking over the phone with the seller. Why pay more than you have to pay?

I mean, no need to be ridiculous, but if the seller is willing to give you a deal, why not? It's free enterprise.

I do agree with your policy of sticking to the price that was set (unless the item isn't as advertised, of course).

I had a guy try to lowball me on my 3G when I sold it. I told him I'd throw in the case, but I wasn't dropping the price.

He took it. I didn't like that case anyway.

;)

I sold my 32GB 3GS for $400 - $20 less then I had it listed va CL last week. Sometimes you have to stand your ground.

There is really nobody else at fault here but you OP. You are the one that agreed to sell it to him for that ridiculous price.

Consider it a lesson learned though. Don't let folks walk over you. If you agree on a price stick to it all the way through. If a guy tries to switch it up at the last minute then it is up to you to not let yourself get stepped on.

I agree. I don't care how far the guy drove to meet me...or how important it is to him..I decide the price and whether I will accept any lower offers.

Yeah, ill stop bumping my thread up and just let it get lost in the wasteland
Next time i will have more communication, a firm price and not do it out of my house.
The Guy just freaking called me and said he was coming after not contacting me for like 3 days.
Peace guys, thanks for making me feel both better and worse about my failure on craigslist

next time you sell something on craigslist, PM me first so I can lowball the **** out of you and get away with it

OH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another thing... you may not always walk out of every negotiation with exactly what you wanted. If you got 50 bucks or so less than you wanted to get, ask yourself... was it worth the hassle of dealing with more potential buyers to get 50 more bucks?

Agreed. But this should have been handled before they met to do business. As I understand the OP, they agreed to a price online, and when the buyer showed up he offered less. For me, I would have stuck to what was negotiated online and would have not sold it for a lower price.
