Just went to the Best Buy across my street that had the iPad 2 in there deals of the week thingy and they said they would have a ton, went an hour early they don't have any, 10 minutes prior to store opening they don't have any. They said they aren't getting any but you can put $100 down to reserve one to get it by the beginning of May. Fk that, online Apple store it is for the same amount of time. Also target's, toy's r'us, etc don't have any even though they say they do. Just a heads up if you're in a booming city on the east coast.

The board that oversees what the top 3 executives do at Apple knows more than you about production issues of MILLIONS of hi-tech devices.

Anybody familiar with production and distribution issues knows that despite excellent planning there may be issues during production that cannot be forecast.

Selling and shipping MILLIONS in a few weeks is a exactly fiasco for whom?

Thunder.... trying to educate some people is such a waste of time. :)

I'd challenge on him that his Walmart actually has them. Even here where I live (which is not the high tech capital of the world), they have been hit and miss. They have them one day and gone that day. Just last week, I checked Walmart inventory on-line, said they had what I wanted, drove there within the hour and it was sold.

I'm confused. Are iPad 2s in short supply or not? If they cannot be found at multiple Apple stores, why is Apple broadening distribution to Toys R us?

Broadening distribution -- whether new territories or new outlets in established territories -- usually follows a slow down in sales growth.

The only other possible explanation is that some initial production constraints have been overcome and the product (or particular models of it) is arriving for Apple in numbers exceeding their ability to sell. But then, iPad 2s would be in plentiful stock in Apple stores.

Don't get it.

Best Buy promotion con

First in to Best Buy this morning - manager says the promotion is just a 'reservations' promotion - if you buy a $100 gift certificate they'll put you on the wait list and will call you in next 3-4 weeks when they expect to get stock. Don't bother. Is this not illegal - or just shady practice?

Dont let them fool you !!

All they are doing today is a pre-order there is no one device avail on BEST BUY stores !!!

called 5 stores and they all say the same WE DO NOT HAVE IPAD 2 STOCK !!

This promo is for pre-order only !! with shipping date of 3-4 weeks and u have to leave a 100$ bill to reserve it so what the point anybody !!!?!!

Toys R Us have been a retailer since day 1. There is no broadening here. And using multiple retail outlets means that Apple is not limited in the territories it covers with its own store chain. That is why since day 1, multiple retail chains have carried the iPad 2.

There are a lot of haters on this site. And I mean a LOT.

Plus there are a few people who have zero connection with reality. The type of people who ignore COGS, have no understanding of the economics of consumer electronics manufacturing and marketing, and disregard the basic laws of Newtonian physics. Basically, people who live in an effing dreamworld based on an totally domestic American worldview largely based on sci-fi movies and pop culture, with no real world experience as a contributor to a global economy.

I figured the whole promotion thing was a scam
But I hve to go to best buy bc a return.
So I'm sitting outside my bestbuy. No one here.

But the inventory shows they have some. Think they're for sale?

huh? none in stock

The local BB was listing all varieties in stock online a few hours ago. I was 3rd inline as the doors opened.

The dude says "We have NO iPad(2)s." - they have been showing iPad(1) on hand, and seem to have some around still at $100 off.

I consider this just folly, and borderline 'bait-and-switch'.

I wonder how many other stores have ZERO stock, especially after the rumor about conflict with Apple about stock being held back.

It doesn't really matter to me, my Apple online order is scheduled for delivery 10 days from now. I just wanted to see if there would be a line (I got inline about 5 min prior to doors opening) and what sort of inventory was on hand.

Now I know.

LOL! That flies right in the face of "Content Creation on iPad" ********ists - it's found the right place - "Toys" r us! :D

Apple rightly wants to gain as wide of a distribution as possible while the product is hot and lock in these slots on the floor. They should be able to ramp up production in the future. Also, these retailers are looking to increase traffic, which drives impulse purchases. Try getting your kid out of Toys-R-Us without buying anything.

Also, people are different. Some like to shop online, some like the personal attention from a specialized store, some will just pick it up on impulse.

It's certainly possible the breadth over depth availability will bite them, but right now it only helps feed the popularity to see it advertised everywhere and available almost nowhere. It's kind of like a hit song or pop artist, I guess. Perhaps iPad 2 is the electronics product version of Elvis or the Beatles.

