What guess game? Last week, the then-current iPad Pro was pretty good, and this week, the new iPad Pro is pretty good.

Last week's will even work with the Magic Keyboard.

Nothing is forcing you to upgrade. Just like with a Mac, an upgrade cycle of three to five years is probably fine.

I have to know whats in the pipeline to make my decision. Apple could go on for another 2 years not releasing a new iPad Pro update or they can release one in early September just 5 months later.

This has got to be one of the most pointless updates ever. I feel sorry for the ones who were holding off on the 2018 model for this.
Don't feel. iPad pro models from 2018 were discounted so they may have gotten some good deal (at least some of them).
I already have an 2018 11 inch pro model and it’s pretty much doing what I need it to do.
I think the 2020 makes sense for those on much older iterations. For me it’s not even a choice to upgrade. It makes no sense.

To my use case: iPad pro is better than regular ipad because of the speed vs regular iPads.
I travel (at least used to before the virus outbreak) and I love when I do airport check-in to carry such a small device. I hate packing my house for nothing.
I usually use email, note taking and word processing on iPad. Movie making and photo editing is only Mac for me now.

I might go for the new Folio with trackpad although the price is so steep! I would like to try it first or at least to get some people’s reviews for it before maybe... ordering it. It would definitely spare me to carry a mouse as well.

So yeah... no reason to go for 2020 for existing owners of 2018 versions. I will hold on until Mini-Led or Oled and a drastic change of the device. It does its job properly.

I guess it’s saying something when an iPad running a 1.5 year old processor still smokes anything out there in the market today.

There is no tablet market. There is only the iPad market.

To each their own...

I love my 2018 12.9” iPad, however- I’m VERY interested in the early glimpse of the future of AR.
This year, almost certainly, the inclusion of lidar/tof & wigig in 1st the iPads Pro, then the 2020 iPhones will allow them to be the 1st Apple devices to in some way interact with/control/send content to a future AR/VR product; which patents show will use that tech.
Getting an extra 64gb on the base & the ram bump from 4gb to 6gb without having to order a 1tb model is a nice perk as well.

Well if you care about AR then by all means it makes sense.
The RAM - well again it depends on your use case. For large videos, photos and probably even AR yes. Otherwise it shouldn't impact that much.

Like I said before, for many the upgrade will not make sense (those coming from 2018 models) however there will be many stating that they need - instead of admitting they want the latest and greatest. (Not that I have an issue with that :) )

It seems 6GB RAM on iPP is a lot worse after running the AR application. People should not upgrade to the lidar models due to deficiency of memory.

Lol, didn’t the new AR Kit just ship yesterday??
How in the hell did you already get your hands on a new LiDAR app & then track a bug down to “lack of RAM” so quickly??

If true... color me impressed!

The more I think about the more I think this was just a stopgap update to the current iPad model to bring out LIDAR scanners into the product line early to spur AR development. The real update is full cursor support and the new trackpad magic keyboard.

“the real update” is all software, and compatible with the 2018 model. (i don’t disagree with you, though)

In terms of upgrading a substantial concern is the hardware . I have an 12.9 iPad Pro 2018 with a minor bend which I can live with in a good case. I also have the original iPad Pro 12.9 in an Ottebox case . Although my 2018 Pro is faster ect, I only travel with my iPad Pro 1gen because the 2018 feels frail even cased, I'm reluctant to take it out of the house.

Hopefully the next iPad Pro will be strong and light. I'm even willing to sacrifice some thinness and weight for a more robust machine.
