And as a Minnesota guy, with a history of working with Best Buy, this makes me sad. They really need to differentiate themselves from Amazon and other competitors, Sadly this is not the way to do it.

Leadership of that (once great) company is absolutely lost. Amazing how often I drive passed their world headquarters (part of my commute) shaking my head at what they are doing in their market.

I worked next door to them in Richfield for a year I spent in MN ... really sad to see what they've become. They built that campus to be a huge build they could grow into. I think when they moved in they occupied one full building of the two, and I don't think they ever ended up moving into the second. And it's purpose-built as a corporate campus so it's not like they could lease out the other half. I kinda feel like that's what's going to happen with Apple Park if Apple doesn't get their stuff together and grow. But yeah, that Minneapolis campus is sad, and I would talk to many of the employees at lunch and they were just miserable. And this was 10 years ago when the company was just off their huge growth spurt. I can't even imagine how bad the morale is now that they've closed hundreds of stores, had massive layoffs, and the outlook for the company is not good.

I only shop at Best Buy when I absolutely have to. As far as I'm concerned they are the next Radio Shack or Circuit City.

According to their price match policy they would have too adjust. Looking for people that don't know better. BB wants to try and charge more because they can't make money off carrier activations.

BB uses a supply management company and not directly with Apple for inventory so they don't like returns.

I am still trying to figure out what they offer over going to Apple or your carrier or online?

Well, supply-and-demand. They figure demand will exceed supply, so may as well bump the price up so they're "the only ones still selling iPhone X". Not a bad choice, ensuring product is available.

Except now they'll have a reputation for extremely high prices; I'll go elsewhere so I don't have to concern myself with that twist.

I like Best Buy overall and actually had great experience with them over the past couple of years. In fact, they have become my go to store for many things including some Apple products because they are close by and always have things in stock.

Here in Canada, it's the opposite. Nothing is ever in stock. Even though it's listed online, it'll say out of stock for months on end.

The only good thing about any bricks and mortar store is being able to see products in person before buying. But with so many YouTube unboxing videos, and Amazon's great return policy, I wonder how much longer these big box store will be around.

That’s some capitalist logic for you.

Which is just fine with me. I have no problem raising a middle finger to Best Buy and spending my money elsewhere. Businesses that make customer-unfriendly decisions like this usually pay the price for it in the long run.

Most of their customer service is outsourced outside of US. I had to file a BBB complaint to get someone in US to respond.

I found a photo of Best Buy's VP of marketing at his linkedin account.

This must be some of the flexibility they are talking about!

The only thing I absolutely hated about Best Buy before is the way they treat customers on their way out of the store. They assume you are stealing from them. One day I kind of said that to the guy. He said it was to make sure the product that I paid for is the right one because of so many different models and they wanted to make sure I was good to go... I must have looked at him like he was crazy and I said, wow... that's how they want you to explain that, huh?

They got better with it and the service on the floor got a lot better as well. Now I almost exclusively order online and pick up in store because they don't bother you on the way out. The pick up desk is near the exist. They can see you picking up items, I think. Or maybe they softened up the policy a bit. But that was always the most annoying thing...

I am with you. I shop with them on a weekly basis out of convenience and never have any issues with them. I mostly buy video games from them because of the 20% discount you get if in their Gamer's Club.

I agree that it's ridiculous to charge $100 more for a phone but you have choices and you can choose not to buy it. They have done it lately with almost all new popular phones. People will stay pay the extra fee especially for a hard to get phone like the X.

Best Buy thinks they can get away with this? Not too long ago they were in financial trouble, then they started price matching and turning it around. Stupid move BB.
They have been doing this for YEARS, so yes they can get away with it

Often times Apple products cost more on Amazon and nobody is angry. I don't understand why somebody would buy from BB for $100 more unless people are not comfortable with ordering over internet and Apple store is far far away.

They currently only use 1 of the 3 buildings at their HQ. They rent the other two out. I know US Bank uses a good part of one of them and there are other companies leasing space in the Best Buy HQ too.

I can't tell you the number of times I've been contacted by Best Buy about jobs with their company. While they sound like great opportunities (generally director and VP positions), there's not a chance in the world I'd work for a company that unstable. It's only a matter of time before they lay off another 300+ people suddenly.

Hmm. I disagree. Admittedly, I don't live in Minnesota, but I buy most of my electronics and appliances at Best Buy. Over the past few years, Best Buy has really stepped up to compete with Amazon and other online retailers. In fact, in many cases, Amazon simply matches the prices that Best Buy sets on electronics, TVs, movies, etc. The new layout of the stores -- at least the ones around me -- is excellent: a tech lover's paradise.

I've never quite understood why some people refer to Best Buy as "the showroom for Amazon." If the item you want happens to be cheaper on Amazon, but you happen to be in your local Best Buy, why not simply request a price match? It's super easy and I've never had an issue getting a price match. For me, it's also easier to return an item to Best Buy rather than deal with the hassle of shipping it back to Amazon.

Also, if you spend a certain amount of money per year at Best Buy, you'll qualify for their Elite status, which extends your return and price adjustment period up to 45 days. I can't tell you how much trouble and money this alone has saved me.

Here's a good article showing the strides they've made over the past 5 years:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/18/business/best-buy-amazon.html

Regarding their iPhone X pricing: I agree, the $100 increase is just bad business -- I'll be the first to admit that.
