Not that bad of a deal..
Just estimated my Late 2006 MBP 2.33 15" for $635.

Makes me feel better about adding a 2011 MBA to complement the 2010 MBA i already have.

My problem is - i wished Best Buy carried the i7 256s.. .

I can understand that. I more than likely would have gone with an i7 11" had I had that option through best buy. I guess the only thing I can say is that there isn't a huge performance increase from the 1.7 i5 to the 1.8 i7. Anandtech had it at ~8%.

Ok, just to report back.. I went to my local best buy and used their trade in program ~ $635 gift card > i applied to my new 2011 MBA..

All in all not a bad deal.

$1039.99 for the 11" i5 128 SSD 4gig model
- $635.00 for my trade
= $404.00 + tax (out of pocket)

+ I got the $100 iTunes gift card!

I'm a happy camper :D

BTW, i also got a unit with the faster SSD!!

So is this store by store or national? Do you have to have bought it at best buy? Sorry for the basic questions but I didn't see anything absolute yet.

I think I'm going to do this right after the new MBP's are released late this year/early next year. Right now, I have an early 2008 Macbook 2.4 160GB. I also have a brand new Sandy Bridge custom PC I built. Here's what I want to do: trade-in the Macbook and sell the PC on Craigslist. Then I can consolidate my equipment (power + portability). I have been wanting to do this for a while. This new plan reeks of awesomeness.

I'll try to answer as best as I can here.

From what I've been able to gather from the Best Buy website (http://www.bestbuy.com/tradein), the following things apply:

If you purchased the product from Best Buy, you are able to bring it in to any Best Buy store with the receipt for a trade-in credit.

If you did not purchase the product from Best Buy, there are select stores in your state that will take the product in for a trade-in credit. As I was told by a customer service representative, a customer service manager, and a store general manager: If the store is listed on the Best Buy website as a trade-in store--they can take trade-ins.

Note: While talking with the general manager, he did say that the availability for trade-in stores is subject mostly by local ordinances. He gave the example: in certain counties, they do not cash out of area checks. Some counties have that ordinance--likewise there are ordinances similar that are used to discourage retails scams, etc.

It's important to note that your mileage with this program may vary. I tried two different stores before I found a Best Buy store that would take it. Keep in mind these two stores were listed on the Best Buy website as stores that would take non-Best Buy/No Receipt trade-ins. My advice is if they say no, ask to speak with a manager.

Hopefully this helps!

I noticed that when you search for a "Best Buy Trade In store near you" on the Best Buy Trade In site and you find a store near you in the list, when you look at the "Store Services" section it will tell you which stores participate. It basically tells you if it is a store that accepts "Hardware Trade-In with receipt" or "Hardware Trade-In no receipt". Of course all California stores seem to require a receipt. I am still going to try and go in with my 2008 MacBook Unibody (quoted $600) and my poor beat up iPhone 3G (quoted $63).

What if you bought it from somewhere else but you still have the receipt? Or invoice via email. Any bonuses for having the original OS discs? Or upgrade discs?

Is their a bonus for a black MacBook VS a white one since the black ones always cost more?

I just wanted to thank people for the info in this thread... I didn't even realize best buy had a trade in program.

I went to best buy yesterday and they gave me $598 for my Late 2006 Macbook Pro. This was more than expected and the process was painless.

Super happy with my new 13" MBA!!!

I'm glad to be of help. I didn't know about it--and to be perfectly honest, I highly doubt I would have been able to swing the MBA any other way.

Has anybody tried to trade in a 2010 MBA? I'm in the market for a new 11" so hopefully I get a better quote in-store

Don't do it man.. Go to the site posted earlier in this thread to pull an estimate. You'll be better off giving your 2010 MBA to your wife / spouse / partner.. It's still an amazing machine (that's what i did).

If you have an older machine pull an estimate from the site and see if it works out. You will not get higher than the estimate from the trade in site.

HERE YA GO:

This is the most you should expect to get from Best Buy for a 2010 11" Ultimate..

For a newer model, Apple recycling is better..for a very old mac, Best Buy gives better money.

