I called my local best buy and the said they would be selling them at 9AM. Which I don't necessarily believe. So much confusion....

My local BB also said if they have them when they open, they will sell as soon as that... as soon as they get them. I don't believe it. Most likely 5pm as others have said. lulz at Apple needing BB :D

With last year's launch the iPad was initially only available at select Best Buy's with the internal Apple Shop (locations listed at this link http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Brands/Apple/pcmcat128500050005.c?id=pcmcat128500050005).

Has anyone been able to confirm if that is the case this year as well, or is it all Best Buys?

I called my local BB in North Haven, CT, and they said they don't expect to have any for a couple of weeks. Then I called Bestbuy.com and they also said they don't expect to have any online availability for a couple of weeks either.

What gives?

Was I speaking to clueless people? Were they deliberately deceptive for some reason? Will they really not have any?

Called my best buy I was told they would sell iPads when they open the store..

I went to bestbuy in manhattan on 117th street yesterday and ask the manager when will they be selling them and he said he expects trucks in the late afternoon ( friday) and he will put them out when they are offloaded !

Maybe all the fanbois should call BB and educate them on apple policies and politics.. Let them know they don't stand a chance in hell if they sell at 4:59PM..

Hold on.. What if a BB on the east coast sells before 5pm on the west coast?.. Thats totally not fair. Those people in bean town don't deserve their iPad2 before my broseph in LA! Not cool!

Seriously though.. Is this device literally going to change your way of life that you MUST be the first one in your town to have it? I'm cool with apple products and like quite a few but they aren't a god or anything. iPad2 won't get you laid man. Thats what guitar used to be for.

Best buy employees do not necessarily follow apple's instructions. They are not owned by apple and they are not always educated the way the apple employees do.

Yeah but if the shipment has a big "do not open until 5pm" the you better bet they won't be opened until then.

Maybe this store doesn't have an apple center inside?

I asked over the weekend and they didn't know anything. They offered helpful guesses, but they didn't know.

I think they're just making assumptions. I would bet they'll be instructed to hold them until 5 PM or perhaps they won't even get stock until Friday some time.

I'd trust the official FAQ over some random store dude.

With that said, I'm really curious if they're doing tickets, regardless of time.

I'm starting to think that it might be the same case as last year. I probably going to wait till tomorrow to call my local BB to confirm. If that's the case then I'll either need to take a 25min trip to a Best Buy with an Apple Solutions Center or I may go across the street to Target. I'm leaning towards going to Best Buy though for the rewardzone points and I think they will have a better selection of accessories if there are any available at launch.

It was a random store dude, in addition to two reps on the phone from Bestbuy.com The phone people seemed totally unaware of what the website said.

(I'd be happy to buy one at an Apple store if the nearest wasn't an hour away, and if I didn't have a couple of hundred in BB gift cards to spend. Until now, I've found it harder to find anything at BB cheaper than at that online place named after a river in Brazil.)

I'll throw my info into the hat. I called CS and asked and was told that no stores are to be selling the iPad 2 before 5 PM. An internal memo is floating around and has yet to hit all Best Buy stores that will be carrying it on Friday.

I also called Target and was told the same thing, they have to follow Apple instructions.

I LOVE Brazillian river shopping! The Capybaras are delightful:D

Please add the following:

"Call an actual Best Buy store for real facts."

Just called the Best Try store in Hagerstown MD, Manager said they will receive iPad shipments in Friday morning and place them on sale in the "evening"...methinks that means 5:00pm like apple said.

Anyhoo...BB site only lists black models. Any word on white iPad's and if other retailers will be allowed to get them early?

Honestly, I'm wondering if Best Buy will get the smart covers. I've never seen bumpers for the iPhone 4 at Best Buy.

No reason to think they wouldn't since they sell the Apple case for the iPad1. The question will be whether or not they have them at launch and the quantity/color selection.

Walmart and Target and Best Buy should all the Smart Covers, except Red, as that is a Product RED, Apple Store Exclusive.

NYC - 44th and 5th Ave said they will sell as soon as they open. I somehow don't believe them.

I also waited 40 minutes for Pokemon Black which never came. I really hate Best Buy.

The best buy on broadway and Houston also said they'll be selling them when they open Friday morning.

I just called a best buy in Garland, Texas. She said she had just heard that they couldn't sell it till 5pm. Didn't get any clarification on whether she heard that from a manager or someone who read it online.

Just called mine too
[Bestbuy Mcallen,Tx]
"Not Selling until the Afternoon, then he checked with the manager.
He said after 5pm. No ticket system.

Also.
I asked if they'll have white.
They said they would have both colors,
but they can't give out info on how much stock
they'll get

This is a great thread.

I think we conclude a few things:

1. 'Majority' of Best Buys will sell @ 5p - there may be a few locations/Reps with misinformation, but they've been part of Apple releases in the past (so they know the drill)

2. You have a much higher probability of securing an iPad 2 prior to 5p at one of the resellers: Walmart/Target > Best Buy > Apple

Personally, I really wish Apple would have allowed pre-orders to be delivered on Friday. I would have much rather waited anxiously for the FedEx driver at home than stand in line. Since I have $250 worth of Apple Gift Cards burning a hole in pocket - I don't have a choice. Well of course, I could wait for it to ship - but I know that isn't going to happen.

Swung by my local Best Buy during lunch and asked a couple guys about the iPad 2 launch. As I stated earlier, my local store is not a Apple Solutions Center per Best Buy.com, but they stated they will be carrying the iPad 2 on the 11th and did state that it would not be available until 5PM. As other have stated, they could not comment on stock because they weren't advised how many they were being sent. They also had no specifics on accessories/cases, but were pretty confident that they would be available.

How quickly everyone forgets.
Will Best Buy sell then on launch day early? Will there be vouchers?
All the same questions that were asked when Apple released the original iPad 3G. It too was a 5pm release.
People claimed their Best Buys would be selling them early and Best Buy even said there would be no vouchers.
Then what happened on the launch day?
The Best Buy's didn't start selling them until 5pm - and some stores even handed out vouchers in the morning, despite earlier saying they wouldn't.

I didn't buy from Best Buy last time around because I pre-ordered online and last time it was limited to just Best Buys with an Apple Solution Center. I doubt early sales will happen at Best Buy, but when it comes to a reseller and the human element, anything can happen. I imagine that if the iPad is sold early anywhere it will be either Target or Walmart, but that's only if they arrive the night before or early morning.

best buy

I called best buy in my area, they said they'd sell them on the 11th...
thing is, my brain is in catch 22 mode, I'm thinking what they meant is "yeah, we'll sell it on the 11th, we won't say what time though." even though i asked if they would sell at 5pm as stated by apple and the guy said "nope, we will sell it on the 11th." still digressing from my original question lol. smart guy.

anyways, i just plan on hitting up best buy at 9 when they open friday morning. best bet is just to give them a call in the morning and ask if they're selling ipad2's at that very moment. I'm lucky enough that there is an abundance of tech outlets by my house (i live in the "silicon valley") so if that one store doesn't have it, i have 6 other stores to visit in my area.
