every five seconds they keep yelling that beats is "always on" "live 24/7" as if other radio stations aren't on 24/7.... Its not a unique selling point!
Yes, it is a unique selling point. Most radio stations now ARE NOT 24/7, live or not. So Beats1, like all such stations, are a rarity. And it's very possible that in some of the 100 countries they're broadcasting to, they're more than that. They could be the only radio station doing it.

So, why not present it as a selling point?

Besides, radio stations traditionally have a phase for themselves; and in the past it often included something like "coming to you live from..." I take this as their phrase. You don't have to like it, or like them repeating it (though listening to the station right now, I haven't heard it much at all), but it is most certainly a selling point.

I'm from Australia - and I guess I forgot the situation, particularly in the USA is quite different - we don't really have many pre programed stations (well they are the same 50 tracks on loop, but its different, there is a lot more "live")

I noticed they have stopped saying it as much now, was just the first couple of days. But it is quite confusing as to what is "live" and what is repeated shows. It's probably just the culture shock because I stopped really listening to radio 10 years ago.. All the station IDs and stuff.. I guess its radio tradition.. Anyway guess I just didn't understand.

Lots of R&B, Hip Hop and Pop on this station, but they do mix in a little other stuff. The name of the station is Beats1 so naturally they are going to play a lot of stuff that sounds best on Beats headphones. Those products were designed with a total focus on heavy and overdriven bass response, but now since Apple has purchased them more people are saying they are audiophile quality. I don't know. I don't own any because they don't do well with the music I listen to.

Anyhow they are using this station to market music, products, brands, artists so making one station do all of that is hard.

Hmm just did check BBC radio - Well that explains a lot - BBC1 sound just like Beats1, but BBC2 is kinda nice.

That you don't know Beck... Seriously! Means your way way out of the loop musically. He's been around in indie music for 20 years! I've been listening to alternative/indie/non commercial music for 35 years so I've been around the block.

Well can't stand alternative. To often that's just an excuse for bad playing and/or singing.

Following the launch of Apple Music alongside iOS 8.4, Apple's Beats 1 radio station led by Zane Lowe has begun broadcasting. Available in more than 100 countries, Beats 1 is a 24/7 radio station that will play music around the clock with live DJs and guests.

The inaugural song played on Beats 1 radio right when it kicked off at 9:00 a.m. was Spring King's "City," which was followed by Beck's "Dreams" and Jamie xx's "In Color." Spring King was picked by Lowe as a great upcoming band from Manchester. In a move that might be somewhat controversial, Apple has decided to censor explicit content on the Beats 1 radio station, something listeners experienced when a song from Dr. Dre's Chronic album was played.

Beats 1 features several shows by various on-air personalities, and a full lineup of what's going to be on can be found at the Beats 1 website, which forwards to Apple's new Tumblr page for Apple Music and Beats 1. The Tumblr page has a complete schedule that displays what's playing, and it adjusts to your time zone based on location.

Beats 1 will include exclusive interviews and news broadcasts, with the first interview taking place tomorrow with Eminem. According to Zane Lowe, today's focus is on the music, and several exclusive songs will be played over the course of the day.

Apple Music is available now and is free for all listeners for the first three months. Following the trial period, the service will cost $9.99 per month for individuals or $14.99 for families of up to 6.

Update: Apple has confirmed that it is censoring explicit content on its Beats 1 radio station.

Update 5:35 PM: It appears the Beats 1 radio station is currently experiencing an outage and is unavailable for some listeners. Attempting to play the station results in an unknown error.

Update 6:13 PM: Beats 1 is back up.

Why does Apple cram Beats Radio down our throats? It takes up 2/3s of the radio screen on the iphone. What if we don't like Beats Radio? With the old Apple radio on the iPhone I could have my favorite radio stations at the top. I guess Apple knows what I like better than I do.

I don't know, maybe because it's the biggest part of Apple Music and they want to give it sufficient promotion space?

If you don't like it, simple, scroll up.

It seems Apple have made a update to the Music app with no-one else knowing.

The Music app on iOS 9 beta had several UI issues. Alignment issues, black text on dark backgrounds, the Beats 1 playlists were displayed in an odd fashion.

Now, although I don't think it's perfect (up to iOS 8.4 standards), it's much better. Take a look.