Though the website lists some Best Buy stores as "no receipt", they don't take it all. Good thing they suggested another store nearby and indeed they are ready to take without a receipt (meaning, bought at different location).

I am going to try trade-in my Core Duo MBP which can't even run Lion, but BB estimate the values to $430. If I can trade-in, its a great buy.

Bestbuy is quoting me $522.00 for my base 13" 2011 MBP. They wish.
Apple says $813.00, which is pretty good.

I went to a 'nonreceit' store tonight only to be told they are a receipt store. And they didn't have the new 11 on display. Annoying as there arent many trade in stores here.

I attempted to try and trade my MacBook in for gift card credit and was turned away. Everybody at the store played dumb and acted like they did not know what I was talking about so I had to show them the Best Buy Trade In site. They then made a couple phone calls and all the while they were doing that a Geek Squad member was looking over my laptop so I thought it was a go only for them to tell me that I need to do it online and mail it in. I will just attempt to use Craigslist instead.

UPDATE: What the heck! The idiot Geek Squad member who inspected my Mac renamed my "Macintosh HD" to "Geek" on the desktop.

www.bestbuy.com/tradein

I got the quote online, printed it and took it into the store.

I was able to get the "good" price. I got a quote for a "good" rating and a "fair" rating and printed them off. I only showed the good rating to them. My computer was in great shape, however, it did have a scratch on the cover.

It was an "Aluminum" macbook not the white plastic one. The $660 was more than they were going for on eBay.

I think buying from Best Buy is better because with the $100 gift card you can buy anything including an iTunes card if you want one.

Their trade-in program is quite interesting. You get quoted over $600 for a 2008 Macbook and for my 15" i7 MBP with 8GB RAM and high-res anti-glare screen from 2010 I get $774 for a gift card. I could easily sell this computer for over double that on ebay.

Not planning on selling it, but it seems they have a limit on the max price they will pay.

not bad since apparently a 2011 15" i7 only fetches $635 from BB trade in.... not sure how they do their prices but what a rip off.

The thing is very silly, I will admit. However it worked in my favor. 560 for my 2008 Macbook.

Definitely if you have a newer MBA/MBP you would be better off with Craigslist/eBay. However--the best I could have hoped on eBay for my white Macbook would have been ~400 bucks.

You win some, you lose some.

*Bumping this thread as I will be selling my 2007 MBP next week to BestBuy and will let everyone know how it went.

As of right now it is being quoted for a little over $500.....

Lets see what happens

Unfortunately, the online calculator grossly understates the value of the Air (probably because it has no optical drive and "only" 128GB of storage).

Trade-In Estimate
APPLE NOTEBOOK
CPU BRAND: Intel Core 2 Duo
CPU SPEED: 1.41 ghz to 1.7 ghz
MEMORY: 4GB or more
HARD DRIVE: 100.1 GB to 159.9 GB
CONDITION: GOOD

WIPE HARD DRIVE AND REMOVE PERSONAL DATA: I WILL REMOVE PERSONAL DATA MYSELF
Estimated Trade-in Value

I tried again and got a similar result to you. Wonder if they'll be updating their calculator anytime soon.

The sweet-spot is a pre-unibody MacBook with a C2D processor. In good condition, you can easily gain about $200-$300 on buying and old one and trading it in. The larger the HDD the better too. Last week I bought a MacBook on ebay for $320 and then traded it in for a $567 GC. Now, I just have to decide what to trade it in for or towards.

One question...if I buy, say, a MacBook Pro from Best Buy brand new and don't open it, will Apple let me return it to an Apple Store for store credit? Apple Stores of course offer some of the other configurable options that the Best Buy stores do not.

no apple is not going to take it back without a receipt because A. all of the receipts are stored in their system, and B. they e-mail it to you at the time of purchase, at which point you have like 14 days to return it, and C. Apple won't accept receipts/purchases from re-sellers.

I honestly wouldn't even be surprised if apple knows where each macbook is purchased, it's not hard to know which serial numbers are sent to best buy or wal-mart and have them flagged as such.
