Are overpriced bad quality headphones used by "cool" people really worth $2.5 billion to Apple? This just further proves that Apple is dangerously close to becoming nothing but a fashion symbol.

Exactly - look at the troubled history of Beats. And particularly how Dre and Lovine manoeuvred this company away from Monster and stealing the original designs which were all created by Monster. Its a sad case of Dre and Lovine as purely Money makers and they will be laughing all the way to the Bank. Meanwhile in 5 or 10 years time this will add very little to Apple in terms of capability or branding.

His name is Iovine, not Lovine. Troubled history? Monster was granted the rights to manufacture and develop the first generation of Beats Headphones. After the 5 year contract expired, Beats Electronics moved on from them. They didn't maneuver... they simply didn't renew a contract.

Incoming comments saying "you're a racist if you say anything about Beats".

To be fair people were accusing Dre of being a murderer and thug based on what he said in his music or that they just don't like him.

Couldn't Apple just buy the Beats Music sector? That's what Google did with Motorola.

The real point of the acquisition was to get Dre/Iovine on staff as liaisons. Beats as a whole was a sign on bonus which also happens to be a decent acquisition

Ask any audiophile, beats earphones would probably be the last thing he/she recommends. Many of them hold the opinion that beats earphones are 45% Design 45% Hype and only 10% sound quality

Is there a directory of audiophiles I could consult? If so, are the listed audiophiles certified? And would you provide a link to that survey you mention-- those numbers are mighty specific. Thanks!

Also, could you link me to any other people you know who blow smoke out of their nether parts?

Please, don't upset the narrative!

Yes. Looks like Apple's getting caught up with marketing this time. Truth is, Beats Music was a bit late to the game and probably wanted to rest on the laurels of the celebrities endorsing it (much like their headphones). What I would like to know is if Trent Reznor is now an Apple employee.

It sounds like Apple will operate Beats as a simple subsidiary--meaning it will own the company and reap it's profits--but current Beats employees will remain as employees of Beats Electronics. This seems like the simplest way to do things.

Beats Electronics isn't a little mom and pop company. They sell billions of dollars in products. You can't just flip a switch and integrate all of that together with another large operation.

While I think they'll maintain their separate structures, it sounds clear that Apple will be calling the shots at Beats and the two organizations will be sharing and integrating ideas and products.

Is Reznor an Apple employee now? Probably not on paper, but he's barely a Beats employee either. Chief Creative Officer is kind of an imaginary job that exists to link famous or influential people to a brand.

I could be wrong about all of this, but it seems logical.

These prices are based on individual valuations not on what Apple 'wanted'. Beats Electronics is far more valuable than Beats Music.

Glad someone else understands how that works. Beats hardware has been around for a while and brings in a TON of revenue. The NBA season is older than Beats Music and it may not even be profitable yet.

Blah blah blah people on here don't like Beats headphones. Whatevs. Plenty of people do. I've heard plenty of complaints about Apple's EarPods despite the fact that they sound great to me. Apple is obviously going to work to make them better and probably more affordable.

Okay the deal does make sense to me but the numbers breakdown makes no sense whatsoever. Apple paying $500 mil for beats music is a good deal; $2.5 bil for beats electronics is ridiculous. They are paying 2.5 bil for speakers… and they are going to end up redesigning said speakers in-house anyway since beats will have to drop the current designer.

2.5 bil for beats music maybe, for beats electronics makes no sense.

The Beats headphones is the cash cow, though. It earned a billion dollars last year. Beats Music is nowhere near profitable.

Yes, so renowned for having poor sound quality that they sell billions of dollars worth of headphones.

If quantity is indicative of quality then McDonald's must have 5-star quality hamburgers!

Apple CEO Tim Cook has called Iovine and Dre's talent and skills "really unique" and "very hard to find."

Didn't he say something similar about that idiot from Dixons he hired to become retail chief before swiftly firing him?

The success of Beats has more to do with their marketing than the product. Dre and Iovine just followed the SE Asian method of marketing (getting celebrities to sell their product).

I dont support any streaming services. When I pay for music I want something tangible in return, and will not accept any draconian DRM / proprietary software / restrictions at all. I will even work around the restrictions if need be.

Don't see why people are complaining so much. Apple earphones aren't very good at present. Beats are cool, particularly amongst the younger generation and will boost sales from this user group, who are probably swinging towards Android right now. iPhone powered by Beats audio technology + free pair of Beats headphones included = premium and differentiated offering.

:apple:

Almost every Beats headphone review (by professional reviewers) you can read complains about poor and at least too bass oriented sound quality and usually mentions that with same price you can buy much better headphones from another manufacturers.

I totally understand why Dr. Dre likes to have more bass in his Hip Hop Beats, but if Apple's mission is still to make the best quality products in the market there have to be a lot of changes coming.

Uh Beats makes over a billion a year. In 3 years this will be paid off. Apple will improve their deals with labels and aaplle will be able to possibly merge it with iRadio.

Cos they are ***** , Apple are supposed to do quality products! a sheer waste of money..conned by a record company exec simple as that.

Owww bless you think people buy Beats cause of their sound quality !!!!!

Image is everything !!!!

----------

And considering the sound quality and fit of Apple's earbuds being thirty times worse than Beats; I see only room for improvement.

30 times ???? I don't think it was the Beats you were comparing the earbuds to.

Cause the earbuds are not too far behind the Beats in ears, maybe 2x better.... The only improvement I see , the earbuds get a b on them ;)

Awful maths.

If in fact Beats sales are one billion a year, the profit will be around 15-20%

No idiot sells a company for 3 billion that is pulling in 1 billion profit each year.

Experience it yourself.

Head over to http://www.head-fi.org and start a post how you think Beats are awesome, you can collate your own results from there onwards, maybe learn a few basics about music and headphones ;)

They will also give you a list of alternatives to Beats.

Wait for it ...

Samsung now buys a headphone company and streaming service!

Any moment now!

Unless they buy skull candy, they can only do better......

Too bad, streaming seems way more interesting.

Guys you dont seem to understand how this works...

Just because Apple paid more for the part of the business that is worth more and has far more revenue doesn't mean streaming is any less of the focus of the acquisition!?
