My argument was that there is better hardware out there than the ipad for the same kind of price. But nobody cares about Android on a tablet! Windows 8 on the other hand??? I know it wont be out until next fall but I think we can all assume how the market trend is going shift from then on.

If Apple desires customer loyalty it needs to reward us with more future-proof hardware. Don't you think?

Well considering that each month someone introduces a new android tablet making all others obsolete, im not sure Apple is the one you should be mad at. They gaurantee a full year before something new will replace it, which is pretty long in the tech-age.

glad they bumped up the ram

not a fan of this trend apple is starting to have of minor spec bumps of each new gen (iPhone 4 -> 4s, and now this)

This result just tells us what we already know - the extra horsepower in the iPad 3 is there to deliver iPad 2-like performance on the retina display.

There's no extra logic processing ability (except the integrated ISP). There GPU performance and memory should just about be able to keep up with the iPad 2 when taking in to account higher resolution textures, etc.

For me, iPad 2 performance on a retina display is just fine. There's also a better camera and, even if you don't live in a compatible LTE region, DC-HSPA to double throughput over 3G today.

I know that they lost the performance crown a while back but putting the new ipad side by side to the old transformer prime really shows how bad things are.

I suspect they will upgrade the ipad in September with an ARM A15 based quad core. or not...

Oh how awful, Apple is going to fail and go bankrupt for sure. Well the solution here is obvious, we should all sell our iPads and get the Android Mantis Transformer X2000 Prime QuadDivision Deluxe Touch with 4G LTE Carbon Extreme Edition. The name just rolls off the tongue, and really, who needs an iPad when you can get the faster Android Transformer Mantis Optimus Prime X2000 Touch Extreme Edition? It's running Android Bean Cheese Burrito Edition with Green Taco Sauce v6.2, such a good release.

Specs and benchmarks don't matter.

So tired of seeing stupidity posted with 'specs'

It really is fantastic having such a massive "viewfinder" for recording video. The reason I don't use my iPad 2 for video is because the camera is poor compared to the 4S, not because there is some inherent problem with the form factor. I agree that we will see more and more of this.

I would have rather had that 5 MP camera on the front, or maybe a 2 MP camera on the back and the front. I think the vast majority of people facetime or skype more than taking movies or pictures.

I would rather have seen it on both sides...but given the choice, I'll take the one on the back since photos/video is more important then facetime/skype.

Havent you heard, they just came out with the Android Mantis Transformer X2000 Prime Galaxy Universe Tab Divider 8.9 3.14 Lightning Note Slate running Double Scoop Banana Split with 4D 4G technology

great i just spent $500 on the exact same iPad i already have. man apple is starting to suck with these incremental updates!

Its easy to get away with on computers, but on disposable mobile Tech, you really need to beat yourself when releasing something new!

You have a 14 day return policy for a full refund. There problem solved.

I certainly don't consider 4 x the resolution, 4 x the graphics processor power, twice the RAM and faster cell connection speeds the exact same as the iPad 2. Even if the only difference between a iPad 2 and the new iPad was the higher resolution I would still buy the new iPad. This new iPad is going to be a bigger seller for Apple then even the iPad 2, mark my words. The prospect of 1080p airplay to the new Apple TV is quite appealing to me.

Quad core CPUs on these devices are absolutely useless. Heck, I have one of the original quad core intel CPUs on my PC and my cpu gadget illustrates it's almost always idle.

The only time it goes above 50% is whenever I am compressing (burning) videos. Then again, with newer video cards, DVDFAb also hands this function off to the GPU too.

The core rhetoric is the same deal with the Xbox 360 vs the PS3. The PS 3 had xx cores but at the end of the day, the 360's graphics are significantly better, because its GPU is better.

Not to mention, most modern internet browsers are now GPU hardware accelerated.

Apple upgraded the tablet where it actually matters and delivers real-world gains: GPU, screen, battery, and ram.

Finally...someone who 'gets it'.

Quad core is pretty much pointless on the tablet because you will never utilize it unless you are multi-tasking to the extreme.

The GPU is what matters and that is tied to the screen resolution.

LOL! I can imagine that those Android tablets are selling what in the dozens.

Well if you believe the people out there that think tablets 'shipped' is the same as tablets 'sold', Android tablets are absolutely killing the market.

I wonder what they do with all the hundreds of thousands if not millions of android tablets that never sell...in terms of parts, etc.

...Apple definitely wouldn't let it come out if it was in anyway inferior to the older iPad 2.

The new iPad is thicker and heavier.

By most definitions in mobile electronics, those measures are inferior. (It doesn't matter to me, I don't think its noticeable. Just commenting on the technical inaccuracy of the statement.)

The Android device manufactures are about spec bragging rights. Quad core looks great on paper nothing more. Not to mention that if you don't optimize the hardware properly you end up with horrible battery life.

"Gee, my tablet has a Quad core xGHz processor in it, what's your table have?" asked the tech spec hound.

