a nice glowing apple logo would look sweet too :)

This glowing Apple logo could be useful, especially if they use and RGB multicolor led to drive it. Just think of the uses, flashing red for unread sms message or other indications for missed calls, voicemail or badge notification. It would be nice if there were api access to change the flash rate and color.

You're missing the point. On the Macbook there is not a circuit board between the screen and the back, therefore the display lighting illuminates it.

The iPhone does have components between the screen and the back, therefore the screen lighting wouldn't show.

Can we move past this now? A lit Apple logo would be obscured by your hand during 90% of use in any case. Not sure what difference it would make. A bit obnoxious on a phone also...

Light pipes. Google them. If they wanted to make it glow off of the backlight, it wouldn't be too difficult regardless of PCBs/components in the way. Would they do it? Not sure how much it costs because I've never designed something with light pipes in it, but it's definitely doable.

Sounds interesting, but who leaves their iPhone sitting on their desk bottom up?

No, because frankly, you still shy from the point. Gifts, and quotas, while they are not the conventional definition of "commision, are still incentives for employees, and therefore encourage underhanded techniques to scam the buyer into getting something they don't need.

Its like used game reserves and magazine/ edge card subscriptions from Gamestop. If you dont get them, the employees get yelled at and get fired for poor reserves/ subs. It led to begging customers and false claims as to what the subs do for the customer. I saw it there when I worked there.

Me? That way if I am showing a group of people something at my desk and my phone starts ringing, or vibrates from SMS the group of people cant see who's calling, or even read the SMS quick preview.

Well I guess I'm glad I haven't ever had a job like that. No matter what the case, I cannot lie to people like that. I just wouldn't do it. Saying the strings on guitar hero can break? There are no strings... I wouldn't lie and vouch for a product either, I am not that kind of person. How would I feel if I was trying to buy something and the sales person was lying to me saying a crappy product was great? That is why I would flat out refuse that myself, and its a shame other employees don't do the same.

Yes, it is a shame, but in this economy, no one can afford to lose their job. I was 16 at the time, 3 years ago, and everyone was on edge because we were the number 1 store in the district and our numbers were slowly falling. All our customers were regualrs who already had a sub. So the employees got desperate when the new customers came in. It was dirty, and low, and im glad I never resorted to underhanded tactics. I'm so grateful to have a job now where bull****ing people isnt necessary or approved of.

I see your point though. I dont much like Best Buy, I take their sales advice with a grain of salt, and I make the decision for my self. They have a descent return policy though, which I like.

What do you expect to happen when they pay minimum wages? To get anything decent they have to get sales commissions, so they do anything they can to sell and upsell.

It's really bad for the consumer. Still the internet is cheaper still, and you can read real user reviews on most online stores.

The consumer doesn't have to buy anything. If someone is going to a store and making uninformed decisions that's really his fault, salesmen on commission have NEVER been honest.

hey guys...best buy associates do not get paid commission....and in most cases pay well above minimum wage.

you are going to find people that think they know everything about every product at any store, not just best buy. so stop putting down a cool electronics store like best buy just because YOU think you know so much about a product :D

p.s. can't wait for the new iphone! woot!

For what it's worth, MacRumors has heard that Apple will indeed be using the ARM Cortex for the next iPhone. This is the same class of processor used in the upcoming Palm Pre.

Following the link... there are two types of Cortex A chips, the single-core A8 and the dual-core A9. I have a feeling that Apple will go with the A8 for power consumption reasons (<300 mW!), but it certainly seems like dual-core iPhone is not that far off...

There's another problem with the shared light source theory:
The screen goes off when you put it to you ear. Then the Apple logo would go off too. That would be kinda dumb since one of the only times the logo would actually be visible to others is when you have it to you ear (provided your hand isn't covering it). Pretty much al other times the logo would be facing the floor.

considering an engineering sample of the cortex a9 core hasnt even been released yet...its very very unlikely that they are going to be doing anything multicore yet.

Its likely that this next iphone will have the arm cortex a8...clocked at 600mhz..which is what the pre has (although the iphone is much more optimized with a slicker OS, so we should see alot more from the iphone)

the cortex a9 will be in use by the end of this year..apple will likely that technology on their own chip designed in house..by PA semi.

The rumors of the new iPhone are exciting and all, but I'm more curious about the pricing--especially for those who bought the 3G and still have one year left on their contract.
Doesn't affect me much, since I want to wait a while before I buy a new iPhone. However, the pricing will determine how much whining I'm going to be hearing on the boards.

This question about pricing always baffles me. What do you think is going to happen when you are only 1 year into a 2 year contract on a subsidized phone?

People you need to pay for the phone before you upgrade. It is simple.

My guess is that there will be tiered pricing. Full subsidy for those finishing two year contract or with Gen 1 phones: $199 & 299 and half subsidy for one year owners something like $299 and $399 (maybe a little higher) and a new two year contract.

Well of course for the people with the first iphone. No tier pricing for the 1 year contract people though. I would guess more in the ballpark $399 and $499 for 3G owners 1 year into contract. That would fit more into half the price of an unsubsidized phone. Remember when AT&T started selling iphones at full price. This was no mistake. It was to let the general public know what it was going to charge for the iphone.

The lighting for the display is on the edges anyway, so the electronics in the middle are not relevant.

In any case they'd probably just use fiber optics to route the light where they want. There's no reason not to just use the existing LCD backlight.
