Ah, the power the Best Buy trappings afford the Best Buy employees. Most of the people working at Best Buy will not be working there in two years, as the case is with most retail box stores, as there is little incentive to work for just-above minimum wage. You'd never believe it, though, when walking into a store like Best Buy who's got an "exclusive" right to sell the iPhone or the iPad. Such power! It drives the employees to arrogance. They'll look haughtily on you - as if being close to the pile of iPhones gives them a step-up on the rest of the mundane, the muggles, the ones without the mark of the beast, or so it would seem.

I laugh when I see this kind of arrogance, and I let the employee know exactly what it is. I say something like, "are you going to be working here five years from now?" while smirking insultingly. The response generally is a bit of surprise on their part, and then they slink away realizing that the source of their potency has been discovered, and found lacking.

I don't own an iPhone, care about iPhones, or even have a cell subscription - my present phone is a flip LG from Net10 (w/ bluetooth, camera, games, etc.) that cost me $22 for 600 minutes and 120 days. That's $5.50 per month, and we don't even have the opportunity to use all the minutes! I badger my wife, begging her to use them, lest they have to be carried over and I have to choose between salvaging the minutes left, or switching to another similar deal. "Call someone, call your sister in Boise!" On the last day, there's always hundreds left and I feel like I'm wasting them. The result is that I have about 25 spent cell-phones (tracfone mostly) in a box, with thousands of unused minutes.

So, I'll say thanks, guys, for subsidizing my cellular frugality. If it wasn't for the lot of you blowing your wads on iPhones to be able to talk and drive, I'd not be able to get cellular for $5.50/month! (Incidentally, I bought 10 of these phones with at $22 for 600 minutes/120 days, so I'm set up for the next couple of years at a cost lower than your entry!)

$220 = 1200 days, 6000 minutes, 10 phones, 10 phone numbers (a little unfortunate, but I get around that with Google Voice). I would have bought more, but was afraid of Net10's ability to stay in business long enough!

yeahhh... best buy seemed unorganized... i was second to turn in my pre order there... turned in one for black one for white both 16gb... so just in case i went to apple thru their new apple store app and reserved a black 16gb as there was no choice for a white one. then i read about the whole white iphone fiasco.... That pissed me off, i called best buy and they had heard about the situation with white iphone and stopped taking pre orders for them but said that i was the first to turn in an order for the white one so if they got any even if just one, i would get it. i asked how they knew i was the first as the best buy mobile dpt employee was just putting the pre order papers atop eachother some off to the side just thrown on the table, and he assured me that they go through the pre orders based off the time in which the transaction took place. so that kind of re assured me that maybe it would all be okay. so bottom line, trusted my gut... very glad i did and reserved a "back up" phone at apple for launch day which i will now be gettin (plan on gettin to apple around 3 am) then head to best buy cross my fingers for the white one to be there (my brother wanted it) if not dammit, but my brother said he would settle for the black. keep my pre order for white as they will notify me as soon as one entered their store and if it gets there within 30 days, return my brothers black one pay the minimal 15% restocking fee and he can have the white one. hope everyone gets their phones! good luck all

Man, I wish people would stop using the term "pre-order" as it relates to picking up the phone in the Apple store. There is no "pre-order", only a "reservation", that you can get at an Apple store. For a full explanation of your purchasing options see this post on Apple's discussion board.

AGREED... GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE CATCHING THIS AND BEING ANNOYED BY IT. HAHA

If history has taught me anything, buying from Apple (online or in line at the store) is usually the best chance at getting a phone on the actual release day.

I feel sorry for people who thought they could buy from any store that sold the phone, including AT&T, and get a hassle free experience on day 1. Not to say it doesn't happen but history and the odds are stacked against you.