RIM could answer a question like that. Shipped millions and only sold on the order of 200,000.

Before anyone says anything, I know RIM does not produce a Android tablet.

You always have the option to skip a generation or two. This has been the trend for awhile so better get used to it or jump ship.

Oh no! Why did I just throw away my 12-core Mac Pro? I was under the impression I would be able to run After Effects and Premier on the new iPad! I knew I should have been rational!

But seriously folks. We all know that in general Macs and iOS devices can do twice the work with half power since Windows and Android are so grossly bloated. FanDroids and Windards never seem to be able to grasp this fact. Their favorite argument: This Windows laptop has a 12.4Ghz processors and 100Gb of Ram and it only costs 11 dollars vs your MacBook Pro that cost 2000 dollars. Well why is that last year the MacBook Pro was regarded as "The Fastest Laptop We've ever tested" by multiple, reliable sources? It obviously doesn't have the obnoxious specs as an Alienware Laptop PC. How come the Alienware isn't branded as a workstation grade machine. Its because Specs vs Performance are relative to the OS. It's like putting a V8 engine in 10,000lb truck and assuming that it will be faster than a 2,000lb car with a V6.

We all know the guys over in Cupertino will not make a machine with sub par performance. Smoothness, ease of use and reliability come standard in every last one of their wonderful products. This is why Apple has been so successful. This is why so much excitement surrounds the release of every new product. And this is why the "New iPad" will be just as amazing as the original regardless of the "specs."

(Early) 2011 Macbook Pro, 2.2Ghz i7, 16GB Ram, 750GB HDD // (Mid) 2011 iMac, 3.4Ghz i7, 16GB Ram, 256 SDD + 1TB // Original iPad 64GB Wifi // iPhone 4 16GB // iPod Nano // iPad 3rd Gen (in the mail)

Yep. There's a reason that Windows has always been bluescreen-city/bloated for all these years. Having to cater to a seemingly endless ocean of different possible hardware configurations really takes its toll. It makes hunting down performance/reliability bugs MUCH harder for Microsoft as well as all of the various hardware vendors. Windows does great with GPU performance, but that's it.

What's the point of a fast CPU when you have no decent software to run on it.

How about battery life? What's the point of having a fast CPU if the damn device has to be anchored to the charger all the time.

LOL, I got marked down for this.

Forget spec sheet for a moment. In terms of user experience how is the Tranaformer Prime better than the iPad? Is the UI smoother? Do web pages load faster? Do apps run better? I've never used a TP before so I'd be curious to know.

If I did this right, the comparisons look like this:
Code:
                              iPad 2 iPad 3 Change
Egypt Fixed Time ms 47551 47261 -1%
Egypt High Fps 59.3 59.9 1%
Egypt Offscreen 720p Fps 90.1 140.9 56%
Egypt Standard Fps 59.6 59.9 1%
Pro Fixed Time ms 20868 20857 0%
Pro High Fps 59.3 60 1%
Pro Offscreen 720p Fps 151 252.1 67%
Pro Standard Fps 60 60 0%

Could you please explain to me what each of those scores means ?

Thanks.

Here in Canada, the cable TV providers, internet service providers and wireless providers are giving them away for free*.

This is the important question. Specs by themselves mean nothing in a tablet. It's all about the user experience.

I'm sorry but I really don't understand this view at all. Yes, the CPU seems to be the same but:

a) The screen, GPU, RAM, camera and battery have ALL been upgraded, in the case of the screen and GPU to top of the range components (and the battery looks like it'd fall into the same category). As far as the end user experience is concerned that's a massive update not an incremental one.

b) It's not as if anyone is crying out for an improved CPU anyway. GPU yes, gotta feed that Retina display, CPU though, no. The iPad 2 is more than fast enough already, an incremental boost in speed probably wouldn't make much of a visible difference anyway. The only real way to give a significant increase is either increase the number of cores (battery issues, heat issues, the OS and apps have to make good use of more cores) or to shift to a new version of the CPU (ARM15, not yet ready).

Yet people get hung up on a single figure and that's that... I really don't understand some tech geeks anymore. :(

I think the big missing WOW factor here is, is the iOS. The iOS could use some improvements such as more gestures, better multi-tasking, stocks, calculator, weather, a full screen or sidebar notification center, etc. I and i'm sure others were hoping for some neat iOS features or at least a mention of an iOS upgrade later in the year like they did the last time.

Steve Jobs was always about the WOW factor and quite frankly it seems there's just no WOW in all of this. True, retina is awesome feature nothing wrong with that but you gotta add that extra pizzazz to get folks to WANT to upgrade no matter what....And that was something that Steve Jobs was really good at doing. This is a huge upgrade to iPad 1 owners but mostly incremental to iPad 2 owners. Add in iOS updates to the pie and you just added something more "wanting" added with the hardware. Remember, it's about the hardware and software.
