"Completely ignorance"?? BTW, just because something sells good, does not make it useful. I guess you consider the lady gaga album as useful

How narrow-minded. It's complete ignorance to call a product that will sell between 25-35 million units next year useless, especially when you haven't used one (maybe apart from playing with it at the store for a few minutes).

As I said, the iPad has replaced my $1,799 MBA and it's less than half the price, half the weight, and double the battery life.

Some of the criticisms are ridiculous. Heavy video editing and high-end windows gaming? Have fun trying to do these things on ANY notebook, regardless of price.

It is ignorant because until you have used the iPad extensively, you are in no position to call it useless.

It is also condescending to call the millions of people have bought iPad "gullible" just because you are so unimaginative and short-sighted, you cannot see the use for it.

Once again, dimwitted Internet amateur journalism uses the word "cannibalism" completely incorrectly just because the writer has heard it used incorrectly before. Think about it. Apple can't cannibalize netbook sales, only their own products since that's what the word means. Think for yourself, writer.

Already pointed out and refuted quite a few times in this thread. To repeat, it's true that Apple can't cannibalize other companies' notebook sales, but BestBuy's notebook sales can be cannibalized by BestBuy's iPad sales.

It's not some Internet amateur journalist, it's the Wall Street Journal, and it's also not the writer of the article who used the word, it's the CEO of Best Buy.

Be interesting to see what happens when the Android tablets come out. Will this mean the total demise of the netbook?

Well since Google doesn't support Android on tablets, I'm not sure you're going to see too many of them. True any company can take the source and fork Android for their own use, but that doesn't mean it'll be an "Android" tablet or even compatible with any other Android system.

Chrome OS is Google's tablet OS.

Troll feeding

Why are you people feeding the trolls?

After all the success and sales of the iPad, these morons still think it's a useless device that will ultimately fail. Nevermind that Apple is ramping up production to 3 million units a month. Nevermind that it is being adapted into many different enterprise IT solutions. Nevermind that it is selling like hot cakes at what was previously a hostile Apple retailer.

They're obviously haters of everything that is Apple and cannot fathom why anyone would use an Apple product. There is obsoletely no reasoning with them, so why bother?

This is hardly surprising. The biggest competitor that the iPad has are netbooks. It's unlikely that someone who wants a high-end laptop like a MacBook is going to buy an iPad instead, but when given the choice between a cheap PC netbook to browse the internet or an iPad the choice for many will be the iPad.

We might presume that they are really talking about netbooks, but the article actually says Notebooks.

The iPad might not be a direct competitor to high end notebooks; however, there could be consumers deciding to delaying replacing their current high end laptops and buying an iPad instead.

i bet its cannibalizing mainly the netbooks though, which is a good thing for all of us

Also the Macbook Air sales got eaten....

The vast majority of sheeple will be very happy with an iPad, but the loss of the unlimited data is a deal breaker for me.

I'll stick to the heavy guns for now:
I used my Mac netbook (aka the Air) to download a series of pdfs and images from the web, chop the images into pieces for reconfiguration on Photoshop CS5, and then compile a new pptx on Office 2011. Things like this are not easy to do on the iPad.

Strange, people really shouldn't be making a choice between a netbook and an iPad.

I agree...the 2 products have completely different use cases and customer expectations.

Coincidentally, BestBuy has been quoted recently stating the return rate of iPads is over 20%...which is extremely high. The main reason is user dissatisfaction...basically finding out that for $500, it's not very magical.

I used an iPad the other day for the first time...I still think it's an oversized iPhone minus a bunch of features as well as a Touch minus features. If I didn't currently own an iPhone (or Touch), I would consider buying an iPad...but $500 just is so expensive in my eyes and certainly nothing magical by 2010 standards. I am, however, eager to see the iPad refreshes...just like how I waited till the 4th gen of an iPod (so it worked the way I wanted it and affordability) to buy.

I view this with mixed opinions. As a former Best Buy employee I am not surprised at this statistic. I am with the others that the netbook sales are being diminished by iPad however the sad fact is alot of this "cannibalization" is being done by people too cheap to buy a Mac, that would rather be impractical by using an iPad for a Macbook's useage. People are cheap. They saw a $500 touch device capable of doing basic computing and bought it with no regard. I have had my iPad since launch. I use it daily for school notes, web browsing, email, games, movies etc. but at the end of the day I use my Macbook to write my research papers. These people are using iPad's impractically and their ignorance is sad really. Yay for Apple, Not so much for dumb users.

Nobody is twisting your arm to buy an iPad, nor do they care how much you don't like it. I own one. It works, its extremely portable, fast, easy to use, productive and gets excellent battery life with the light functionality of my Macbook. You are making assumptions about a device without really using it. Own one, integrate it into your life, and then make a judgement call of whether you think its "just a big iPod Touch".

Strange, people really shouldn't be making a choice between a netbook and an iPad.

And exactly who appointed you kind/dictator/despot to tell people how to make choices?

Grandma uses her old dying PC for email and web browsing. Why should she get a netbook when she can use an iPad on her couch? (And there are lots of consumers her age.)

Agree, but 'as much as 50%' is just too much for me to believe it. Sorry BB, it's BS.

I'm really struggling with your continued insistence that the CEO of Best Buy is lying to the Wall Street Journal. You have offered no rational explanation as to why he would lie.

Furthermore, he actually has access to the sales data. You don't. I know which one of the two of you I find more credible....

Om nom nom.

Sure they should. It is silly for a typical consumer to have both.

Edit: Or maybe you're saying there's no relevance between the two platforms? There is. Both seek to provide similar solutions to the same problem: mobile computing. As such, there will be a lot of decision making between the two platforms for consumers, and one can have a direct effect on the other's sales. Even among tech professionals people would like to settle on a tablet-like device or a netbook. Few actually want both.

To the above posts... I think that iPad is appealing to the netbook market buyers. As an iMac, MBP, and iPad owner - I see less use of my MBP now. That will change at least for me as I rethink the iMac.

Right now my thoughts for anyone thinking of a Mac purchase; and torn between a desktop and a notebook - depending on usage do a MBP with an LCD screen and an iPad. Best of all worlds....
