If the M1 can run MacOS, the only reason MacOS wouldn't function on an iPad is input. Why don't they just eliminate iPadOS and maintain, just Mac and iPhone?
Are you suggesting to make macOS more touch-compatible? Either way it's gonna be horrible UX for either the Mac or the iPad.

The iPad is limited by its software, not hardware. Netflix and YouTube don’t need an M1.

I 100% agree. iPadOS currently does not even allow you to manually size the active windows. The only options are to have both at the same width or one smaller and the other bigger. Ridiculous.
I never understood these common complaints throughout the forum about the iPadOS.

This is a discussion about hardware. Apple did something positive for the hardware, and for those of us who don't care about resizing windows, multitasking, controlling the space shuttle with our iPad, performing advanced quantum physics with our iPad, it's still a good thing.

If people don't like the iPad OS, why knock the hardware? Some of us use the iPad for what it is, and any hardware improvements is a good thing (to some of us).

Fortunately for everyone else, there is the Mac Studio M1 Super Duper Ultamino $60K option that probably can solve all the problems in the galaxy in a couple of nanoseconds. I bet it resizes windows too.

IMHO.

That’s a very good point. What Apple needs to do is work on iPad OS software to make it more effective, efficient and introduce some rich features. Perhaps, real multi-tasking integrations.
I’d still love to see MacOS as an option for iPad maybe even BootCamp style.

$300*

Price bump of $100 for mini-LED
Did they bump the 13" when they brought in mini-LED? I didn't realize that.

$300 is still worth it - you'll get most of that back when you sell it in a few years compared to the Air (I expect the Air would depreciate more than the Pro given the more future-proof features of the Pro) and if you keep it for its 5-10 years of useful life, then the $300 is worth it to extend the life and enjoy the features for that length of time.

Only downside of spending the extra $300 is if you lose or damage the iPad.

Nothing wrong with the Air of course, especially with the M1 under the hood, but I like my mini-LED pro-motion MacBook screen too much and want it on the iPad where it's even more noticeable with the touch interface.

Maybe in another 5-10 years, if ever. Apple knows many of its users at all levels will have an iPhone, a MacBook and an iPad. Heck, my wife has a 2009 white unibody MacBook, an iPhone 7+ and an iPad Air 2. You don't need the latest and greatest to be in the entire Apple ecosystem and enjoy the unique benefits of each device.

They won't cannibalize MacBook sales by putting a full desktop OS/apps on the iPad and apps will start taking advantage of the M1 Pro/Max/Ultra power, keeping them locked to the MacBook.

There must be some sort of throttling given the lack of cooling. I would bet if you ran the CPU cores at 100% using a benchmark app, it would start decreasing performance based on rising core temperatures.

I use my IPP as my main home machine. At work it is the best tool for a variety of highly mobile functions,eg disaster response and field reporting (although younger team members are happy with an iPhone pro max). Anything GIS related and in the field it cannot be surpassed. I expect in the restaurant scene it would be the ideal waiter device, although Apple seem to be pricing itself out of the market there.
It’s usefulness is way beyond consumption. The biggest weakness with ipadOS has always been in file management and window management in a multi app workflow. And other things like multiuser support would be very good for field operations.

iPadOS is baby software. The point is not to put MacOS in it but to build a true OS for productivity.
It's not hard to understand...
What is really hard to understand is why iPads should run Mac OS when there are perfectly capable Mac existing in all price classes.

Since when is too powerful a problem or a too large SSD? Too expensive, too short battery life and too poor performance are really valid concerns.

Sure, but just the same as it does in the iPad Pro, which was the point of the article.

Yup. The 12.9-inch received a $100 price bump last update. The 11-inch's price remained the same

If Apple is finally going to release iPadOS versions of its pro apps, then an M1 Pro would not be out of the question. FinalCutPro already looks made for touch so it should be a good transition if the chip can keep up. Teardowns of the M1 Pro MacBookPro show a simple cooling assembly meant to fit in a very thin enclosure. I have an M1 Pro Max and I’ve seriously never heard the fan turn on. I think an iPad could do without the fan and just have a simple passive cooling system.
Final Cut Pro looks made for touch?
No, no it doesn’t. That’d never, ever, ever work. It’s a rather simple UI for the most part, but it gets a lot more complex a level or two down. Final Cut for Touch would be like GarageBand for iPad, that’s iMovie.
FCPX could work on the iPad, but only with a keyboard and mouse/trackpad.

This is very good indeed. Performance will be at par with iPad Pro. Now, only those who want ProMotion and FaceID need to buy iPad Pro. iPad Air offers excellent value for money.

Except yes, it does.

FCPX was a huge departure from FCP7, not only with the magnetic timeline but how the UX seemed so oversized. And now with Universal Control and Sidecar, a lot of those design decisions make perfect sense.

The large touch targets, far larger than is necessary for a pointing device. Handles with grab cues ideal for a fingertip. Draggable and scrubbable everything. On FCP7, I used keyboard shortcuts for everything. In FCPX gestures are so intuitive with precision built in, that I rarely reach for my keyboard.

iPad Pro 12.9 users who use it as a Sidecar display will see how a native FCP for iPadOS would fit right in. An M1 Pro chip would make for a buttery smooth experience, perfectly capable of handling large files and complex renderings.

Because iPad is outselling macOS. :) Some Apple II folks never really got a handle of using a mouse, today’s mouse users may never really get a handle on using a touch interface. Folks that grew up with Macs will always want Macs and Apple’s happy to sell a few million to those that still want them. But, far more folks with an opportunity to buy a Mac or an iPad are choosing the iPad.

I see people with a nice expensive iPad Pro with keyboard attached.. struggling..

Just get a MacBook Air M1. It’s so much more productive. iPad OS is still limited.
And lighter too, if you add a keyboard to the iPad Pro. Just don't get the MBA with 8 gigs of ram.
