It sounds like you're privy to exactly what Apple has planned with this acquisition? Or the logistics behind it? If you are, please tell us instead of beating about the bush.

If you're not then youre just assuming stuff. And yes Apple could design something without spending 3BN. They could also acquire an already established something that makes billions. They did the latter.

lol if you think Beats makes billions in revenue.

No I don't, they're not a public company.

I'm not doubting they make money (I'm just guessing it's not in the billions). But the majority of their money is made off headphones and Apple would be buying them at the height of their popularity. Seems to me the chances of them going out of fashion are just as great as them becoming more popular. But perhaps Apple is planning to incorporate them into a big line of wearables and it's going to morph way beyond headphones. I just hope if Apple continues to produce them they improve the sound and build quality. I had two paris of Beats/Monster headphones and they has to be returned because the cables frayed. After the second time I just bought something else which was cheaper and sounds better.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. Apple was lost in the weeds and near death. Several failed attempts at a next gen OS and completely lost product wise. Its computers were a confused mess of outdated beige with an antiquated OS. There was no iPod yet, no iMac yet, no iTunes yet. OSX really was the beginning of the turnaround.

??

Next was the best thing to happen to Apple. The company (Apple) was sinking at that time. Without Steve and his OS I doubt there would be an Apple Inc. today.

Like I said I'm not sure why Apple in 2014 wants to be in the headphone business. Do you have financial statements or sources that shows Beats is making billions?

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/20/business/beats-headphones-expand-dr-dres-business-world.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Back in 2011 this article was written, with mention of sales. While I'm sure it's estimates, usually estimates are within a couple million. Without a doubt I think we can conclude that Beats has made over 1 billion in a year.

I dont get the hate. I would never buy a beats headphone. But they do look pretty (well for the most part). If anything - they created a viable market for more epensive headphones. I really dont think they buy beats for the headphones but it is a welcome nice-to-have. apple cant allow itself to have 50+ headphones in their product sortiment. But beats can because they are more of a fashion brand.

However- Jimmy Iovine and Dr.Dre are absolute experts in the music windustry. Dr. Dre is a top-notch producer with EXCELLENT contacts in the music business. He is also been praised for being one of the biggest sound experts in the industry. Also - it may sound racist- but he is a "black culture icon". Something, Apple has missed so far.

Jimmy Iovine has been in the music industry FOREVER. These guys are a great win for apple.

Dr. Dre is responsible for putting out BS rap music for the musically ignorant and Iovine was responsible for a lot of compilation albums. Look at Iovine's discography, he didn't really produce that many exceptional albums. Compilation albums are just taking existing tracks from a collection of existing albums sticking them in a new package and selling them and maybe putting a new unreleased track. That's nothing but marketing BS. That's what Iovine has been most responsible for. Check out the discography. Iovine has been a executive at Innerscope, but he may have to resign as a result of the deal. I really don't have respect for either of these money grubbing losers. Being rich doesn't mean you deserve it or have been making it from contributing to society in a positive way. Both of these two have no business being part of Apple. All they are going to do is figure out a way for them to make more money by promoting projects they make money from. It's not about quality with these two losers, it's about the MONEY HO.

So, after reading all this, I've lost all hope in Apple. :(

Apple's moving in the "luxury goods" and not technology-heavy direction. They're buying up brands and putting BS artists into senior positions all the while their competitors are buying up technology companies.

Google and Facebook have bought messaging, communication, robotics and artificial intelligence companies (you know, stuff that will be important in the future) and Tim Cook is buying urban brands.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. Apple's now on the same trajectory as Microsoft was in 2000s when Bill Gates left and salesman Ballmer became CEO.

Noticing the same vibe in a lot of comment sections too. It's weird. Dre and Iovine have built a billion dollar brand in a few years and got a well thought out streaming music platform off the ground which is gorgeously designed in the same timeframe. Enough so that very smart people at Apple (most smarter than you all) are willing to part with $3.2B for.

