The M1 must cost very little for Apple to manufacture. It’s in so many products.

what can you do for that M1 performance, does it increase the web loading speed or app open speed? It's like add a V12 in a Honda Civic!
While it doesn't help in most things, (opening apps/driving to the grocery store), It will help in those tasks that require more power (Rendering videos/Driving on the highway or autobahn). And has the benefit of same fuel economy.

Very nice from them
The M1 power for the next 3-4 years for many ipad air users
Plenty of power for average joe.

Seems like a fair deal from apple.
M1 must have a good yield at tsmc.
Maybe they anticipate a little bit more challenge from new interest in tablets from alphabet and Samsung.

Economies of scale, the more they make the less each costs individually. They also don’t have to pay Intel for their cut.

M1 is wasted on iPadOS and with a 60Hz display it is even worse, you can't benefit from its GPU perf.
In real use it will perform atmost the same as a 2018 iPad Pro. There is a lack of coherence on iPad...

While iPhone and Mac are super optimised, Apple is doing poor software optimisation on its iPad line up (iPadOS is way too close to iOS...), probably due to lack of real competition, sadly

Why not put MacOS on iPad? That will be a killer!
iPadOS for use with touch and have a DeX-style setup where it switches over into the macOS interface when a mouse and keyboard are connected with all the iOS apps still running just fine through the Catalyst compatibility layer.

Have apps running in the background on iOS? They're still right there in the dock on the macOS UI ready to be used with all the expanded productivity features it brings.

iPadOS is baby software. The point is not to put MacOS in it but to build a true OS for productivity.
It's not hard to understand...
iPadOS is not suitable to use when the device is docked.

It's like Windows 8, and being stuck with UWP apps.

have iPadOS use the touch interface it has now when not docked, but when you dock it with a mouse and keyboard, allow the user to change into the macOS interface while all the iOS apps continue to run through the Catalyst compatibility framework.

I see people with a nice expensive iPad Pro with keyboard attached.. struggling..

Just get a MacBook Air M1. It’s so much more productive. iPad OS is still limited.
If all they are using it for is word processing having a tablet for consuming media might be the better cost versus use for certain people. I love my m1 MacBook Air however it’s my least used device next to my phone and iPad

I guess so but I feel like certain things are just so annoying on iPad consoles to a MacBook. I have an iPad and anything involving manipulation of data is a headache.

I just use it for some video and browsing.

iPads mouse and keyboard support is sufficient for many users though. Of course it might not be useful for a power user but someone who only checks email and might write a paper it’s fine. It’s especially useful for lower income families who might not be able to buy their kids multiple devices. You can use any cheap mouse and keyboard with them

That's only CPU but how about GPU? Hard to believe Apple doesn't gimp it in some way relative to iPad Pro M1 like they've done in the past.
