Why on earth would anyone buy a (non-retina) Macbook Pro???
Im in university doing computer science and I brought one with the retina display as it was suitable for me and also I had the money.
I know people who brought the non-retina ones as its cheaper and they can update them themselves cheaper than the retina macbook (but I found it too bulk as I have got a sore back and the retina just works very fast).

You get double the graphics performance on the MacBook Air compared to the 13" 2012 MacBook Pro though. And even better with the 13" rMBP. I don't understand your initial comment.

This doesn't make any logical sense. Neither the Intel HD 6000 or the Intel Iris Pro 5200 are very capable for gaming. The MacBook Pro is going to be seriously bogged down with it's 'retina' display... just like the 5k iMac sucks for gaming. THATS WHY you wouldn't want to get retina display if you wanted a laptop that can also perform well.

Inst this pretty much a carbon copy of last year's Black Friday deals at BB?

Am I missing something? I know Macs aren't great for gaming. It'd be stupid to buy one for that purpose. But this is what you said:

My point is that you get better graphics performance on both the MBA and the rMBP, so buying a non-Retina MBP for that purpose is silly. Plus the MacBook Air alone has double the graphics performance of the non-retina MacBook Pro, and it doesn't have a Retina Display. So no pixel driving issue.

Again, is there something I'm missing?

What other choice is there for people who want to burn CDs on the go? o_O

#1 - The 1990s called. They want their CDs back.
#2 - Just get an external CD/DVD reader/burner. You can buy the one from Apple for $80, or a few years ago I was able to find them for $20 from other companies... I only imagine the price has dropped further since.

You're not going to be getting double performance on a retina display unless you lower the resolution but then make it look VERY weird. So no, retina displays are a no-go for gaming. I've got a 2012 15" MacBook Pro with a GTX 650m and it performs very well for a gaming laptop thanks to the native resolution being 1680x1050. If I had double the screen resolution, I wouldn't even bother, the frame rates would be awful. That's one of the main reason why I didn't get a rMBP.

So the funny thing about target is they had a ton of these ipads on black friday. Last year I remember it was a giant cage full, we went like 2 hours after they opened and they still had some.

What do you wanna bet that even at $250 the counter will still be full of Watches?

That sounds like the perfect price for the Watch, but the reality is most buyers are likely going to be men, and they are most likely going to want the 42mm, which will be $300, and even though that's $100 off, still seems like a lot. Then again, maybe scalpers will scoop them up and then sell them on eBay for a $50-75 profit when the prices go back up. Still seems like a pretty big gamble. Probably gonna be a lot of sales leading up to Christmas, and I'm still dubious as to whether it's going to be a hot ticket item for the holidays.

Maybe they're counting on a lot of wives and girlfriends going to pick up one as a gift and trying on the 38mm themselves, and making an impulse buy at only $250, especially if they have the gold Sport as pictured in the ad.

The MacBook Air does not have a retina display.
The MacBook Air has double the graphics performance of the cMBP.
So yes, you will be getting double performance on the MacBook Air.

Even with the bottleneck of the Retina Display on the 13" rMBP, the more capable graphics hardware will still mean it's more powerful for gaming than the cMBP.

replaceable parts
built in cd/dvd drive
Cons:
  • Non-Retina Display
  • Slow HDD Standard, and SATA 3 Instead of PCIe
  • Outdated CPU & GPU
  • Thicker, Heavier
  • Worse Battery Life
Which still makes me wonder why anyone would buy one.

An external superdrive. Not that most people would want to burn CDs on the go in 2015... o_O

I bought one last year because of hard drive space. I got a 500GB MacBookPro for $1000. The similar Flash drive space for a Retina model has a price of $1800.

That's huge. Honestly is Apple doesn't provide a more reasonable pricesd laptop with good HDD space, I will be switching back to Windows when I buy a new computer in a year or two.
Your Macbook Pro is also painfully slow and louder due to the HDD. No thanks.

So you want Apple to go backwards and put a HDD in the rMBP? Better start looking for Windows laptops, because there is zero chance Apple is making a new laptop with HDDs.

I've given up on Black Friday. Great day to not go anywhere. As BF hype increased, discounts shrank such that "deals" aren't appreciably better than other common sales, given the extreme hassle involved. If you know EXACTLY what you want, and have a battle plan for getting it before lines run long and supplies run out, great - but if you're not at the head of the line, fugheddaboudit.

My breaking point was when we went into a kids' clothing store. I took one look at the line and told my wife to go find what she wanted while I stood in line, figuring she'd be done about the time I'd reach the register. By the time I got to where the end of the line was, it had already stretched to the other end of the store; when this happened twice more, I was done with BF for good. Since then the only BF thing I've done was pick up a still-available copy of _Fight_Club_ BluRay for $4 the next morning when all the lines had gone.

Pretty ugly to go from a day of "thanks giving" to jostling strangers over selfishly buying stuff that night. Blargh.

In 2012, I could certainly see the appeal of the cMBP. There was a significant price premium for the 13" rMBP at the time, the CPU/GPU were the same, and an SSD would perform similarly between both while the cMBP was upgradeable.

3 years later, the age has caught up with it. A 13" rMBP is not much more expensive, especially with buying from resellers, the GPU/CPU are noticeable faster, and the new PCIe SSDs will smoke anything you could put in the cMBP. You also get the benefits of the form factor, weight and retina display. I love upgradability, but it's simply not enough of an advantage now, IMO.

So $200 gift card to trade in and upgrade to the latest iPhone and maybe $100 off the sport model Apple Watch (though probably not that much). Can you use the gift card immediately because that would make it new phone and then a watch for $100 effectively...

We need to stop supporting these companies that start these sales on Thanksgiving day itself. It's disgusting. My family doesn't get together as often any more since many of them moved halfway across the country. But then they feel like they need to go "get the deals before the other guy does" and we don't get to spend as much time together. It really irritates me, especially since I usually get the same or better deals by searching around on Cyber Monday. I tell them this, but they still shop. Mindless drones…sigh. If I had it my way, there wouldn't be sales on Friday either. God forbid families spend more than a day with each other out of the year.

Somehow I look at your avatar saying and then read your post, something doesn't add up.

Good luck with that...

I tried to use my Discover like that at the Best Buy in State College, PA and Altoona, PA... rejected both times.. card has a limit well above the price of the MBP I was trying to buy and $0 balance, so it's not my credit card that caused it to be rejected.

interesting. I have used mine multiple times over the past few weeks without issue (apple watch, magic trackpad 2 and keyboard).
