Well sorry for me expecting a station targeted at the world would be more international then mostly us stuff.

You apparently aren't listening to the same Beats 1 radio we all are. I've heard quite a few bands from across the world yesterday and today. Zane played a band from France "that's lighting it up in France currently". Listen to Julie Adenuga later on as she broadcasts from the UK and played quite a bit of UK / European music yesterday.

She did? I apparently have another Beats 1... European music in not RnB...

Well, I didn't listen to her whole show but I remember a few times she mentioned where the band was from and it wasn't from the US. But at the end of the day, this station isn't going to appeal to every person on the globe. I haven't liked every song I have heard but it has allowed me to discover bands/artists that I liked and have never heard of before. Also, Zane's interview with Eminem is something I'm not interested in. So I listen to something else while the interview is on, and then switch back every now and then to hear the music Zane is playing. Some I love, some I don't like. But overall, it's been quite the suprise station for me. I wasn't expecting to tune into it as much as I have.

hopefully you'll find a DJ or time slot that plays the music you like. If not, Apple Music has a vast catalog for you to listen to!

The thing is I have listened now around 6hours to Beats 1 and I haven't had one song I liked. That quota is even higher when I tune in to the bad german folk pop as played in Musikantenstadl. Pure statistics say I should have had at least some song I like.

Btw you can search for the DJs to listen to the playlists they played today. Just type Zane in

Good that they are doing that, but I think they could go a step further and build DJ sections in the app where you can listen again to the whole shows, find out about upcoming stuff etc.
Yeah, I was very disappointed this morning. A 24/7 world-wide radio with the three crown pieces on repeat? I hope that this is only temporary, otherwise there isn't much of a point in listening to Beats 1 in the evening and morning.

Its probably a reasonable compromise given that its broadcasting live around the world though. If I'm listening to Zane between 5pm and 7pm local time, I'm probably not too worried about it being repeated at 5am to 7am local time where I am, but a better time for a lot of people in other parts of the world.

The first 10 songs played by Zane on the station:

  • Spring King - City
  • Beck - Dreams
  • Jamie XX - Gosh
  • Skepta - Shutdown
  • AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)
  • Hudson Mohawke - Warriors
  • Pharrell Williams - Freedom
  • Courtney Barnett - Dead Fox
  • The Chemical Brothers - Under Neon Lights
  • Shamir - On The Regular
"targeted at black americans"? really? maybe try a few more different shows before leaping to such wildly inaccurate conclusions...

Not just that -targeted at black Americans who love garbage pop music.

By people who obviously haven't listened, but are on hear whinging.

Odd, isn't it?

For people who are liking it, especially Zane's show, worth checking out Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 if you have access to it - think it might be on Sirius in the US. She took over Zane's slot in the UK, and its pretty similar.

interesting. I guess it's a good thing that the Apple Music (or Spotify if that's better for your tastes) have a broad catalog to listen to.

I think I understand the format now. The three main DJ's have TWO stints per day. (All times in BST and 24-hour format as I live in the UK.) For Zane his first show of the day is 1700, for Julie, it's 2000 and for Ebro it's 2300. All these shows are live but the second stints (0500, 0800 and 1100 for Zane, Julie and Ebro respectively) are not live, hence why we are hearing repeats at time.

I understand why they are doing this, because in some countries when Zane's first stint is broadcast, it might be like 0300 or 0400 in the morning. Same for the other DJ's too.

I think that's right!
This is correct. Main shows are run live and then re-run later for the benefit of people listening in different timezones.

It was good for me because I caught up with Zane's opening show and the UK DJ (Julie?) show that I missed. I thought I'd turn it off when I heard the Ebro show again, but ended up listening through it a second time.

His back to back Otis and Otis Redding plays was what first sold me on B1. The second was the station-breaking four playthroughs of the Buffy theme song (no Fs given!). The third was St. Vincent dedicating Enjoy the Silence to an 11 year old with the coolest taste in music, then playing the full 12" version of Blue Monday that runs for 7 and a half minute. The fourth was Zane playing Calyx and Teebee in the opening show.

