I say this as an American. You do realize this is why most of the world looks at us with negative opinions. America is not the rest of the world lol.

Android has global market share dominance. Apple
Does not lol
In defence of Americans, he actually said earlier that he is from Europe, and living in America, so there is a fairly weird dichotomy to the America-centrism of the original statement.

Technology trends are pretty hard to predict accurately, so "definitely" seems a big leap. I really have no expectation that the iPhone will ever get close to 87% total market share in the US, let alone in two years, but time will tell. Technically even 87% wouldn't be a true monopoly, but if they hit that I won't argue your point.

Good luck with managing your teen's phones. I really do hope it works out for you, even if I think it was the wrong way to go about it. (If it doesn't work, can I recommend you just get them Android devices, as it seems a better solution for you, at least until they are old enough to not need to be parented, and you wouldn't be contributing to your reputed Apple monopoly.)
Thanks.

Fair enough.
Still the argument stands that American marketshare has no bearing on overall Global marketshare and I hate this metric that we need to open up iMessage simply because it is used more in America than anywhere else.

You have no idea what anti trust law says. It is always about a specific market. A company can even be monopoly within a city etc.

Search for geographic monopoly, if you want to learn.
I am well-aware that Apple (And Google) hold a duopoly of sorts in Silicon Valley.

One can also argue that without these so-called tech monopolies in those cities, those cities are also usually behind in technological progression compared to neighboring areas.

If you ask me, this is all being blown up by the press foaming at the mouth to report on the latest perceived David vs. Goliath battle involving Apple. Not surprisingly, reality once again appears to be quite different.

Same with the Apple Watch patent problem. Long-term, I really don't see anything to be worried about. Just a lot of noise by people who want to stir crap about Apple.

Search for geographic monopoly, if you want to learn.

"A geographic monopoly is when one company has exclusive rights to operate within a certain geographic area (NFL, MLB, NHL, NBA teams for example)."

Apple and google do not fit that definition; yet they are popular because their products for their target market are spot on.

There are no legal restrictions from other companies entering the search engine or cell phone space. (And difficulty in executing some business plan to penetrate the market doesn't count) Unlike my block where my home is the local cable company has an exclusive monopoly on cable services.

And, additionally the cell phone space is littered with 100s of competitors.

Why would you worry that world's largest company may be forced to open one of its applications? Do you have a lot of Apple stocks?

Beleive whatever you want, as Apple gets more market share it will exploit you guys more not me. I just bought a new Pixel 7 Pro for $100. Going forward I will see these deals more and more.

That above comment though has little to do with “geographic monopoly”. And if you think that google wont exploit you….

I have never understood this argument. I am not trying to come down on you, toobravetosave. You just happened to state when I was thinking about it...

My BIL and SIL are on Android. When I want to send them high-quality video, I just email it to them. Or post it on a family shared album we all contribute to.

I understand text is a little easier, but I so often hear people make it out to be IMPOSSIBLE to send high quality video to Android friends because of pernicious Apple. And it's just not so!

Text may be a preferred method, but it's not the only one.

Again, not singling you out, toobravetosave. I just don't understand the argument.
It’s a bad joke and notice only people with the green bubbles are the majority complaining about it. The rest of us with blue bubbles seem to of adapted and found a way around it. If you want in the club so bad buy an iPhone it’s not that difficult. If you like your droid keep it and download an app already. I can’t think of one person I know young or old that has NO APPS other than stock.

LMAO there are iPhone SEs for $300 or less depending on your carrier. They too have options for people who don’t want the latest greatest and fastest.

Still not $100 :) If I thought iPhone SE is better than Pixel 7 Pro, I would be in your religion.

If you did not read my comments above, I have got my phones free from my company since 2013. I left iPhone at iPhone 6S and never returned. It is not a device that solves my use cases. Too restrictive for me. It is not important if it is iphone 15 pro max or iphone SE. The same OS, same ecosystem.

Did you see the news that Justice Dept. is preparing for a large antitrust case against Apple? Android phones are, for the most part, not sold by Google but if some how Google exploits me I would have no problem to switch to iPhone as I have no brand loyalty, zero, null. Nothing for or against Google, nothing for or against Apple. They are just large companies for me. And phones are just tools for me.

"Justice Department officials are in the late stages of investigating the iPhone maker, focusing on how Apple has used its other products and services to defend against threats to its core business."

"Specifically, investigators have examined how the Apple Watch works better with the iPhone than with other brands, as well as how Apple locks competitors out of its iMessage service."

"Executives at Beeper, a start-up that made iMessage available on Android phones, spoke with investigators about how Apple blocked it from making it possible to offer messaging across competing smartphone operating systems."

They have to win the case though. But it’s still not a geographic monopoly.

Do you have any idea about antitrust law? If Apple had less than 50% market share in the US these cases would be dismissed without consideration. They are a risk now because Apple has more than 50% market share in the US. Anyways, beleive what you believe. Apple shares went down around 1% today and analysists see this as a risk. It is not important what self experts in this forum thinks.

Maybe you could provide some case law that has a foundation.

No they wouldn’t, imo.

It’s not a monopoly. Been through court and all.

This is becoming pretty damn comical. It's also incredibly nonsensical to me.

Pretty much all the Android users I know use Android phones because they dislike Apple and iPhones. Which is fine, that's their opinion and they're entitled to it.

But why would they be so desperate to use iMessage then? Seems a bit hypocritical to me. I mentioned this whole kerfluffle to my Android using friend and he was utterly perplexed as to why someone would go through so much trouble to use iMessage which "sucks", in his words.

If you're so desperate to use iMessage, just get an iPhone.
Agreed

With Apple finally giving into Google's pressure and implementing RCS now this year whenever they will within iOS 18, I don't get why Beeper continued to go through the trouble they did even when that announcement came about

Like you said, if one is that desparate for blue bubbles from iMessage, get an iPhone or just wait until RCS support comes for Apple as that hopefully will be some of the beginning of the end of what's such a silly thing in the green/blue bubble divide

Or just use Beeper :). To each his own.

You know the Bible will still be green with RCS! Bahahahaha

Wow, that is quite the huge misrepresentation from Beeper. Apple blocking them from using iMessage is not remotely the same as blocking them from offering messaging across competing systems.