You have the geeky audiophiles on here complaining about sound quality from Beats headphones...and that's fine...but this deal isn't about headphones. And btw, those headphones are marketed to people who like BASS. Sorry we don't all listen to Tom Petty and the Beatles. Bass is coveted by many of us. Count me in as a guy excited what for Apple and Beats will do together. Forget the rest who obviously have a problem with what the Beats brand represents --- a level of cool that has long passed many of you by.

You mean artificial bass. I like bass too, but not to the point where it sound unnatural and artificial. There is a BIG difference between the two, but igornance only likes the artificial. The Beats Music platform only has about 100K paid subscribers and they were looking for more money as they were running out, so I don't know why they paid so much money for this.

Read this article.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/4/21/5636704/beats-music-is-struggling

They would have done better to buy Spotify if they wanted their subscription people, but how many of those people have iTunes accounts? All Apple needs to do is create their own subscription service and they don't really need to BUY one. Apple has 800 Million account holders, they just need to turn many of them into subscribers, which is all that Apple's really missing.

 Is there a counter somewhere that shows how many times people have said Apple is doomed? If not, can we set one up?

What I'm laughing at is that these idiots are making such a big deal about Dr. Dre becoming a billionaire (he'll find out how big his tax bill is going to be and how he may not be a billionaire afterwards.

Forbes already calculated it. After taxes he'll be at about 800M.

I believe this is the counter you seek:

LOL, sounds about right.

An observation.

When I see these rappers talk amongst themselves, they refer to each other as the N word, so all that does is make me think that's all they are. If they didn't use that word to describe themselves, then I might think differently. Not all black people use that term when referring to others that have the same skin color, because they are certainly more educated. Some are disgusted by that word, hence why they don't refer to each other as such, but some seem to use that word freely.

THINK about it.

You are right. The millions of people that these two have influenced are all wrong because you don't like their music. Its hip-hop. Oh and just to let you know, rap is a completely different genre of music than hip-hop. Quit hating on others for their musical finding and taste. You are one of those dorks that has to do everything in your life different from everyone else because mommy told you that you're special. Good for you. Stay set in your ways and close your mind, while these two make money BECAUSE they are open-minded and listen to what the majority need.

Before you say that the majority do not like it, I'd just like to remind you that money did not make these two gentlemen, it was the other way around buddy.

Go the Beats !!!.. :D

They make good stuff.

True, however, what are the advantages they'll be actually worse off, because Apple will take half.

I read they had revenues slightly over 1 billion last year and profit of 500M. They're not a public company so we don't know for sure.

How are my comments answering racism with racism? Have you read the offensive comments in this thread? How else can I interpret them? The way they read to me is that those posters don't believe a black man like Dr. Dre belongs at Apple. And good luck to them if that's their opinion, but if they're going to make those types of posts on a forum such as this, then they should expect a reaction.

There's many who are opposed to this rumoured deal - and that's cool. The figures flying around are a little baffling to me also.

But the comments and references to fried chicken shops, drugs dealers, ghettos, etc. etc. are way out of line. IMHO

RTP.

As I said previously, and will once again say in reply to the above post, I agree.

However the comment you made which I put in bold regarding the "saintly white Apple" could quite as easily be construed as racial in the context which it was used and in relation to the debate at the time.

Apple please, you cannot associate yourself with this company! You are not ghetto style, you are high quality with the best hardware, moving in with "beats" or Dre or whoever the other guy is,, is the worst move you can make.

Popeye's chicken would be better.

:eek::eek:

NOW we're getting to the heart of things with some of the naysayers.

Beats acquired MOG, which was the best music streaming service, IMO, for about $14 million in 2012.

Apple is paying a lot, presumably for the electronics part of the business, possibly for some intellectual property as well. Not sure the valuation is all that sane, but then a lot of the recent valuations of stuff like Nest and Whatsup are in the insane realm, as well. It's other people's (dumb) money, so as long as the dealers get their fees and management their bonuses, things will be just peachy for the direct participants.

Funny enough, HTC is probably getting a nice return on their $300 million investment in Beats :)

I hope Apple builds on MOG and makes it even better.