If you're going to call someone else out for being egotistical or whatever you probably shouldn't act that way yourself. Only having 150 minutes a month definitely wouldn't work for me. In fact, I don't think I know anyone who it would work for. How much is it after you blow through that first 150? Like 10 cents a minute? I go through about 600 minutes a month easily (that's only 20 minutes per day), and usually a heck of a lot more, so I'd be spending waaaaaay more than I do now. Plus I would have some bunk LG flip phone to deal with every day. The iPhone does so much that I literally do not take my laptop on vacations with me. There's nothing I can do on my laptop that I can't on my iPhone. I'm glad that little deal works for you but I'd rather keep what I have now.

not surprised

I knew from the moment I was getting the phone that I would only get it from Apple. No one has their level of service, not only in attaining phone but in how easily it can be exchanged/fixed etc if there is a problem. You wouldn't catch me dead trying to get an iphone from AT&T

+1. It's a crap shoot at any store other than Apple.

I barely use 50 minutes a month talktime on my iPhone. Actually sometimes I use less than 10 minutes. But that is not what I bought my iPhone for.
It seems you don't really need your cellphone talktime either if at the end of the month you are TRYING to use up the minutes....

However I can and do use my iPhone for internet, calendar, email, GPS, geocaching, ebaying, pricechecking in a store, tide times, wind strengths, beer listings, happy hour times, and soon for video chatting.
Oh and not to mention watch all the world cup games live, check in on my dogs at home on the live webcam... But I bet your $5.50 / month probably allows your LG flip phone to do all that too right ?

The phone part of the iPhone for me is probably one of the least used functions on there. And it seems you even share yours with your wife...

I think you are in the wrong forum to be up on your soapbox saying you can get cell service for $5.50 a month. Welcome to the 21st century.

Do you think your store is unique in that it will be able to fill all of its pre-orders or is it simply too speculative?

I have know idea if other locations listened to the memo. My store is in the top 20 in revenue so I believe that probably helps my situation a little. I do not know and can't give out numbers from other stores. It just depends how much apple decided they needed. I guess apple either needs more for their own stores or didn't anticipate the demand correctly.

Seems Best Buy is expecting "minimal inventory" of iPhone 4s on launch and isn't even sure they'll be able to fulfill orders to all those who pre-ordered. Those who did pre-order at Best Buy should expect a phone call to set up an appointment during the day to purchase your iPhone 4. Best Buy won't know for sure if they will be able to fulfill existing pre-orders until they receive inventory numbers this week.

Hey, look! A valid reason to camp out in front of a retailer for a week for a product you've already pre-ordered. :p

I feel sorry for everyone who ordered from Best Buy, but I gotta say, sounds like classic them. Over-promise, under-deliver.

Ok wow really? No offense but there is a lot of hating on Best Buy from people who didn't even pre-order there and it's not like it's their fault.

I'm glad I did NOT order my iPhone from Best Buy. Looks like many of those people will NOT be getting their iPhones on launch day.

In case you haven't been reading the news, Apple and AT&T have been canceling some peoples pre-orders, so even if you pre-ordered from them, some aren't even getting theirs on launch day either. It's not like you could get through on Apple's site anyways, Best Buy was an easy option.

It's not like Apple guaranteed a certain number of iPhones for Best Buy. Apple is basically the one that controls the inventory for the Best Buys.

We're mostly hating on Best Buy because they're a crappy retailer in general, and this iPhone issue is only further proof.

And yes, it actually is their fault. They should have, as a retailer, confirmed how many units of merchandise they were going to receive before they started taking pre-orders. Or, not taken pre-orders at all if they didn't think they were going to be getting many units to start with. They were afraid of losing sales to AT&T and Apple who had started taking pre-orders themselves, and recklessly started promising customers merchandise they they had no firm hold on yet.

This is why when the Black Friday fliers come out, if you look closely Best Buy will list a "minimum number" of each product they will have on hand at a store. So it's in print how many they are promising to have available and if you come late and their gone, you can't say you weren't made aware by them how few there would be.

If "Apple is basically the one that controls the inventory for the Best Buys" Best Buy should stop taking money on inventory that basically isn't theirs.

I'm guessing 75% of you didn't read the actual document.

The "minimal inventory" is referring to walk-in inventory after pre-sales are fulfilled.

That's why you should trust apple and no one else when it comes to ordering APPLE products. Buy it straight from the source.
