Yes, simply because when I first picked up the iP5, it was noticeably lighter and thinner and made me realize that it's most likely not as durable.

And other people may have realized that metal tends to be more durable than glass.

Seems Apple needs to redefine what "normal" use is...If they are going to be damaged by use that previous iPhones would stand, then they need to say so. Putting a phone in pocket and finding it bent and being out of luck isnt fair. We arent privy to their testing...

Making a phone thinner, lighter and at the same time longer makes it more prone to damage.

It is common sense to "most":p

It seems people are putting their phones in their back pockets, why would you put your phone in your back pocket? You're literally sitting on your phone every time you bend your butt. If it were your front pockets, that's a different story...

Log story short, Apple Austria is replacing my iPhone 5 (bent). After speaking to them on the phone I sent some pictures and got called back: they said, as long as there is no point of impact and the touchscreen/display is flawless it's covered by warranty. He said no iPhone until the iPhone 5 did this so it's the phones fault and not the users!

Cuz you are pursuing the mall in hopes of finding some new clothes and would rather not hold onto the phone with your hand the whole time...Front pocket? Not with jeans on...

I use belt clips, but that's just me. I think back pocket is perfectly fine, just don't sit down.

But the problem is people sit down with the phone their back pocket. I wear shinny jeans and yet my phone fits I my front pocket.

NO its not fine. You think people who place it in their back pocket will take it out each and everytime before sitting down. Don't think so

Even some front pockets are tighter and sitting down with the phone inside could bend it. Try it. Look at your iphone 5 in your front pants pocket to see if its not some what tight. Not to mention one can press against something (A desk, a chair or hitting it getting up from a table) in front of you pressing the iphone and bending it over time.

This issue has been reported since the first weeks from the launch of iPhone 5 in the Apple forums.
The fact that the bending occurs always in the same zone, with users not reporting falls (which would carry other damages of course), naturally leads to think of a design flaw. It should be quite clear.

Oh brother! Bottom line: does apple forbid putting phone in pocket? If not, then putting phone in pocket is fine.

Horrible analogy since eating a phone is not a normal activity.

Sure but I was more focused on the "apple forbids" part. "Putting phone in pocket" is absolutely meaningless. There are many "pocket" and body types. It reminds me of the uproar after folks saw Jobs pull a Nano from his jeans pocket. Everyone expected that to mean it was okay to include keys and coins without scratching the plastic front.

How about this...I drive to work the same time and route every day but today I crashed. It can't be my fault since I was doing the same thing I always do.

Surely you jest...

I kind of agree with those who say "you're carrying it wrong." I do kind of understand the feeling that phones should fit in a pocket without bending. After all, before iPhone 5, most phones did fit in your pocket, and did not bend. However, the first time I put an iPhone 5 in my pocket, it was immediately obvious to me that because it was so long and so thin, if I bend down or sit with it in my pocket, I would be putting pressure on it in a way that made me feel uncomfortable with the idea. I can't say I thought it would bend, but I did think it was not a good idea to keep it in my pocket while I sat for a long time, much less while I rode a bike.

And looking around at all the larger size Android phones, I'm sure the only reason we aren't getting complaints about those things bending is because they are too big to fit in pockets to begin with. With larger size comes a trade-off. I think people need to start getting used to the idea that smartphones aren't really pocketable. Especially if you are riding a bike.

Having paid a bundle for this phone, I try not to damage it, so I bought a nice belt case, and for almost a year the phone has had no damage. Pocket for a flip phone, OK, but for a longer phone made of Aluminum, no for me. ;)

Apple really needs to put out a disclaimer: "Not for your pockets"

Like I said, if someone sits down then that is their problem. None of my phones were built to handle my weight. But putting phone in pocket and walking around in public = bent phone? Unacceptable!

Why? Pockets really are not the same. I can fit a #10 envelope in my slacks. My jeans barely contain my slim wallet. How about a shirt or jacket pocket? It really is up to the user to use some (un)common sense. Disclaimers of this sort are a silly cop out.

Go try to bend an iPhone at a store. I did. I think you will find that it doesn't budge under any reasonable amount of force. I think I probably could have bent it but I would have been way beyond what the phone would experience day to day in my care.

I eventually bought an iPhone 5 and have had no issues.

Even more reason that an iPhone shouldn't bend in ones pocket unless sat on.

this happened to my phone as well. i was charging my phone in my kitchen and didn't really think about it but placed the phone on top of my microwave. later, my girlfriend microwaves something for 30 seconds. i then go to check my phone and notice it is bent. it is bent the same way as the op's.

I wouldn't recommend ever putting a mobile phone on top of a microwave whilst it is been used. You don't expect iPhones to bend but you'd expect some form of damage potentially. Certainly don't tell Apple you placed it on a microwave as they will most likely laugh in your face and rightly so IMO.

I had an old samsung slider phone, one of the real thin ones. It was in my back pocket when I sat down I shattered the screen, wtf, I should have rushed back to the shop for a replacement, right?

Guess you are lucky the glass doesn't break when you sit on an iPhone as it would be pretty painful to have some of the glass shards in your ass.

that sounds like a typical response from people in this forum. clearly it was an accident. thankfully it works just fine.

Also just noticed this occurring on my iPhone 5. I googled it and found this thread, so I thought I may as well add some pics.

Had my iPhone 5 since December 2012. Never any problems with it. Always kept in in a Belkin Grip Candy Sheer Case.

No problems to functionality of the phone though, and I don't even notice when it's in the case, so I'm not going to bother complaining to Apple about it.
