Not many good pair of headphones for $20. I hear that Sennheiser's HD 485s and JVC Flats are pretty good for the price range, but I don't think they can really compare with the Beats by Dre set (I don't think you need to spend $300 for a good set either. I'm really happy with my Sennheiser PX 210 BT that I got for less than half that)

I mostly agree with this, but it depends on what you're willing to accept as a "good" pair of headphones. There are a lot of people who would be satisfied with $20 headphones.

Personally, I think the vast majority of people out there would be satisfied with the ATH-M30s or the Samson SR850s which are still pretty cheap (unless you're a bass head), they just don't know they exist and instead go to Bose/Beats...

I love using my Audio Technica. When I worked at BBY forever ago, the Beasts just didn't compare at any level, but people seemed to still flock to them despite my advice.
Good marketing... that is all. And people seem to wear them as a fashion statement more than anything.

You mean Beats aren't really made by Dr Dre? My heart is broken :(

Just kidding. I don't even know or care who Dr Dre is. All I know is that I'm not going to pay $200-$400 for headphones ever. Think of what else you could buy for $200... including 10 pairs of good headphones.

I was going to post, but I see you've already done it for me. Thank you!
Neither of you are audiophiles, apparently.

Um... no.

Yes, thank you. lol

You didn't put the appropriate emoticon. How am I supposed to read sarcasm without the appropriate emoticon?

My bad, by the way. I misread your fashion statement thinking you were talking about the Audio Techinca's.

It didn't need an emoticon.

My bad, by the way.
It's all gravy.

No, the ATechs are definitely a better choice than Beats (I don't really consider Beats a choice, though... I'd rather stuff shards of metal in my ears). :)

Confused about what?

I believe (s)he is confused because your first comment indicates that you think Apple and Beats are both over priced electronics implying that you are not in favor of the brand; yet your signature clearly shows that you own a lot of "over priced electronics"

-I could be wrong, but that's how I see it.

The question is, can you still call it a fashion statement, when seemingly everyone under the sun owns a pair of these?!

P.S. I don't know if anyone else noticed this phenomenon, but before beats came out, a lot of the people who have now bought them would call you crazy for buying anything but the cheapest supermarket brand earphones... So it seems they really don't care about quality.

You have not been hanging out with high school age kids much. If you were then you'd know two things (1) they absolutely do NOT care about audio quality. Today the "music" industry is not about music. It is about performance and "looks" and video. (2) They care a LOT about what their peers think about them and do NOT want to be "different" so they buy whatever brand is in style, even if they know for certain something else exists and is better.

What happens is that your (and mine too) priorities are different. I don't give a hoot if my buddies see me with 25 year old AGK headphones and I care about the sound but I'm not 14 years old either.

To all the people hating on Beats, yes they aren't worth it compared to other brands we are familiar with, but they do provide strong and solid low frequency (which is what the kids want) and at least he is actually getting millions of young people to even care about the quality of their headphones at all. This can only have a positive effect in the long run, as it creates millions of discerning customers (even if, for the price, Beats arent' all that discerning). Plus beats look cool, which is more than I can say for my collection of goofy looking cans.

You do have a point, but they're the "in" thing right now. :\

I actually don't mind Beats headphones. They may not sound the best but they look damn good.
And there it is... :\

Yes. I've actually asked that question. They don't give a hoot about sound quality and will tell you that straight up.

I asked on young female One Direction fan about the sound. Questions like "Who wrote that?" and "None of those guys play instruments so where is the music coming from?" "every video I see of them is lip sync'd". The fans know all this and don't care, they

One Direction... a prime example of quality music.

When did I mention a single thing about high school students?

There are the $30 Panasonic RP-HTF600-S, not $20 but still quite cheap. And the $15 Koss KSC75 apparently come close in sound quality.

Anyone looking for headphones should check out this massive review. Search for "(S1) Summary (The short version)" on the page for an overview table.
Thanks for that link, I wish I'd known about it when I was looking for new headphones. Sad to see that the PX 210 is not mentioned though, as it's one of the best price/performance headphones that's both collapsible and support apt-X Bluetooth audio.

Yeah it's quite sad, some of my friends a few years ago (and probably still some now) didn't even realise you could get better/worse sounding headphones. All they saw(see) was the the looks and the price, now it seems they don't even discriminate based on price! I'm 19 btw to give some age context.

Edit: To add a little anecdote, a friend of mine asked me to suggest some decent mid range cans and I rattled off a few names, she then said 'what about beats?' And I told her what I thought of them. She replied with 'but my laptop has beats audio and it sounds amazing' and proceeded to pull out some hp netbook type thing and play some of the worst sounding audio I've ever heard :p I told her to save her money and buy some cheapo headphones from Primark or somewhere, at least then she'd stand out a bit :p

I rarely buy music these days as there are numerous free alternatives. I've tried several sub based music plans and have always found them lacking due to content. But I am definitely interested in this if I have access to Apple's iTune catalog. I wouldn't have a problem paying $15/mo.

Here we go again another subscription service, expecting me to pay to support the current corrupt industry. No thanks, Ill stick to obtaining my music via non financial means, and no DRM.
