Humanscale M8

Hello all,

I had a question that i didn't find anywhere that i hope somebody here might be able to answer. i was thinking about getting the Humanscale M8 for my imac 27" and was wondering if i need to order any adapters to mount it (VESA?). Or does everything i need come with the M8?

Thanks!

Cotytech is a Taiwan based company that sells a variety of monitor arms and other ergonomic products.

They have a number of arms which may support the 27" iMac, but the first one I'll point out in this post is their Apple Monitor Desk Mount Quick Release Dual Arm. It's actually quite a basic arm with no gas shock or spring, however what is interesting about it is that it doesn't require the buyer to purchase a separate Apple VESA Adapter Kit. Here is the company's YouTube video showing how to directly attach it to an iMac. At $159.99, it isn't cheap for a basic arm (though you do save the $39 on the VESA adapter).

The second arm may be stretching it a bit - - it's payload is 26.4 lbs, so it's actually over it's weight capacity supporting an iMac with it's stand removed. It's feature is it's length. It is called the Long Reach LCD Monitor Arm MW-M25WB, and it is fully articulating with a gas pneumatic spring combination. It extends a full 73" from it's wall mount and costs $773.99.

That's interesting, Bob. Disappointing about the inadequate carrying capacity, though I'm wondering if future 27" iMacs might not be lighter, if they go permanently to SSD only plus more lightening. Though not a fan of the undersling design - looks too medical/hospital gear.

"Copytech" indeed. That first one is the exact arm Monoprice is selling, and for $70 more.

So, it appears the quest to find an actual iMac Levitate Arm in the wild continues...}

I tried the levitate arm, albeit not with a imac, it was with a 24" display. It was very well built and looked great, but unless I got a defective unit, it was way too difficult to adjust. The chief arms I got after are superior in every way.

The only way to justify this emoticon would be, if you were to hold that iMac with your own arm. In that case I would recommend some Anavar or D-Bol, also look into intermittent fasting and make sure to go heavy on your compound moves. You will be making all kinds of gains in no time, holding that iMac like a champ - god speed brother!

Is iMac is like HP or Compaq?

Is like is Commodore or Schneider

With the new 2012 27" Mac now weighing only 21 lbs (down from 30.5 lbs) - - a whole new realm of lighter duty arms becomes feasible!

Heh, I just came in here to post the same thing... a world opens up... but for those of us who need the very longest arms, it doesn't open up that much, to be honest... still, I like the lighter idea. Not that I'm buying a new iMac anytime soon. I still have my late 2009 27", which I bought Feb 2010. I've had the hard drive replaced once under Apple Care and also the DVD drive. Now, it looks like I need to have both replaced again! My Apple Care expires Feb 2013, but I have a one year extension through my AmEx Gold. I don't see buying the new iMac before 2014 at the earliest, at which point hopefully some inevitable bugs will be worked out (I still remember the epic "yellow display" outcry from years past!). New chip architecture will be nice, bigger SSD drives and maybe even retina display (though Apple will probably not do it for as large a size as 27"). In any case, if I buy in 2014, by then my current arm will probably have a pretty weak cylinder and it'll be time to buy both a new iMac and new arm. But I still have a couple of years. For others though, this weight drop is exciting news! Hopefully a lot more arms will come to market...

Does anyone who wall mounted their iMac's have the screws from the desk mount to iMac screen laying around they would sell?

I seem to have misplaced mine, willing to paypal payment + shipping if anyone can help me out.

I'm located in MD.

I have a terrible feeling this may be because the backs of the new iMac's are kind of beveled and cant fit a flat adapter on the back. Not to say that they couldn't just make one....hopefully.:apple:

Here's the first hint on the fate of the 2012 27" iMac arm capability that I've seen in print (via TechCrunch)...

Finally, as with previous generations, the 21.5-inch iMac does not feature a removable stand for VESA mounting, but new to this generation is the fact the 27-inch one apparently seems to lack this capability as well.

That's hardly concrete proof, but between that and Apple's ominous note, it's lookin' pretty grim arm fans.

:(

While waiting for the impending Mayan-esque announcement from Apple of the end of the iMac arm era, here is a lighter spirited time lapse video of an iMac/iPad arm display table at The Gadget Show Live in Birmingham...

Apple Confirms New 2012 iMacs Do Not Support VESA Mounting

Apple’s insanely thin new iMacs may be gorgeous and powerful, but many of the design decisions that Apple made on the new desktops leave cause for concern – such as using proprietary SSDs, making it extremely difficult to replace RAM on 21.5-inch models, taking steps to prevent users from upgrading and repairing their own iMacs and more (1, 2, 3), all for the sake of making it slightly prettier.

Today, MacTrast has received exclusive confirmation from Apple about yet another design concern that will leave many users disappointed. According to a message received from Apple representative Laura Metz, the new iMacs do not support VESA mounting of any kind, making it impossible to use them with wall mounts, articulating arms, or other mounting solutions.

Apple representative Laura Metz, in response to my email inquiry about the matter:

Hi Glenn,

Thank you for your inquiry. The new iMac is not VESA mount compatible at this time.

We appreciate your feedback on this feature and will take it into consideration.

Thanks,
Laura

Apple has supported VESA mounting across its line of iMacs and Cinema/Thunderbolt displays for quite some time – and the exclusion of mounting options will come as a huge disappointment to many power users (especially those who have already invested hundreds of dollars in mounts), as well as businesses who mount iMacs for display or kiosk purposes.

There are already third-party solutions in the works that latch directly to the new iMac’s stand – but many consider leaving the stand in place to be tacky. It also doesn’t work well in all mounting situations – like a wall-mounted kiosk.

Suspicions have been circulating for a while that the new iMac’s stands can’t be readily removed and swapped for mounting hardware, due to a footnote on Apple’s VESA mount at their online store noting incompatibility with the new 27-inch iMac. With today’s confirmation, those suspicions are now facts. Form over function strikes again. Very disappointing indeed.

Sorry - - I guess I should added a ;) - - I was just poking a bit of fun at Apple's use of the phrase "at this time".

The teardown by R.OG (referred to in this post) already put the kibosh on any iMac arm glimmer in this generation.

Apple could EASILY provide a VESA mount instead of the foot as a build-to-order option. Either mounting option could be attached in seconds before the main logic board is installed. All they need to do is design the part. Then add this option to the order page on the web:

VESA adapter + detachable stand [Add $100]

-- see what I mean?

That would make an interesting alternate universe, but unfortunately it's not the one inhabited by the Apple that we all know and love.