A worldwide always on station that needs to cater to every type of listener regardless of hour listening could easily have been the blandest, most lowest common denominator radio station there is. Instead we get Beats1, with an amazing mix of classic and modern tunes*, and eclectic stuff no mainstream station would ever play.

For me, who gave up on radio years ago, it's a revelation. I already purchased a full album that I discovered on it (Leon Bridges), and I have several more tracks on my wish list. I'll be tuning (no Zane, stop trying to make "tapping" happen) in often.

*For Australians: It's the perfect mix of Triple and Double J programming.

Got to completely agree, as a listener of Zane Lowe's previous slot on Radio 1 this feels like is far more unleashed than other stations even the BBC. Feel like it has reinvigorated my passion for new music.

I feel the same way you do. The last time I listened to radio regularly was when I lived in LA - Garth Trinidad on KCRW is brilliant if you want to check out his radio shows on the KCRW website.

Though I was introduced to Leon Bridges by a friend earlier, his music is beautiful and I'm so happy more people are discovering it. That's exactly what Beats1 is for. To spread the love of music. Julie played a Brazilian tune yesterday by Mele and it's not been released yet but I pre-ordered it. I can't wait!

So far I had been rather disappointed by Beats 1 (pop and rap is just not my thing). But currently I'm listening to Josh Homme's "alligator hour", and it's great! Cramps, Tame Impala, Misfits ... one good song after the other. I think it's probably worth checking out the artist-run shows rather than the DJs if you want to hear something more than mainstream pop.

Yes, actually. It's 2015. I can discover music, television, and news on my own. Who the hell watches news/TV anymore? Listening to the radio? Farkin' hell. Makes me laugh that some of you are saying I'M the one stuck in the past. I listen to a lot of modern music. I can find it myself, because I'm not retarded. This whole B1 thing is not for me, obviously.
Good on you, I guess, but seems like an inefficient use of time doing all the discovering yourself. KEXP is a wonderful resource.

Absolutely love the Zane Lowe show. How boringly easy would it have been to play mostly chart hits and a few offbeat songs and leave it at that. Instead, what they are doing is playing what to me is fresh new music where I can't help pressing Add to Playlist to music I just would not have had the opportunity of finding out. Personally, I think it's that aspect which will keep people subscribing.

I'd love to know, since the launch of Apple Music, how many subscribers Spotify have lost. Obviously they aren't going to release the figures but it'd be very interesting to know.

And giving up on Beats 1 - I despise the DJs and thr music selection. Apparrntly ig is targetet at black americans - Nothing international in it...
What constitutes being targeted at black Americans? You do realize that white Americans consume more of the hip-hop/rap and pop music than black Americans do?

I was listening this morning and heard several songs in different languages. I was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting it to take a week or longer before the station got more international. But it seems, on Day 3 now, that they're finding their rhythm and mixing it up. It's still English-Language dominated, but I think by month's end we'll see the real shape of this radio station and I think it could be really exciting and far more global than Day 1 might have suggested.

That sounds like a positive development, now the DJs just have to shut up ;) Wonder why there are no DJ shootings when this behaviour is the norm in us/uk radios.

yea lol Beck and Spring King is straight from the streets of New York....

Does one have to know both? I sure never heard of them.

For Spring King is nothing findable in the net and Beck appears to be an us artist.

Spring King are an up and coming band from Manchester, here in the UK. Zane played their song as the first song when Beats1 launched. Not "black American" targeted music.... Zane's show is about playing an eclectic range of music, from various artists and he's big on bringing new music to the people.

Also, Beck, American yes, not targeted at black Americans either.

Listening now to a singer from Greenland :) And I don't mind the chatty DJ's. I understand that you might wish they'd be more circumspect about when they start talking toward the end of a song (or beginning), but there are plenty of radio stations without DJ's just music; this one has the DJ's...I want them to talk, even over the tail end of the music. They give the station an energy that isn't there if it's just music. At least, for me.