Haha, a pre order event? Wow, what a balls up.

Apple rapped them over the knuckles for allegedly withholding stock and rightly so. I wonder if this is the result.

It sounds like you are describing a large percentage of Apple users.

Apple tends to give technology a very "feminine" touch - meaning the products tend to have very curvy, attractive, almost sensual lines....Attractive, minimalist design will always have some association with feminine sensibilities. This is normal.

Dude. You need to get out of the house and out from behind your iDevices.

Seriously.

I'm fine with Best Buy... but Radio Shack & Toys "R" Us, not so much.

Seriously, who cares who sells them? Do they affect how you live? This cracks me up. No matter who sells them, we all have to get up and go to work and live our lives.

Doesn't matter where Apple sells its products. Better to make your products available everywhere than in just one or two specific stores. Remember: Not every city has an Apple store and can be quite a distance to the closest.

Best Buy is an ideal place to sell iPads, since its a consumer electronics store.... Apple is a consumer electronics company ( these days ).

BTW - Best Buy has been selling iPads for a long time, so only makes sense they sell iPad 2...

^^^^ Very true!!

I don't know that I would call it feminized, but it certainly seems bratty and petulant. Sell them everywhere! Someone mentioned Starbucks and 7-11... and while they were being douchenozzles about it, I say those sound like great ideas. I don't care if they sell them at hot dog carts in the park... the more places that sell them and the more people that see them the better. When you limit an item to boutique stores, the items get a stigma of being posh and elitist... that is NOT how you move tons of product.

The Commodore 64 was also a revolutionary product that was priced exceptionally well and far ahead of its time. As soon as Commodore moved this product into Toys R Us, Kmart, etc. it became a toy. If Costo, Sam's Club and Walmart were around back then, I'm sure we would have seen them there as well.

Apple is making this move to combat Android market share. Android devices are largely sold through cellular operators, so for Apple to open the flood gates at a number of large consumer retailers is a sign that Apple is getting more aggressive about increasing iOS market share in places where Android has no presence. Without a viable Android competitor in the tablet space, all of those analysts are going to have to start revising their market share charts soon.

Hi, I just bought an iPad 2 and am having trouble installing the latest version of iOS. Also, I'm having a 3G connection issue with the Verizon network and I think there may be some light bleed on the LCD panel. Can you help me?

Best Buy Bull S__t Again

Just returned from Best Buy after I went to their Nation wide sales event, and they haven't recived any for over 1 1/2 weeks. They are selling reservations for future stock, for $100.00. What a load of s__t. If they had said that they didn't have any, and they were just tring to see how many customers would show up to put down a $100.00 deposit, with no est. of time of when you would recive your order. Thats wrong. At $4.50 a gallon of gas, I can't keep going down to see if they have any.

I see them at the Best Buy Kiosk's in all the major airports around the country.

If you have flown anywhere lately you have notice Apple products, IPads, MacBooks are the preferred electronic device on most major flights. I was at JFK last week, The waiting areas had 100's of Ipads built into the seats for all those waiting so they could surf the web.

Which terminal was this? Or are you getting confused with those generic touch-screen devices at JetBlue T5? Those are to order food and have them delivered to you at the gate- not iPads.

They still do :)

The nice thing about iPad is it is that sort of a Trojan Horse consumer item.

It is far from a toy, though it is a "toy"...

I've been saying for a while that Apple is serious about getting a more established cred for their gaming business and this is another example.

Now parents can buy their kids (and themselves) a gaming device with free to $10 (...etc) games.

Long term it's a better investment than a lower cost handheld or console when you figure ALL of the games are at the price level lower than the majority of the games you'd buy (@ $20-$60 a pop) with a Nintendo/Microsoft/Sony device and aside from the Arcade level downloadable titles.

You also get FAR more utility from an iPad.

It's a toy, it's a tool

Toys R' Us? I though they only sold video games and...toys!?

I have an almost 9 month old boy. He was using the iPad to play games by 6 months of age. The iPad *IS* one of his favorite toys and with it's education and entertainment potential, is certainly a good investment. I need to go because he's about to attack my keyboard. I'll give him the iPad to play with :)
