It's the rumor that undoubtedly won't die until it comes true, but the BBC takes another look at the prospect of The Beatles coming to Apple's iTunes Store, a topic that has been raised on a regular basis going back to the launch of the iTunes Music Store. According to Paul McCartney, the continued holdup is due to record label EMI.
"To tell you the truth I don't actually understand how it's got so crazy," Sir Paul told Newsbeat. "I know iTunes would like to do it, so one day it's going to happen."

Sir Paul has claimed the delay is down to record company EMI.

"It's been business hassles", he said. "Not with us, or iTunes. It's the people in the middle, the record label. There have been all sorts of reasons why they don't want to do it."
For its part, EMI has continued to remain essentially quiet on the subject, again sharing its oft-repeated claim that "discussions are ongoing" and noting that it would "love to see The Beatles' music available for sale digitally.

Considering their status as one of the biggest selling, if not the biggest selling, music acts in history, The Beatles have been one of the highest-profile omissions from the iTunes Store since its inception.

Torrents solve the problem

EMI are idiots.
Instead of selling Beatles tunes and making money, they merely encourage people to seek out a torrent.

In other news, the pope is apparently still Catholic.

This issue has got to a laughable stage; a few years ago, there were a few holdouts against iTunes, but now pretty much anyone that's anyone is on board. Except EMI with the Beatles. And my mate Dave.

Of course, I reckon for some users it's irrelevant, as they've either pirated the tracks by now or have the CDs. It's just hurting a large-ish middle band of people who use iTunes store as the music world.

Another shining example of the music industry's byzantine approach to the digital era.

I just bought the Digital Remastered CDs last year and ripped them onto iTunes. I have no need for it anymore. I really can't imagine somebody still waiting for this to happen. Let's be honest. It's more of a statement than an offering.

If you like the Beatles, chances are, you already have plenty of recordings.

The way I have always seen it is, if I can't find the CD online or it isn't on iTunes, I can acquire it by any means necessary. 😀

It's been 40 YEARS since the last Beatles original release album. You would think that most people who wanted to buy them by now actually have what they wanted or just go out and buy the readily available CD's. It's not like they made THAT many albums.

I don't see how the Beatles coming to iTunes makes much difference.

I'm really looking forward to Beatles being on digital media. I want to be able to cherry pick music and not have to buy complete albums.

Back 2 or 3 years ago, I would have thought that by today, Beatles would be on iTunes.

Beatles music is still far superior to a lot of today's music. A lot of modern music is just so lame and boring, showing no talent whatsoever.

Zzzzzz. Seriously, are we still talking about the Beatles on iTunes? Don't we all already have all the Beatles from CD?

Is the digital music world still counting on an approving nod from the Beatles before it can become truly relevant and legitimate? Lame. At this point, digital music retailers should refuse to sell anything from the Beatles (if ever offered) on principle.

EMI-Wake up and smell the music!

what a bunch of fools, I for one will boycott any EMI property until the Beatles come to iTunes. Imagine the profit potential for EMI when the Fab Four are available on iTunes...😱 Those of you who believe the market is not there for iTunes/Beatles are the same people who saw little potential for the iPad...

Who cares?

I have all of the Beatles CDs that I need for the past ... oh, ever since they came out on CDs. And of course, I have them in my iTunes library, and so has everybody else who likes to listen to them (I have to admit, I hardly do, these days).
So who cares?
I talked to my kids yesterday, and they have no clue as to who the Beatles are. They listen to "their music" as they put it, and that's more like "T-Pain" and "Usher".
😛

I've been waiting for this for a while, my beatles songs are scattered on CD and missing somewhere. Time for a digital collection, come on EMI!

"Hello!" It is the newest business model; lots and lots of demand. Nah we don't wanna do it because we hate money.

Torrent? Why would you have to go to that trouble? All you need is access to your parents/aunts/uncles/neighbors CD collection. Someone you know has got to have a Beatles CD or two. It's inevitable. It's like Kevin Bacon.

I did the same. So EMI have not lost out from me, but other may not have been so honest!

It is basically just greed on the part of EMI, nothing else.

Apple needs to sell music encoded at applelossless quality. The Beatles, I was 10 years old when they made it big. They are old enough to be the grandparents of the kids today who are buying most of the music. Their stuff is good but very dated.

Irrelevant.

Sure, there will be some newspaper/TV news announcements, a brief flash of downloads, but in the end - once the 'excitement' has settled - I don't see massive sales of this material anymore.

Honestly, I think The Beatles/EMI have missed the big payout they were likely hoping for.

There is of course the argument that there is no need for Beatles on iTunes because everyone who wants the music already has the Beatles on CD. But then why do we have Beatles on CD, because by the same argument, everyone who wants the music already has the Beatles on CD.

History has shown that regardless the popularity of a given artist, the availability of their music at the iTunes Store increases sales.

Do you remember the week at Michael Jackson's death? All of the top ten songs were his and I believe most of the top ten albums as well.

EMI is stupid for not releasing the Beatles discography to the iTunes Store.

Who are the Beatles? j/k 🙂

EMI is a day late and a dollar short. Like most of said, anyone that is a fan already has the cd's, vinyl or ripped their own. Never heard of a company that didn't want to make money.
