And if you fall off your bike and land on it that's not your fault either? There's no difference whether you did it not.

If It was fine before you put it in you pocket and its not when you take it out. Not your fault though we need to find someone to blame?

Its a fragile device, more fragile then other phones and previous iPhones. You know this. Yet when you do some outdoor activity and it gets damaged you start pointing the blame finger? How embarrassing.

Its aluminum it bends! What are you going to say next? If you drop it and the screen cracks its defective? Aluminum bends, glass breaks.

My solution (one size does not fit all). I do a lot of back packing for weeks on end. I have a dumb phone and leave my iPhone at home. And I even have the more durable 4S. But I do that because I know I could break it. If it gets broken in my backpack I'd take responsibility for it, however I choose to avoid that situation.

I'm not defending the 5's weak design. Because it should be more durable. But its just silly that everyone knows about this yet refuses to be more delicate with device or avoid buying one in the first place.

Hmm I don't think you understand what I am saying. Lets say my phone is perfect and I go on a hour bike ride. With phone in pocket. And it bends. Are you saying this is my fault?

If so, how could it be mine or the OP fault for the phone bending when all your doing is riding a bike? That is insane.

I think you'll be ok and there is more to the story then we see/hear. But yes if you put it in your pocket and it gets bent because force was exerted on it that it could not handle then its your fault.

You could say this about anything. It can't handle being in my pocket while I'm wrestling?! That's insane. It can't handle being in my pocket as I go into battle for the military? That's insane! These are all things people do and might have a phone on them.

The vast majority of bike riders with iPhone 5's don't have a problem. So I think knowing the phone could bend and keeping it safe is all you need to do.

Do you think the iPhone 5 is defective because it bends easier then an iPhone 4? Is the phone only defective if it does bend? Did you ever own a 4/4S? Because this one is bent does that make then all defective?

The 5 just bends easier and doesn't flex back yeah it sucks but you don't really need to be a physics major to figure out something that is thinner, lighter weight, longer, and made of a pliable material will bend easier compared to something not like that.

Well then there has gotta be more to the OP story. But if his phone bent while he was on a bike ride, not extreme biking or anything, just a normal bike ride, then I see a fault with the design. I dunno.

Just check the other threads. It is an issue, but it's only affecting a small amount of people. But this shouldn't happen.

In my case, got the 5 when it was released. No case, it's a beautiful design, why use a case?
Last April I took a vacation week in Paris. Somehow in the trip back, from Paris to San Francisco, 10-12 hours, my iPhone got bent, just the same as the OP. It was my pocket, I was seated, the belt was never on top of the phone, etc.

Sadly they didn't exchange my iPhone, they just couldn't believe that this happened "magically".

At least the phone is still working fine. And I think it's a little less bent.

Unless Uri Geller was nearby it didn't bend itself.

Putting in your pants pocket will pretty much assure you'll bend it at some point. Especially while riding a bike.

That's awful! Unlucky, I wonder what caused it. I hope they replace everything for you man... I'd be so gutted. Goodluck with the genius's, they will probably think you dropped it.

Now, get ready for what everyone else will say...

This never happens. Apple products are infallible and impossible to have defects. You must have jailbroken it and put Android on it, which caused the phone to bend. Think different.

...and dual booting with Windows Phone 8? ;-)

Where else are you supposed to put your phone? This is a legit question if your comment was serious. It's MEANT to go in your pocket.

Sure, but how am I supposed to realize that this particular iPhone will bend? After all, all the previous iPhones/phones that I have had never displayed such an issue. Is it not a good assumption that this model should have been built with similar durability in mind?

As far as I know apple never told me the iPhone was too fragile to be kept in my pocket. They never say to not take it biking, in fact many of their commercials include bikers.

And this is the reason apple replaced it no questions asked, it IS a design flaw I DIDNT crash or sit on it and that is why I got it replaced.

I'm not asking apple to replace it cuz it broke while skydiving or dirt biking, simply riding my bike 2 miles to a friends house. It's not rocket science.

+1. Some apple fan boys still dont realize that the iphone 5 has a flawed design and are going to blame everybody else for bending the phone, except apple.

If you fall off a bike its the same as if you dropped it, of course it your fault.

So thousands of people in Amsterdam, that ride their bike everyday to their school/work, should leave their iphones at home because of a chance it might bend on their way there?

So why doesnt HTC One bend? Its an aluminum phone and not much thicker than the ip5.

Oh thats right, lets spend 700$ on a phone, just so you can leave it home when you go out for more than a walk. Now THATS embarassing.

I'm not defending the 5's weak design. Because it should be more durable. But its just silly that everyone knows about this yet refuses to be more delicate with device or avoid buying one in the first place.
It something when you grab a phone and bend it on purpose, and its something completely else when you go out with a bike and come back with a bend iphone because some idiot at Apple doesn't know much about physics and choosing right materials for a day to day usage.

Where else are you supposed to put your phone? This is a legit question if your comment was serious. It's MEANT to go in your pocket.

I agree with you that one's cell phone is to go into your pocket if you so wish!

But the iPhone 5 sacrifices structural integrity for the sake of style. Apple perceived that it's most loyal users were looking for "thin" and "light" so they gave it to us.

Most iPhone 5 units do not get bent but it is proven here that they will if pushed past it's limits.

I think that there are likely two factors at play here: (1) the design of the aluminum unibody is thin and not tolerant of manufacturing flaws (2) Defective metal in some phones.

Basically, if the metal used in any particular phone is up to spec, probably no problems. However, the design probably does not work well when the metal is not as strong as it should be, so even slight variation in the alloy makes the finished product susceptible to bending.

If the design called for thicker aluminum in the unibody, phones might not bend even if the metal was not quite up metallurgical spec. This is speculation on my part, of course.

For those of you saying how do you carry a phone if not in your pocket, there's this new thing out called bags. Do give it a try. :D

Joking aside, the iPhone 5 is so long, personally I'd find it uncomfortable to have it in my pants pocket while riding a bike, or sitting for hours in a plane, even if it were not suspectible to bending. But that may be just me.

Lol, love some of the replies, funny stuff.
That's ******, I would take it to an Apple store and get it replaced, or rather see what they'll say and then get it replaced.

Finally somebody here makes valid points. Thank you.

I'm just saying that it requires a lot of force to bend aluminium. And there are far more reports I've seen of the glass on the iPhone 4/4S shattering than this bending. This s actually very durable. These things happen.
