Apple made a bad decision here. News, and good news sources, are widely available for free. Print publications, even delivered digitally, are dying and have been for some time.

Most of that 'free' content you're getting comes at a cost. Sometimes it's ads, sometimes it's tracking and selling your data, etc. It feels free, but it isn't. (And if like me, you use an adblocker, then you're effectively stealing the content).

So - I don't think Apple has made a bad decision. They're just trying to create a revenue model for print so that these media outlets can stay alive. If it all goes to ad supported, then we'll get news that just tries to sell to us, and that affects how editors and journalists write their content. (Ever notice how articles are stuffed with links and reviews to affiliate links etc.?)

My main issue with Apple News Plus is that it sucks. It's hard to navigate and mixes paid content with other stuff so it's frustrating. I'll give it another shot with this (because I want to pay for quality news). I use and pay for Readly, and subscribe to 3 print/online newspapers, so I want this to work.

I’ll give it another try. I didn’t find any value in it for me the first time, but 3 months is a longer window to try it out. I’ve got a reminder set to cancel in October.

OK, I've got the code, now where do I enter it? The Apple news apps on IOS and Mac don't have any fields for codes in their subscription process that I can find…

does this integrate with safari? can safari automatically access paywalled news sites that are part of apple news+? if not, then it's not really useful for me.

Apple's biggest mistake was thinking "Magazines = News". There was plenty of good non-news content on Next Issue that made it great value at $10/month, but all anyone can see is $10/month for a limited amount of outdated news.

The product is horribly marketed, nobody knows what it is or why they'd pay for it. And the interface is so twisted to this idiotic "News" model, that it's hard to even access the actual magazine content in a decent way. Apple doesn't even know what the magazine product is, how can their customers possibly be expected to?

It's way too expensive for what it offers, no thanks. I might pay a couple of bucks a month, but really why bother when other News apps are just as good? I'm also boycotting it due to Apple's incessant need to put News+ stories in my feed which I always mistakenly click on, like really Apple you need to try to trick me into subscribing?

You're not "stealing" the content by using an adblocker, if that was the case then there would be a lot of lawsuits out there. I don't disagree that the business model is to track and sell your data though. Also agree that News+ sucks, it's way overpriced for what it offers.

I think these all get added in the iTunes on a connected IOS device, mine just spawned the apple news subscription page of the apple news app. I had to copy and past the code (from the Best Buy email) but then it attached to my iTunes subscription account .. even though technically the iTunes and app Store and Best Buy email addresses are different. It now shows up in my subscriptions as expires 10/15/20

Did the same. Tried the service then cancelled before billing started. I was hoping it would give me access to WSJ and NYT articles so I could stop paying for them individually. Was sadly disappointed. Apple News scraped a couple of headline stories but not the full access I was hoping for. Apple needs to get out of the news business as they can’t compete with dedicated/free services.

FYI this works even if you already have an active subscription.

Why would anyone be against a long free trial that you easily can cancel before you're charged anything?
I think folks have bad experiences cancelling other services and assume it's a big hassle. With subscriptions through Apple, you just click a button.

I'm going to try out this trial. I normally don't read enough news to warrant paying for it, but we're going into election season and I would rather read from publications than Twitter memelords.

I tried Apple News+ but just didn’t see the value in it so cancelled before the trial was over.
More annoying though is the way the news app constantly tries to get you to subscribe to news+. It’s very spammy and I expect better from Apple
I used to *love* apple news, but since they've destroyed the app with constant hidden paywalls I've basically stopped using it. Half the time you see an interesting headline in the widget or scrolling through the app - with no indication that it's premium content, you click on the article and it's begging for another $10/month.

I have enough subscriptions, and especially enough subscriptions going to apple - between iCloud storage, apple music, and applecare, they're getting enough of my money every month. I can get articles pushed to me for *free* by having a twitter account subscribed to news outlets I trust, and a reddit account involved in just a few subreddits. That's enough for me!
