Wait, so is Beats 1 24/7 or 12/7 with the other 12 hours on repeat?

I'm starting to hear others say this now and this tweet three hours ago fueled it:

Yeah, I was very disappointed this morning. A 24/7 world-wide radio with the three crown pieces on repeat? I hope that this is only temporary, otherwise there isn't much of a point in listening to Beats 1 in the evening and morning.

I started looking around when I recognized a song from Julie's show. :(

Many will be disappointed by this especially since Apple advertised it as "Live" 24/7. Actually pushed it more than even many other radio stations do, even if they are live as well. It's odd also because they have DJ's from multiple time zones. It all seemed to be set up to actually be live 24/7.

And now too. With this DJ, he's played the same two songs. His playlist is now visible and its the same two songs as his last stint.

Has Apple actually ever claimed that it's a live radio? Their promo website avoids the term "live" completely. As long as music is broadcast 24/7 and available worldwide, they fulfil their promise.

I suppose it does make sense. Very few users will actually be able to listen to every session, given that they're spread out over 8 hours. Double that amount would be too much. Some users will always miss out due to sleeping hours, among other things. The DJs themselves need to sleep too of course. By repeating the sessions, the other side of the globe has the same experience. But that is of course the drawback of a worldwide radio.

I'm yet to hear any DJ, or any calls, competitions, comedy sections.

It's basically 24/7 playlist. Think I'll stick to BBC Radio 2 and 1.

Zane stated yesterday that the first 24 hours would basically be music only. Other content begins afterwards. For instance they've been talking about an exclusive interview with Eminem coming on sometime today.

On the apple when on beats 1, it has a small text that reads "live". I don't know about you but that sort of tells me it's live, otherwise they have spread false information. I'm not really bothered either way to be honest.

I'm pretty sure that is to indicate that it is a "live" stream as opposed to a "playlist" stream so there is no track skipping etc available rather than the content being streamed is being performed "live".

The 12(?) hour repeat makes sense to me - if not for that then there would be a lot of shows which people could never hear due to them being "live" at unsociable times in the listeners local timezone... it's one of the consequences of broadcasting worldwide without timeshifting the stream.

The radio is pretty nasty.
All they're blasting is American gangster rapper African American music from the hood about hoes, niggaz, cars and guns.

You can't listen to that crap.
Right now they're playing "music" from this gun loving fine young gentleman:

I actually like rap music and it's sad to see beats one has screwed the songs by removing the lyrics that where intended to be in the songs.

There's been DJ's talking often. There is a request show. There's a mix of shows coming, if you look at the upcoming schedule.

Live, as in broadcasting. There's a difference.

Yea I dunno, what did you expect with three DJs all based in the US? People gotta sleep sometime!

I never expected they meant literally live content 24/7. It just seems like a good idea to replay important content like the interviews or the mixtape delivery services (which I missed last night so I'm actually hoping they do replay it). But it's being broadcast and curated live 24/7. I can see why people would be confused. Wouldn't be surprised if Apple removes the "Live" part before too long.

I suppose it's too early to tell but I'm wondering if the plan is to expand this into other stations. It'd be nice to have a station that's more indie-focused stuff, for instance. I do actually really enjoy Beats1, considering it's a for-everyone type of station. Certainly better than any other mainstream station I've heard.

I...um...I...I don't understand.
Do you also hate traditional radio? Television stations? Flipboard?

Yes, actually. It's 2015. I can discover music, television, and news on my own. Who the hell watches news/TV anymore? Listening to the radio? Farkin' hell. Makes me laugh that some of you are saying I'M the one stuck in the past. I listen to a lot of modern music. I can find it myself, because I'm not retarded. This whole B1 thing is not for me, obviously.

I think I understand the format now. The three main DJ's have TWO stints per day. (All times in BST and 24-hour format as I live in the UK.) For Zane his first show of the day is 1700, for Julie, it's 2000 and for Ebro it's 2300. All these shows are live but the second stints (0500, 0800 and 1100 for Zane, Julie and Ebro respectively) are not live, hence why we are hearing repeats at time.

I understand why they are doing this, because in some countries when Zane's first stint is broadcast, it might be like 0300 or 0400 in the morning. Same for the other DJ's too.

I think that's right!

And giving up on Beats 1 - I despise the DJs and thr music selection. Apparrntly ig is targetet at black americans - Nothing international in it...

The first 10 songs played by Zane on the station:

  • Spring King - City
  • Beck - Dreams
  • Jamie XX - Gosh
  • Skepta - Shutdown
  • AC/DC - For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)
  • Hudson Mohawke - Warriors
  • Pharrell Williams - Freedom
  • Courtney Barnett - Dead Fox
  • The Chemical Brothers - Under Neon Lights
  • Shamir - On The Regular
"targeted at black americans"? really? maybe try a few more different shows before leaping to such wildly inaccurate conclusions...

I am disgusted at the amount of racism in the tones of people on this board. Just...wow. So much ignorance.

FWIW, Kendrick Lamar speaks out against police brutality, particularly against young black youth who continue to die at the hands of police. So before you go on taking a gif out of context from some video, perhaps understand what he's actually about.

Zane is from New Zealand, became famous at Radio 1 in the UK. But he lives in LA now. But he's not American.
Julie Adenuga is British and is based in the UK.
Ebro is definitely a NYC DJ. He certainly played more than hip-hop yesterday. But he's black, speaks slang so it must just be all gangster rap, right?

But hey, it's cool. Don't like it? Don't listen to it. Just stop spreading hate because you are out of touch and hate people of different backgrounds.

Well said. I think he's just bitter as they don't seem to play any jpop or euro dance...
